The public areas of the hotel were very nice and the decor was very much in keeping with the history of the building. The breakfast which we paid extra for was excellent. The staff were pleasant and helpful .
The room itself was very disappointing ,although clean. The room was very small indeed . Not even room for a single chair. There was no space for even a small fridge. The small shower room was nicely done. I don’t remember being made aware that the room was in a building separate to the main building and up a steep and narrow staircase. The room was really very small indeed .
Beautiful historic building in the centre of York, with lots of character and interesting history. Rooms were lovely and spacious, very clean and well equipped. We particularly liked the flask of fresh milk for tea/coffee which was provided each day. Definitely enjoyed our stay here, and would come back again next time we are in York.
Its an old building and is therefore stairs-only, so if you have heavy luggage it could be a problem. There is no parking on-site, so take that into account when staying.

Excellent location and fabulous room. Super comfortable beds with an amazing deep tub. Breakfast was so good. The staff was wonderful.

The stairs were challenging in the old part of the building.
I made a special request for dairy free milk and the staff happily accommodated! Rooms were elegant and breakfast choices were abundant! Good job!
Only issues were early morning (pre-dawn) sounds of banging dumpsters right out side of my window. Also, as the bathroom was on the smaller side, I would have loved a surface or some table to use for toiletries.
The staff were very welcoming and helpful greeted at reception with a big smile.

Love the history and quirkiness. Fab location. The staff were all very friendly and mostly helpful. Great being able to drop bags early & find them in our room later. Drinks are served cold, although a little slow. We only had small plates in the evening but what we had was good & quick.
Not sure the room descriptions are accurate. I didn’t expect our Terrace room to be a bolt on across the courtyard, with no privacy (or no light). I reserved the room as hubby struggles with steps, not realising there would be steps to/from reception/breakfast.
Lack of ambient lighting in the room. A bit difficult if you need the loo in the night. Plus there are 2 steps up to the shower/loo space, strip/spotlights in them would help as the actual loo light automatically puts the extractor on, very disturbing.
The smiling apology (sorry/not sorry),from the receptionist for late delivery of fresh milk for morning coffee! Fresh milk, nice touch if it works but just get a fridge…
Oh, doors locked at 11pm, key provided, but an odd one, don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a hotel where the doors are locked at 11 🤷♀️
Black midges in the cellar bar, went to bed with bites on my ankles! They were flying around still in the morning. Need a good spray.

Brilliant locstion in the city, Outstanding period building. Very good breakfast, apart from the coffee.
Rather a small room, but that couldn't be helped. Likewise the absence of a lift, so lots of stairs.
Bathroom rather cramped, with not enough shelf space for toiletries, and no proper soap.
Weak and tasteless breakfast coffee.
Breakfast was delicious plenty of choice all very fresh. Location couldn’t have been better very close to the shops

Our room was very nice with a small living room portion and nice sized bedroom and bath. The breakfast was delicious also. The patio out front is lovely and was a great place for our group to gather for drinks before exploring the town.
