Central location but room was tucked away from all the hustle and bustle

Cigarette smoke drifted into my room from people in other rooms sitting outside my room smoking. And the windows were shut. Bi feel like when booking with Booking.com you are given rooms not as nice as you would be given booking directly with the property. I have noticed this not just at this hotel but with all the ones I have booked with booking.com

Great location. Rooms off the garden were well designed and air conditioning was a bonus.
Air conditioning grated frequently when in use which meant we had a bad nights sleep. It was very hot and was needed.
Breakfast was good, nice options on the cooked breakfast menu with good service.
Outdoor bar has nice atmosphere and central location. On arrival the receptionist was friendly. She was very apologetic for a delay in us checking in to our room at 3pm due to a 'situation'. She offered us a free drink at the bar which we accepted.
the room itself was very disappointing for £162 per night (breakfast included) for 2 people. The room was small, dated, stuffy and the carpet was sticky. The bathroom was highly disappointing; the toilet did not flush properly (you had to pump the chain several times for a small flush) the shower was leaking from the hose, the shower cubicle was dated and window could not be opened, meaning poor ventilation. The bathroom had a stale smell to it likely from the drains and was generally dated.
My husband complained to the receptionist who was very defensive in her attitidue; she did not apologise or accept any responsibility, instead she stated 'these things happen'. Having stayed in many hotels in York, we will not be spending our money here again.

Choices
Staff used area outside our accessible room on ground floor as break/vaping/phone call area which disturbed us, dirty dishes and laundry from rooms being serviced piled up outside our room. Noise due to laundry carts and bottles/beer kegs being changed/disposed of.
Close to the restaurants and shops in York we could walk everywhere. A old building with a feel of the period. Nice breakfast.
Service in the restaurant a bit slow but the food was good.
Period charm
Our room had a uncovered dome skylight. We were staying in the summer and it got light early and disturbed our sleep.
