The property was beautiful with lush jungle around you, the restaurant was fantastic with great drink options. The yoga studio was great and all they offer. I got a massage in your room too I set up last minute and it was fantastic. I was so relaxed.
The place is on a mountain with steep hills it there is nothing the property can do to change that so nothing against them!
Very secluded for a nice reset and self-made yoga retreat. This was a beautiful spot to sit for hours, watching birds, the sunset, and the volcano in the mornings, and to simply enjoy life in nature. I enjoyed walking down the hill to the earth lodge for food and coffee, and the Italian restaurant was perfect!
Finca El Tambor has potential, but my experience was mixed and at times unsettling.
When I arrived, no staff were on site to greet or assist me. I was the only guest staying there, which made the place feel a bit eerie. A kind housekeeper (who didn’t speak English) saw I needed help and went out of his way to assist. He eventually connected me with someone who spoke English, and that person contacted the owner, who was able to confirm my room.
To be fair, the owner had messaged me on Expedia with clear directions, but I hadn’t checked my inbox before arriving. That’s on me however, I still feel that someone should have been present to assist guests in person, especially in a remote and unfamiliar area.
The next day, I spoke with the owner, who introduced herself by name and gave me her number. She told me I could contact her anytime I needed anything, and also mentioned that she lives on the property, which was somewhat reassuring.
The surrounding area is very local, and while it’s peaceful during the day, there was loud music and fireworks at night. The room was comfortable, but keep in mind there is no TV, no AC, no heat, and the Wi-Fi was spotty due to the rainy weather. Since the security cameras run on Wi-Fi, they were likely non-functional during those outages, which made safety feel questionable at times.
If you’re on a honeymoon or just want a quiet escape from the city, this could be a peaceful retreat. For solo travelers wanting total solitude, it might work
Excelente lugar para relajarse
Paraíso muy cercano a Antigua
Queda en mi lista de viajes de vuelta
Nice and clean great views friendly people
La vista esta increible. La experiencia inolvidable y definitivamente vale la pena el work out para llegar. Esta experiencia la repetiremos con mi esposa
I had a wonderful experience at Finca El Tambor. It’s located in the middle of nature and is very clean. Suzy is helpful and responsive. The restaurant, Ivanno, serves delicious food, and the owner is a great host.
I do wish I had known beforehand about the long walk and the hill leading to the property. Along the way, I also wish there had been more lighting. That said, I really appreciated the flashlight provided in the house—it was very helpful when I arrived late from Antigua or left early for my trip to Lake Atitlán. I highly recommend it.
Finca El Tambor is a truly special place—more of a retreat-style experience away from everything, than a traditional hotel. The absolute highlight was the breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and volcanoes..
The accommodations were cozy, with a very comfortable bed, small kitchen, and even a yoga mat, and welcome bottle of wine which was a nice touch. Just a heads-up: this is more of a glamping experience than a hotel stay, and it’s good to know that going in.
It’s located about 20 minutes outside downtown Antigua, and is also very close to Hobbitenango. The drive up is a winding dirt road along the edge of a mountain. It didn’t bother our Uber driver, but it might feel a bit nerve-wracking for those not used to that type of terrain as it is narrow and a bit rugged.
The biggest challenge for our group was getting to our accommodations. The paths are STEEP and cobblestone, and definitely NOT suitcase-friendly. One friend in our group, who is not an avid hiker like the other two of us, had a really hard time with the steep walk, and we’d strongly caution that this is not the best choice if you have any mobility issues or cannot navigate steep hills.
I will say that our hosts were extremely responsive and did everything possible to support and accommodate us, for which we were very grateful
Overall, Finca El Tambor is stunning, peaceful, and unique—but likely best suited for travelers who are comfortable with a more rustic and adventurous setting.
The first room we booked was a small bungalow, but because of the constitution noise they moved us without a fuss to an apartment which was actually much nicer. The views were amazing and you could see birds and other small wildlife right at your balcony, and also sitting on the sofa inside thanks to the big window. The value for money in terms of accommodation is ok, and you can get there for a reasonable price using Uber (if you book through them the price is more than double).
Kitchen seemed to be equipped for basic cooking though we didn't try.
The lady we were talking to was pretty available and tried to be as helpful as possible given the circumstances.
Might be our bad luck but it was VERY noisy when we were there. There was construction on the road that started early and only finished at around 4pm, in the evening there was a super loud party from a nearby village. Also in the morning music started from somewhere and woke us up. Overall, we couldn't really enjoy sitting outside looking at the view and the sound of the birds.
Dinner was crazy overpriced for basic food in a medium quantity, my husband was actually still hungry and they refused to bring more food. We expected more from the most expensive dinner we had in Guatemala.
Also, when we asked for hikes around to explore they didn't really know to tell us, and when we asked to leave our luggage for a few hours there was no option so keep that in mind.
The location is absolutely beautiful. I was unlucky that it had a freak rain day the day I was there so there was no visibility. But my second morning was stunning.
I think this place is absolute perfect for couples wanting a private sanctuary away from anyone else - you can cook dinner under the stars and do little hikes around the area.
Just in general I think the food and extras are overpriced. I was quoted a super high price for a massage them got one much cheaper down the road (maybe their masseuse was better - but felt a bit excessive). I would suggest not getting the full board unless you want to hang at the property all day / like such specific meal structure. They serve them at 9,1pm and 6pm and you have to be there within 10 or so mins. The food is Guatemalan so you get the taste of the culture but it’s a bit repetitive, and you can’t choose at all (im veggie so it was alot of soup). Lots of food tho - you won’t go hungry!
I got it as I thought there are no options up there without a car but there’s a really great restaurant serving food all day at the lodge just down the road.
If you’re a solo traveler that wants the remote nature experience but also likes some other people around / options of things to do the place down the road might be a better option
The views were lovely and the bed was the most comfortable I'd experienced on my trip so far. It was great to be around nature and disconnected while still being able to connect (I had to do some work). The facilities were modern and as pictured. A nice retreat to get out of the city for a night. The staff were few but they were all very lovely.
It was really hard to get a taxi to pick me up (I ended up organizing through the hotel, but that was pricier), it's a bit off the main track and then once you get there there's a bit of a trek to get to the rooms, but there wasn't any visible staff around to help direct or answer questions (it's all virtual). It's not far to get to the room but it's quite steep, so being a solo traveller it was difficult to safely bring my bag to the room (I definitely damaged the bag, but also not many people bring luggage with wheels on their trip, so partly my mis-planning). I did get help upon checkout by arranging with the hotel for someone to help with the bag, but I wish I didn't have to spend my short stay coordinating so many things (there were other minor things) with the hotel versus actually just enjoying the beautiful view, which is not the expectation for the price paid. I would still come back, but there's definitely room for improvement for a more high-end hotel stay.
The view was espectacular, the only thing is limited dinning options, the food was expensive and not worth it
