Would go back if desperate, but definitely not the kind of place I’d visit for a special occasion.
Pros:

Lovely old building in a beautiful village setting.
The staff are absolutely amazing- doing an incredible job. Everyone we met was so professional and lovely.
The shower, hand basin and loo in our en suite was also very clean, so someone had made a huge effort to do the best they could with the awful room.
Bedding & towels also very clean.

Cons:

My daughter called it a ‘catfish’ and I think that best describes it.
Lovely outside/ grounds & ground floor public areas look fine.
However, our room, number 20 was very shabby. Paintwork was awful, walls and furniture knocked & chipped. Bathroom floor tiles broken.
Years of mould on sash windows.
No dust on skirting boards because there weren’t any in our room!
Filthy upholstered chair which looked like it was found in a skip.

A lovely retreat set in nice surroundings
Pros:

The hotel is a real gem, set in a lovely part of the country in a lovely location, surrounded by nature, fine views, gardens, and sheep. The room was a good size and was well appointed and comfortable; both breakfast and dinner were fine and the Gilbey's restaurant can be recommended.

Cons:

Some reviewers have noted that the hotel is a little tired in places, and indeed, some parts had seen better days, but it didn't really detract from the atmosphere of what is a historic coaching inn, and we'd have no reservations in recommending it for its character and we may well return.

Lovely staff and atmosphere but really does need a good clean
Pros:

The paintwork on the doors in the corridor were absolutely filthy. The room had cobwebs and dirt hanging out under the radiators. All the doors and handles weren’t just dirty as if they had missed a bit they were proper minging. It’s a beautiful old country house and it is styled lovely accordingly but the carpets and paintwork need a good scrub or redoing. The bed linen was clean and beds comfy. Couldn’t bare walking on the carpet without shoes on. The staff were amazing so friendly and welcoming cannot fault them and the atmosphere was great to me if you were passing through but it really does need a good scrub.

Cons:

Filthy doors and paintwork throughout carpets were rotton
