Beautiful location. Super lovely staff. Great room. Good food!

We stayed at The Chestnut Horse for my partner’s birthday and, overall, had such a lovely time. It’s one of those places that feels like a proper escape — a beautiful Grade I listed building, peaceful surroundings and a gorgeous footpath for country walks less than a minute away. The whole area is stunning, and the locals were so friendly too. A very refreshing change of pace from London!

Our room was a great size and the bed was ridiculously comfortable.

The food was exquisite. Genuinely. Even the pastries and coffees included with our stay were mind-blowingly good, and everything we ate tasted like 5-star quality. The drinks were excellent too (highly recommend the Mermaid Gin & Champagne cocktail).

The staff really made the stay. Everyone was incredibly friendly and repeatedly went above and beyond for us. At one point they even opened the downstairs shop especially so we could stock up on snacks and drinks for the night! We were also given complimentary fizz and a lovely postcard to commemorate my partner’s birthday, which was such a thoughtful touch.

A couple of things worth knowing if you're travelling with a little one: there were no cots available, and the stairs definitely aren't buggy friendly. It didn't ruin our stay, but it's something I'd want to know beforehand if visiting with a baby or toddler.

At a little over £100 a night, I initially thought it was on the pricey side, although that seems to be fairly standard these days. Aside from the dust and the price, I honestly couldn't fault the place.

Beautiful setting, exceptional food, ridiculously comfy bed and genuinely lovely people. We left very happy and would absolutely recommend it — particularly for a peaceful couples' getaway, birthday treat or a solo escape. 10/10 in almost every department and we'd happily come back.

The staff were amazing, full of knowledge and great recommendations. The area was beautiful, the food was delicious (the crab and trout raviolo starter was incredible!) and the bed was beyond comfortable. Excellent value for money.

Friendly staff, great food, lovely room.

Impressive from start to finish. Although space in the room was limited, it was not of any importance for a nights stay. The bedroom was beautifully old and quirky. All facilities, toiletries of high quality purchases. The bed which filled the room gave a wonderful nights sleep. Top quality high bed and mattress, quilt and pillows to just drift off in, and a fabulous nights sleep.

Staff were very friendly and the Manager Jamie went above and beyond, being a great asset to the team.
Great Food too

The place overall was superb - location, room, facilities, food, value for money and staff!

As a solo female traveller, I was made to feel extremely welcome and comfortable by the staff (especially Evie) to dine alone for dinners, lunches and breakfast.

I was very impressed with the offerings on the complimentary continental breakfast - I was not expecting a warm sausage bap! Perfect.

I now have a very soft spot for The Chestnut Horse and will most definitely be returning!

Lovely venue in a beautiful village
Stylish room which was comfortable, unfortunately very dusty and cold. Hairs all over the bathroom floor. Staff sorted out the heating eventually which was appreciated.
The food was nice, good service. Cold tea served for breakfast. Disappointed with the breakfast choices.

A fabulous stay.. We thought the food was wonderful despite a few negative feedback reports we've read.. We had a lunch and an evening meal with no complaints whatsoever. Food I would give 10/10. Staff are friendly and extremely helpful. All a credit to the business. Now for my only criticism, we booked a double room which was very tight to maneuver but bearing in mind the age of the building it was okay although update wouldn't go a miss. overall a wonderful stay and would highly recommend.

When booking the accommodation we were led to believe that breakfast was an available option for £15 each. Upon arrival mu husband asked about a breakfast and we were told this was not available but we could have a pastry and coffee at 9am. This was too late for us as we wanted to get into Winchester and explore for the day. Also my diet means a pastry is not an option for me and no alternative was offered.
Whilst we appreciated the building was a characterful 16th century property there appeared to be no banister as you came out onto the landing this seemed dangerous to me especially if there was a child or someone lost their balance or footing so not sure how this passed health and safety aspect.
The room skirtings/plugs in particular were dusty and this was not dust from an old building it had built up, the bin in the bathroom was rusty and then when we took a shower we realised why. the bathroom was sort of set up as a wet room in that the walls and floors had tiling however there was only one panel of glass next to the toilet and the end was left open. I had a very short and careful shower and even so the water from the shower bounced off my body and head and flooded the bathroom floor (hence the rusty bin situated underneath the sink). The village was lovely and quaint we enjoyed walking around.
(I DO THINK THE POINTS SUCH AS STEEP STAIRS AND NO BANISTER/RAIL AT EDGE OF LANDING SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTED IN THE ADVERT TO HIGHLIGHT FOR PEOPLE WHO MAY HAVE MOBILITY ISSUES) Also no mainstream TV channels were available only Sky options and American channels we are British! Great emphasis on the pub and dining side of things but needs improvement and a bit more concentration to improve the accommodation/breakfast offering for guests.

To begin with some positivity, the Chestnut Horse sits in the middle of the picturesque village of Easton, and on arrival it looked like it would ‘tick the boxes’ of what we were hoping for. A country pub, with accommodation above, which was described as blending rustic elegance, with contemporary comfort.

My wife and I booked this many months earlier, for a 4 night stay, as we were attending a family wedding at the nearby Avington Park/Country House, which is the centre-point of the overall Estate (and which also owns the Chestnut Horse pub).


(Didn't like - continued) The collection of staff (bar/restaurant) all appear like they’re going through the motions. No-one actually gives the impression of caring, or wanting to show any genuine hospitality? They walk around making every effort to avoid making eye-contact, or ask a simple “Is everything okay with your meal, do you need anything else?” It could be a lack of training, experience or confidence, or maybe a combination of all three. It gives the impression that it’s Uni Students, temporarily filling in there during their summer break, and just ‘playing at it’.

So this is a genuine Review, from a honest couple who experienced 4 nights there. Unfortunately we had pre-paid in full, prior to arrival. (£673 - so it wasn’t exactly cheap, at £168 per night).

If it hadn’t been pre-booked, and with us needing to be based locally for the Wedding, then we’d definitely have checked-out after just the first night.
