Overall, this hotel is poorly maintained, in a bad location, and not worth the price—there are better options if you ask
Pros:

The only positive aspect of our experience was the young staff member who genuinely tried to accommodate our needs.

Cons:

This hotel was not what we expected. It was very dirty, and one of our two rooms didn’t have hot water. The place felt completely neglected, with no attention to even basic necessities—there wasn’t even toilet paper provided, and we had to ask for it. The location was also disappointing, far from the main attractions and surrounded by clubs and questionable establishments, with loud music coming from the street. We also had concerns about security after sunset. We suspect that this “hotel” might actually function as a motel for dubious activities. We strongly advise against staying here. For the $30 we paid per night, you can find much better hotels with beautiful views and better locations, but many of them aren’t listed on online platforms—you’ll need to ask local tour guides to find them.

Obelisk hotel experience
Pros:

The staff's hospitality is on another level. So reliable, pick up at AXUM airport you find them waiting for you. The smile from the people of AXUM around is so welcoming.
To Nathie, the young hotel Manager, wow, what a soul.
Already missing your coffee guys with that essence.
You do not to worry about foreign exchange that much because they use USD also

Cons:

I didn't like the disturbing sound from the bar at ground floor. Fortunately enough they quickly sorted that out

Bed bug infestation - avoid

Nati, the manager, is personable and helpful.

Cons:

I have bed bug bites all over my body from staying at this hotel. I am hoping that I didn’t take any of them with me in my luggage! Sadly, it is very difficult to rid of bed bugs and this would appear to be a large infestation and is likely to be in other rooms.
Also the room that I had was not clean. In particular, the bathroom had pigeon droppings all over it. However, the toilet also needed a good clean.
Like many hotels without an effective technique for removing steam from the shower, my room smelled strongly of mould.
Although I was given the quietest room in the hotel, it was still very noisy. Every Sunday, for example, there is a nearby Orthodox Church that broadcasts chanting starting at 2am - joy! The hotel is also next to the town bus station and across the road from a bar - and there is a bar within the hotel itself.
I have no idea why others have given this property a high score, except as a favour to the owner. I wish that I had never stayed there!

Needs significant improvement overall.
Pros:

The place is noisy, the room is cold, the breakfast is not organized, and among all the hotel management not professional as they charged more than the amount booked online (on the pretext of birr devaluation). It is not fair that the hotel is given high score when booking online.

Wonderful!
Pros:

A great hotel in Axum with strong WiFi, hot water, and delicious food. The staff were amazing. Nati speaks perfect English and helped reschedule my booking and can organize tours of all the historical sites and churches in Axum. Highly recommend!

Very welcoming owners, local neighborhood feel, comfy room
Pros:

The hotel is run by a lovely family who were very welcoming and helpful. They even dropped me to the airport in Shire for free.
