Potential for improvement in booking management
Pros:

Despite the negative experience before and during check-in, we had actually a good experience after. We almost decided to check out after 1 night (we booked 4 nights), but the reason we decided eventually to stay was the food. They had an amazing chef, food while limited (not everything on the menu is available) was delicious and we ate every night there. Staff was also actually friendly and helpful, and we loved the cute resident dog - Charlie. Location was also great near the Hanuman Temple, away from the crowd on a hill. Due to the steep slope, we usually only walk once a day to the centre of town. Balcony is shared and nice to hangout when the weather is sunnier and warm. Room was actually cosy once we settled in and price we paid for the room was value for money. If not for the issues highlighted, we would have given it a perfect 10, so hopefully they address the booking problems and are more responsive to messages.

Cons:

There was a lack of communication during pre-check in and also issue during check-in. We messaged days prior to check-in via booking app and also via WhatsApp regarding transportation to the hotel from bus terminal but received no reply. Upon arrival in Shimla, our phone battery was low and we called to obtain information on way to get to the hotel as there was a big festival that we were unaware of and roads were jammed / blocked apparently. It was a struggle to reach the hotel after receiving piece-meal instructions (taking cab to “the lift”, walking to a grocery store near a hotel and waiting for a taxi to bring us to the hotel) as it was getting darker and started to rain. Upon arrival, it seems that our booked room was given away (we were told by manager their system had not synced the info from booking app, and our room was given away, and the person managing messages was on vacation so our messages were not read). We were offered first a small room near the receptionist which we rejected due to concerns about noise and people hanging out at reception, and then another room without a view (sandwiched between rooms) which seemed occupied and which we also rejected. At this point, it was apparent that they had given our room with view away. When we insisted on our booked room since it was late and dark, the manager finally moved the occupants in the room with view and started cleaning the room for us and got it ready in half an hour. However, due to the rush, obviously cleaning was not done properly. A musty smell was detectable and sink had still food remnants and underside of toilet bowl had splatters. We simply didn’t understand why this was not resolved as soon as we called to ask for directions to get to the hotel.

Pros:

Late check in was possible. Personell was extremely helpful and even made us toast in the middle after we reached the hotel with 3hours delay. Location is near the temple.

Cons:

The hotel is hard to reach by cab. We did not have a local cab driver and it took him nearly 40min to find the hotel.
