very dated hotel - rooms needs modernising

very disappointed with this hotel - it looked very worn out with a lot of dark wood which didn't help with its appearance - it definitely needed a severe update....
the room was very dark & a strange set of obscured glass windows at the back of the room made it very eerie & the wind rattled through one of them which made it very unsettling as you didn't know what was behind...
the carpet needed replacing and the bathroom was very outdated.
The restaurant for the evening meals was however, nicely decorated but the breakfast room was very sparse and the menu was very restricted with very small portion sizes - also they were very mean with the drinks. Got the impression that COVID restrictions had been used to keep the costs down by continuing to serve you at the table despite the fact that there was a breakfast buffet area at the side that had definitely been in operation at some point in the past with a toaster & space for a buffet spread. However instead we were served a small plate of fruit & then a small plate of a cooked choice which was very limited in options ( approx 3 to be precise) & sadly the options didn't even change from day to day...
It was one of the furthest hotels in Monteverde and I think the windiest !!...

Difficult and unpleasant experience
Pros:

Half the hotel rooms are below grade. The top section of the hotel has excellent views and nice rooms. There was no refrigerator in our room.

Hotel staff initially put us in the basement room. Once we realized the poor location of out room, we asked to be put in a better room. Hotel staff hesitantly put us in a room at the higher section of the hotel, perched over a hillside with incredible views of the mountains. Overall the initial contact and experience was poor, after some finessing it turned out alright.

Cons:

Hace mucho frío por la noche y tienes que pedirles el calefactor porque no lo dejan en la habitación. Personal de recepción bastante seco y cortante

We had a cozy 2-night stay at the lodge with delicious food close to town and the cloud forest.
Pros:

Breakfast and dinner were excellent. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were very clean, and the beds were very comfortable. The design of the building is very ecofriendly.

Cons:

The bathroom is awkward. The vent goes directly to the hallway to allow the steam to escape the bathroom. However, everything else can escape as well. People can hear absolutely everything in the bathroom when they are walking by your room.

The hotel’s proximity to the Monteverde Reserve entrance was very convenient. The breakfast waitstaff were nice and kind

This was the most uncomfortable bed we slept on during our trip to Costa Rica. Given the high price we paid (2 adults and 1 child), the room was very poorly equipped—there was no soap in the shower, no tissue boxes, and no kettle. The room smelled of mold, and the bathroom was not properly cleaned, with hair left behind. Overall, the experience did not match the price or expectations.
