really nice stay, excellent breakfast, and rooms spacious and comfortable, in magnificent building
Pros:

room really spacious, and comfortable.
Breakfast was brilliant, one of the better breakfasts i've had at hotels
hotel tucked away nicely and not on a main road etc, so super quiet, but super easy to reach

Cons:

beer selection at the bar was a little weak.

Pros:

Staff fantastic, best asset. Rooms spacious which was helpful when no aircon. Pillows thin and hard and drainage from shower and basin very slow leaving a scum. Breakfast excellent. Parking great. Gardens lovely. Location great.

Dogs aren't just an after thought, they are welcomed!
Pros:

Farington Lodge is a beautiful building with lovely ground, but what stood out most for me was that dogs aren't just an after thought, they are welcomed.

The grounds has numerous dog waste bins dotted around. There were dog treats in the room on arrival. The receptionist asked our dog's name before we'd even brought him into the building. We were allocated room 2, a downstairs room at the end of a corridor. We were told to use the fire exit door next to our room to access the grounds if our dog needed the toilet (particularly at night), to save us from having to walk him through the hotel.

A staff member recognised that our dog was being reactive as he wasn't enjoying being somewhere new around lots of people, so they set-up a private breakfast table in the empty bar area for us. Another staff member was so kind as she brought him a sausage and even cut it up and fed it to him by hand!

Cons:

Some parts of the hotel are looking a bit sorry for themselves and could do with modernising or updating.

Adequate
Pros:

Size and cleanliness of the room, together with its proximity to The Open golf at Birkdale

Cons:

The temperature regulator on the shower was not working meaning that we nearly got scolded when taking a shower as we could not access any cold water. This was terrible following a day out in nearly 30 degrees of heat. The shower water was so hot we could have got burnt in it.
Despite complaining to reception on the early evening before departure, nothing was done, no fresh towels and the water still nearly scolded us next morning.
Also needed access back into the room on the morning of departure and the key snapped in the room door. We had left a phone chargher in the room.
Reception promised to ring us once they accessed the room to discuss recovery of the phone charger but as yet, 4 days later we have heard nothing.
NOT IMPRESSED

Not what we were expecting from the information published on the Booking.com website.
Pros:

One night stay in transit to Scotland. Coveniently located very close to M6. Plenty of free parking.

Cons:

Must have been a very attractive building at one time but now a slightly run down commercial hotel located next to an industrial complex.

Death trap hotel
Pros:

Allocation was good

Cons:

Booking was made and when we arrived we were given out room number, when we got to the room we saw a fan blowing and it must have been over 30 degrees C, non of the 3 windows would open, this must also be a fire safety hazard as the only escape was the front door, Health and Safety need to be told

Good for one night, but I would not recommend staying longer.
Pros:

The general building and gardens were excellent. The dining room was very nice (a beautiful room for breakfast). Also, the breakfast was excellent. The staff were friendly and receptive. The room was excptionally clean.

Cons:

For a 4 star hotel, there were many aspects that were more like 2-star. For example, in the bathroom, many tiles were cracked. In the bedroom, in places (near the window), the paint was falling off. The ironing board has a big stain. When we stayed, the weather was excellent (30 degrees). However, the room had no ventillation (windows could not open more than a small amount and there was no air con). We did have a fan, but the heat was unbearable. Furthermore, the shower did not work. There appeared to be no cold water. Luckily, there was a bath in the bathroom.
