the woman who greeted me to let me into the hotel was lovely! If you dont like staying at 'regular hotels', this one is perfect. very comfortable, felt very much like a home, not a hotel, with the privacy of a hotel room.
The decor matches the building, which has been kept as an Edwardian building.
The shower was either freezing or scorching, so baths were used instead. And I'm not a fan of baths for actually cleaning my body.
The property is a historic building that I love, the antique elevator and the architecture of the building was pleasing to the eye. The photographer who took photos for this place was a professional
We knew before booking that the sky train ran by the property but they went by every 30 seconds so absolutely no sleep even with earplugs. There was a splitter taped into a wall outlet which was/is a fire hazard. We had to go looking for a fire escape in case of an emergency, we found them located out the bedroom windows. If there was a fire emergency you may not find the way out in time as they were unmarked. The homeless folks in the area were doing drugs where we parked. The elevator once we got into did feel quite unsafe with a lot of clunking and the decking of the elevator floor was about the thickness of a single sheet of plywood. There was a knot in the floor that fell out giving the riders a close look at how thin the floor was and how high up you got from the ground. We are seasoned travellers and are not complainers but our best advice is to keep looking for another place.
I AM HAPPY IF POSSIBLE BREAK FAST AND COFFEE YOU HAVE ONLY NUSCAFE
It was so quirky and beautiful to see the history
There was nothing I didn't like about it.
large, warm, clean room
there is a strong smell of stray or dead rats in the hallway
Old reto style
Sky train noise, parking,
The sheer architecture and all the adornments has you living somewhat in the early 1900s. The Check in process was easy, the staff amazing and the owner a real gem. This place is by far the coolest hotel I have ever stayed in and the value was phenomenal. Every room is an entire 1 bedroom apartment loaded with anything you would need for a comfortable stay that feels like home. The Antique lift is fun and beautiful. The building is secure. Located right in the downtown core of New Westminster everything you need for food, shopping and transit options is within 1 block walking distance. A real hidden gem if I ever found one.
Absolutely everything i did not want to ever leave.
I love this hotel and actually booked this visit specifically to stay here, not for anything else in the area. These "rooms" are really apartments frozen in time, with hardwood floors, wallpaper, curtains, decorative plates and warm lighting. A full kitchen, gas stove, cupboards for days and even a clawfoot enamel bathtub, Watching a VHS movie and listening to the faint hiss of the radiators warming your back is something that takes me back to my own childhood and you simply do not find anywhere else.
There is nothing I did not like, though for people who prefer a modern feel, you won't enjoy Arundel. Floors are old and creak, rooms are darker (except the kitchen) and bathtub is better suited for baths (though it is possible to shower).
Note to management: Please NEVER change any of these things - they are a huge part of the charm and warmth of the place!
Location and prixe
Bed wasnt comfortable and food ans staff unhelpful
They have embraced the theme of the early 1900s. The space is great: full kitchen and living room.
They only cleaned upon request and the stay was for two weeks (so they came in a total of twice, each time after asking). There is no staff onsite and unless you are available during their limited hours, you are treated as a burden. We literally saw a dead body the morning of checking out that was being taken away and it felt very unsafe going to the parking lot at night, as well as sometimes people were using drugs in the alcove of the front door. Surely there are things that could be done to make the situation more safe, like not having to get out over your vehicle to open the gate for the parking lot (which also isn't locked) and stairs that would take you to the back door instead of having to walk around on the street.
Nothing
Sound of the train, Drug people near the building and infont of the entrance.
When I arrived I was met by Shueet, who is super friendly and helpful, almost matching the persona of the mansion. She introduced and explained a lot about the building and the facility. The unit has what we need to feel home.
It's next to transit, even if that is 45 min away from the city center. There are restaurants and the water is nearby. The architecture was historical and quirky and fascinating.
The train goes by RIGHT THERE, every 2 min. Nothing was completely clean: dishes, especially disappointing because those are easy to clean. Microwave: weak. Shower in a clawfoot tub situation: the curtain was hung on a slant so dipped lower and kept clinging to my body as I showered: not ideal. There was one washcloth for two people for 5 days--that is not enough. All towels were old. All the linens, the decorative plates and the to-use dishes looked like they were brought in from the huge Salvation Army depot down the hill.
Check-in was weird: was asked several times to specify when we'd arrive, then was busy with other guests when arrived. First time ever been charged a deposit for damages at a hotel, and it was not speedily processed after checkout, despite small size of the establishment.
Elevator consistently stopped between floors, requiring extra button pushing and ensuing panic the first time. Oh, and clincher: there's a rehab clinic or something right next door so our view and out exits and entries were almost always through a crowd of people on substances, front AND back door.
I'm just sad the building is so beautiful and suites are spacious but 1) the train is very disruptive and there's no attempt to muffle the noise through insulation (there's not even a screen on that window) 2) it's not being kept up anymore, and cleanliness standards are not what they should be for $180CAD/night place. Would not return.
the hotel is very dirty and unhygienic. bad smell as soon as you enter. it is very unclean and staff is not professional at all. The hotel has charged me full amount inspite of cancelling my booking.
The building itself was very cool — full of character and charm. I appreciated the earplugs being provided and the complimentary wine, which was a really nice touch. The apartment had great amenities, and it was nice to have a full kitchen and living space rather than a standard room.
The arrival process was confusing and could be improved. There was no clear signage or instructions on where to check in, and I only found out later that the “office” was actually the restaurant next door. The greeting at check-in felt rushed and a bit frustrated rather than welcoming, which was disappointing after a long drive. The fridge didn’t get very cold, and power outlets were limited. The area is also a bit sketchy at night, though I understand that’s out of the host’s control.
Great location. Loved the decor. Very friendly and helpful staff. The train just outside the window didn’t really bother me. In fact, for me it added to the vintage urban vibe.
No screens on the windows, so mosquitoes could enter if you left the windows open.
