Overall, our stay was pleasant, thanks to the fantastic location and spa. However, the experience didn't quite reach the 5-star standard I expected. While the building's exterior is stunning, the interior felt sparse and lacked the decor or artwork to match. We also encountered several service oversights: our room was missing all toiletries and basic supplies upon arrival, and we were served the wrong meal at dinner. Even at breakfast, we frequently had to ask for replenished items like juice and fruit. While these were "minor niggles" individually, the recurring nature of these issues took away from the sense of indulgence I was looking for.
Room Essentials: Despite the promise of Elemis toiletries, our room had no soap or products at all, and only a tiny remnant of a toilet roll on arrival. There was also no toilet brush.
Dining Issues: We were served the wrong order at dinner, and the breakfast buffet was poorly managed. At breakfast you could eat freely from the buffet and order one item from the cooked breakfast. Porridge was listed under the buffet so I ordered that and the cooked breakfast off the cooked part of the menu only to be told that the porridge would be an extra £10!
Breakfast Lapses: We constantly had to ask for basics like juice and fruit pots to be refilled. Even when the juice was finally replaced, there were no glasses available to drink it.
Spa restrictions: My partner finished chemotherapy several weeks earlier so this was a recovery break and celebration but on arrival to the spa they would not do any treatments on her due to this even though her doctor had said there were no issues with this and other spas are fine with it.
Everything is great - it always delivers.
Everything was perfect
The property itself is absolutely beautiful. The location was fantastic. Our room was a great size, decorated beautifully & such a comfortable bed.
Unfortunately we didn’t get the experience that we had hoped for. For the price of this property I don’t feel the staff treat you accordingly. The spa especially ruined the majority of our experience. For an extra £40 EACH (which can only be used only until checkout at 11) we arrived and were basically treated like second class citizens because “they were busy with paying day clients” (staff members words). They wouldn’t let us use the changing rooms for the same reason and made us go back to our room to get changed which took 20 minutes out of our short spa time allowance. I feel like the whole stay was all about taking us for any extra penny they could get out of us from the minute we arrived. The breakfast was okay but the awful, loud music played above your head at 7am wasn’t pleasant. I’ve felt more welcome & looked after in a hotel that I paid £40 a night for and we checked out feeling irritated and disappointed. Our experience has definitely put us off returning
It’s a very grand building and well set out. The staff were all lovely. We didn’t use the spa but people who did talked about how good it was. The restaurant was very nice and food was excellent.
There are some signs of wear and tear which should be dealt with. Not due to being an old building but general fabric. Single ply toilet paper should be a no no for such a prestigious place too.
Everything
The location is fabulous in a historic building near the original Baths and opposite the pump house.. The staff could not have been more helpful. However, it is important to point out that the hotel has been taken over by new company about a month ago and room bookings do not include the cost of the spa, which is £40 per person a day. There is also no on-site parking although you will be directed to Free on street parking nearby.
I felt there was a little corner cutting – for example toast not brought to your table table for breakfast
Very clean and fresh spa was lovely and relaxing .
Car park locked at 7:30 meaning had to park car on the street
We did a spa package with bed and breakfast for my birthday and it was wonderful. The hotel is a beautifully restored Georgian building. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was elegant with extremely comfortable beds, and the spa was lovely: peaceful, clean, very relaxing & luxurious-feeling. We went to Buxton by train and it was so easy and convenient to get to the hotel - it was literally a 5 min walk!
Location
Spent over £1400 for a two night stay in a “suite”.
I have never spent so much for such an unpleasant stay.
I turned up two hours before check in and was told to come back later. Not even offered into the hotel to wait in the lounge. So sat in my car for two hours in the rain.
Then they charged me for two meals that I didn’t take and refused to refund me.
Restaurant at breakfast: menus ripped and stained, really hugely underwhelming.
Noise at night: paper thin walls could hear people moving around all night in other room.
Definitely one to avoid.
Beautifully well appointed hotel in a central location. Rooms spacious and comfortable and equipped to a high standard. Excellent spa facilities which were easy to use (not complicated booking procedures / time allocations)
Nothing, really. A slightly sub-standard pastry for breakfast on day 1 but a minor grumble. The rest of the breakfast menu was delicious. It was not a cheap mini break but it was certainly one of the best hotels I've stayed in, in the UK, recently. 😁
Never been to a spa before and I'm hooked now

Magnificent location in a beautifully restored building. The breakfast was excellent.
The room had not been properly stocked. There was no coffee, the soap container was empty and the shower cap box was empty. The check in process was poor with a queue of people developing waiting to check in
Perfect
Cost of parking expensive , No dressing gowns
In room , No Slippers , No towels changed after evening shower , asked for clean for next morning
Shower , cheap pillows ( uncomfortable)!!
Everything
For some reason a service charge was added when I ordered drinks at the spa bar. When I queried it I was told it was a mandatory charge but we had not been charged on previous orders. The next order had no service charge. The following an optional service charge. Service charges on meals ordered at, and delivered to your table are expected but drinks only when you have physically walked to the bar to order we personally dont feel deserve a mandatory tip.
Absolutely lovely hotel and spa. Room was very comfotable and Spa facilities were excellent. Food in the restaurant was delicious.
Beautifully refurbished hotel. Lovely spa
Breakfast service was slow.
