Atmosphere: The ryokan is beautifully decorated with Shiko Munakata prints and traditional folk crafts, creating a cozy and authentically Japanese atmosphere. Every corner, from the tatami guest rooms to the bath area, is full of charm and feels wonderfully relaxing.
Dining at Itogura: At the restaurant attached to the inn, Itogura, you can enjoy rare and excellent sake as well as unique dishes such as the owner’s specialty, coffee-simmered sweet beans. Every meal I had was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend booking a plan that includes meals.
Breakfast: The breakfast included with the stay was generous, wholesome, and satisfying. It gave me plenty of energy to start the day.
Hospitality: The okami was incredibly bright and cheerful, and her warmth was truly uplifting. This is a wonderful family-run inn, and their hospitality made my stay especially memorable.
Location: Near Miyauchi Station, the inn is close to Kumano Taisha Shrine, a well-known spiritual site associated with love and relationships, as well as places connected to the folktale The Grateful Crane, such as Chinzoji Temple and Yuzuru-no-Sato. You can also relax at Tsurunoko, a beautifully renovated traditional house nearby.
Access: It is also a convenient base for sightseeing. From Miyauchi Station, Akayu is only about 5 minutes away by train, Yonezawa about 30 minutes, and Yamagata City about 40 minutes.
Train service on the Flower Nagai Line is limited, so it is important to check the timetable in advance to avoid long waits at Station.
This may make spontaneous travel a little difficult for guests relying mainly on public transportation.
However, nearby Akayu Station has a nice café and a spacious lounge area, so waiting there can still be quite comfortable.
A very comfortable traditional Japanese inn on a small side street in this little town, about 10 minutes' walk from the tiny Miyauchi train station. Not a lot of foreign tourists come here so if you can speak a bit of Japanese it will help a lot. Very friendly staff, super helpful and so nice! The on-site deep bath can be used alone or you can indicate if you're comfortable sharing with others of the same sex; about 3-4 people will fit. Delicious Japanese breakfast. There are a few restaurants in town, including a couple of ramen places nearby, but next door is a lively izakaya, popular with locals, which also stocks several local sake and offers flights (menu is all in Japanese). My room with its futon and the separate little annex with my own sink, fridge, and table/chair was just what I wanted. Bathrooms are down the hall and Western style. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the beautiful Kurama Taisha shrine.
Nothing: I'd gladly stay here again!
