Pros:

This hotel is a good value. Situated off the main walking street, nighttime noise is remarkably mild (tourists familiar only with the *reputation* of Bui Vien understand the significance).

It's the little details like the owner smoking in his own lobby, taking his tea there, generally occupying more space than the guests-- details that keep the property in the range of Tourist Stopover rather than destination. This is consistent with locally owned hotels in southeast Asia and shouldn't detract from its charm in any way. I had a very pleasant stay.

If you'll spend any amount in the room, I highly recommend paying the extra 400k for the.room upgrade.

Pros:

The pillows have a sweaty smell.
The first night, the fire alarm went off 3 times, including at 2am :(
The second night, the aircon is not working well. Unable to switch on for a while. Now I understand why there is a sweaty smell from the pillows.
No room cleaning and replentishment of water on the second day.
