Rivers Hotel

The restaurant was closed for refurbishment, which was a slight inconvenience. Overall, it was a Travelodge quality with a nice view.

Place stunk of weed and smoke...room stunk of poo..it was filthy..was at the back of an industrial estate and had lets say "permanent residents" judging by the clothes drying at windows. The restaurant and bar had been closed for 3 weeks and nowhere close to eat. We informed the hotel we were leaving immediately to another hotel. They did reach out the next day and offered a full refund. This place looks nothing like it's pictures. Booking.com should not be listing this hotel.

We were given a standard room when we had booked and paid for a deluxe room with a river view, had to complain to get the room we had paid for and still didn't have a river view. We had planned to have an evening meal and breakfast at the hotel which was advertised as available, on arriving we were told restaurant was closed during our stay. The room was freezing with no heating to turn on and my partner suffers from chrones which is even worse when cold, so even though we booked 2 nights we had to check out after 1 night to protect my partners health. On checking out, I requested a phone call or contact from a manager to explain the problems we had suffered during our stay, no contact was received, I have since called the hotel on 3 occasions asking to speak to a manager about this, told they were unavailable each time and that they would get back to me, again no contact received, very poor and unexceptable customer service as well as the poor service during the stay.

It wasn’t clean. When first walked in there was a very powerful smell of disinfectant…now I know why. There was a dirty sock covering the smoke alarm, the shower was broken, ok if you’re 3 foot tall, the shower head didn’t stay up. There was a smell coming from the bathroom, I think it was the sink drainage. The windows were dirty and there was cigarette ash on the window sill. It stated on their website (and still does state it) that breakfast was available but when I arrived they said the restaurant was closed. No breakfast at all, not even some pastries.

So, we stayed exactly a year ago and booked with the same details on the listing this time, and breakfast was included. We had a great stay, hence the return booking. There was no breakfast this time, and the restaurant no longer opens in the morning. In fairness to The Riveralnds, our booking did not state that breakfast was included, and this was my assumption, so it's just to let those who may have visited before know that this is a change. I can't and don't hold The Riverlands responsible for that.
If you are taking a dog, even if this is specified on your booking search, be aware that they are welcome, but you will be charged extra when you arrive to check in. We had been advised via the chat ahead of arrival but I suspect only because I'd opened a chat ahead of arrival. Again, just for advice.
The reason for the poor rating for cleanliness and the bathroom - a used female sanitary product in the bin and blood down the side of the bin. Ew. Health issue, not just cleanliness. I had to stress that as I'm in a chemically induced menopause due to a hormone receptive cancer, it was certainly not mine!

The hotel bar shut quite early and we had to return to our room when we were playing cards. This was also on a Saturday night so slightly odd that it shut at 10.

The shower didn't have a very good drain and flooded the bathroom.

The location suggested attractive views over the river. There was a river. It was not actually ugly, but it was scarcely picturesque. The hotel itself was hard to find, and – bar some recently built flats – seemed essentially to be on an industrial estate.

The building was very run down, although reasonably clean – the bathroom was spotless; the bedroom could have done with some dusting. But generally a decent standard.
