Fine Hotels and Resorts booking expectations
Pros:

Amex FHR: Know before you go:
My room upgrades were denied, and overall, the property lacks a true luxury feel. If you are sensitive to smells, be aware that this is an extremely dog-friendly hotel; unfortunately, there was a noticeable stench of urine throughout. All 4 in our party had immediate congestion that cleared after we left and we questioned if there was mold.

The rooms are not at all plush. The bathrobes felt like cardboard and are well overdue for replacement. While the sparse wood furniture is beautiful, the room lacks soft touches—upholstered headboards (to prevent bruised shins) and comfy chairs by the fireplace would bring it in line with the Pebble Beach standard. The carpet is worn, the shower tile had mildew stains, the bathtub is yucky and there were no luxury extras like toothbrushes, razors and makeup remover toilettes. We found the 2 restaurants only ok. We booked both a Reserve View and a Fire Pit room; for the price point, I would skip this property as there are lots of Fine Hotels and Resort options in Southern California.

One of the most beautiful stays I have had in a while.
Pros:

The staff was above and beyond exceptional. Rooms were very clean. Grounds were beautiful. I have zero complaints other than I wish I would have been notified I wasn’t going to have a balcony. I thought I was and that was the only (slight) let down. We dined at both restaurants and found the staff and food to be amazing

Cons:

I didn’t like leaving. I wanted to stay longer

it was amazing, miss it already!
Pros:

Amazing hospitality and a stunning property with very classy vibes

Cons:

need to drive 15-20 mins to get to main city but understandable as the property is huge and in a bit outer side of the city

Like Downton Abbey with cellphones
Pros:

I say it every Christmas when we're here: this place is like Downton Abbey with cellphones. The Lodge is a beautiful, Craftsman-style hotel still run by the Evans family. The staff's attention to detail is everywhere from the (real) Christmas trees to our suite to the food. Grateful to be here.

The Dining Room was a Colossal Disappointment
Pros:

My family went to the dining room for a special celebration and so an upscale dining experience was anticipated. The service lived up to expectations. The food was a colossal disappointment. Two family members ordered their signature chicken under a brick. If I had made that recipe at home, I would not have eaten it. No seasoning, no flavor with tiny mushrooms over runny mashed potatoes. They did not finish the meal and because it was a group, they did not send it back - just smiled and pretended our lunch was okay. It was not. The price was high, and frankly if it had been $10 I would write the same review. I will never go back there.

Elegant, sophisticated full-service hotel. Very close to the Torrey Pines state reserve with beautiful hiking trails. Nice pool. Beautiful views.

The perfect hotel
Pros:

Staying at the lodge is exactly what you expect from a five star hotel. Sure it doesn’t have the biggest spaces but the construction of everything is timeless. The property is very well maintained and gorgeous and the staff is kind and professional.
