Beautiful view, great staff, intimate, nice pool.
We stayed at Blue Angel for Diving, which we enjoyed the dive leader Andy and the Boat people. The dive shop people are not very accommodating, we were unable to dive on Thursday due to illness, and they would not allow us to switch to Friday or give a refund. The hotel itself and staff is disappointing. Most days you would see the staff sitting around playing on their phones while the sitting area in the lobby is in disarray chairs stacked, cushions a mess, clean lines stacked on the couches. dirty dishes stacked up, water container empty. There was a coke bottle on the side of the steps the entire week we were there. Lounge furniture by the pool legs broken laying there on the ground. Pool needs painting. In our room the outlets are hanging out of the wall 303. looks like black mold on the ceiling and above the air conditioner.
The best way to spend our 10th Anniversary. The room was excellent. The food is superb. We arrived on Monday ,enjoyed live music on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.
I love the staff here, very friendly and kind and helpful. I do shore dives here. The place is always clean and well maintained. They have a dive gear area to setup and it’s perfect. Lots of creatures to see. I have been going there for the last 10 years since I have been living here. I love to take my time and look while diving.
great live entertainment !! The Friday night and Saturday night bands and singers were excellent and the Buffalo wings are just like back home
The Blue Angel Resort, on Melgar, just south of downtown.
This morning, I am asking myself how I've spent so much time on this lovely island, over so many years, and NEVER been at Blue Angel Resort until last night!
Honestly, I've walked past many times, and poked my head in- curious, liking everything I see in those quick glances, but intimidated by the sign about "for resort guests only'. I was afraid that meant the lovely garden and well- reviewed restaurant were off limits.
NOT SO!!
I was tempted by ads regarding one of our favorite bands, Smooth Cats. So, we walked down, marched our anxious little tushes right up to the front desk, and asked if reservations were required for dinner. And that's when Eva's exceptional staff began to show us just how welcome, and well cared for, ALL guests (not just resort residents) at Blue Angel actually are!
We were told the restaurant was open, and given the option to sit near the band in the garden, or in the upstairs restaurant. We had our choice of garden tables, and immediate, friendly service, in both Spanish and English. I loved everything about the ambience right from the start!
The STAFF- attentive, friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Never overbearing or intrusive. I can't say enough good things about the quality of service.
The FOOD- omg...just look at the photos! I promise, it tasted even better than it looks. We ordered a burger with onion rings and a loaded baked potato. I should point out that I do NOT eat much beef, and especially not hamburger, in the US. It always causes ... *ahem* unpleasant issues... for me. But I DO LOVE a good burger, so when I come to Cozumel, I indulge. And I have found my new favorite burger on the island! I ordered it medium, because I've found most places tend to rush your food out and medium rare is usually a bit _too_ rare. NOT here. Our order was perfectly prepared, medium, and next time I'll order medium rare. You have to watch the impressive cheese pull video on this post...it's insane. I swear they use a half pound of both meat AND cheese on every burger. And it's such good quality!
I'm typically hesitant about ordering onion rings- I love them, but I'm always disappointed by them (everywhere). Too much breading (only batter dipped is worth eating IMHO) or lacking real onion flavor. Or, worst of all...soggy. Well, ORDER the Onion Rings! They were perfectly battered, fresh, and tender-but-hefty slices of real onion. So fresh and crispy you have to wait to touch them. No sad, soggy, rings here! The loaded baked potato was perfectly done, with that wonderful jacket -potato flavor that's so hard to find. The beef on top appeared dry to me, but I was wrong. It was tender, tasty, and a great balance of flavors with all the usual toppings.
Portions are extremely generous. We'll be eating leftovers. I usually bring my own containers, but eco-friendly to go boxes were provided. (Thanks for respecting the environment, Blue Angel!) Update- we went back and had Tempura Shrimp with risotto. It was phenomenal!
The VIBE- Blue Angel has atmosphere down to a fine art. Eva (the owner), said "We're not fancy." No, not at all fancy if you mean that in a pretentious, off- putting sense. We were dressed quite casually and felt perfectly at home. But the garden was lovely, the cleanliness and overall presentation, appearance and comfort were absolutely stellar. It felt like a high end private party, without all the pomp & fussiness. That fine balance between comfort and elegance is difficult to achieve, but flawlessly accomplished here.
Entertainment- the band was (as always) talented, engaging, and just plain FUN! Smooth Cats play here on Saturdays and Tuesdays, early enough to let resort guests sleep (morning dives require a good night's rest) but perfect for dinner plans or an early evening (because yes, I am old). The resort is close enough to downtown that you can taxi to late night parties in just a few minutes, for a very few dollars.
I want to mention Eva Kristine, the owner. She is on site, involved, mingling and overseeing the whole operation. Say hello when you see her, and you'll leave with a new friend!
I did a quick 'Sunset at Blue Angel Resort' vibe video, and a longer 'walk up & through' video for those of you with questions about visiting the resort and restaurant. I hope it gives you an idea of how nice our evening was. Sunsets are gorgeous every where on the malecon, but this is a truly relaxing and happy setting for watching them. (Music in the videos is by The Smooth Cats; I just got lucky with timing.)
The magic is gone. This was our third and, alas, final visit to stay here. The motel has gone downhill. The place needs a complete refresh. Everything feels grimy and old. What had been a basic, charming place is now a dumpy motel. The desk staff were uninterested in us at best. The dive shop and restaurant are still good and deserve 5 stars. That's why I'm giving 3 stars to the overall experience.
Everything.
Be very careful about booking with Blue Angel. My first trip with them (years ago) was very good so I decided to return to Cozumel and dive with them with my spouse. I made the reservation and was required to put down $700+ to complete the reservation. However, my wife was denied a visa (she is Brasilian and had to have a visa) so we had to cancel the trip. Despite contacting Blue Angel 2 weeks in advance, they refused to refund my money. If it was $50 or $100 I wouldn't have a problem with it. But when it's over $700, I let them know 2 weeks in advance, and it was thru no fault of mine, this is not acceptable. If they even offered to refund a portion of my money, I could accept that, but they would not do that either.
It was exactly what we were looking for. Beachfront. Breakfast was good. Pool was perfect size to cool off and hang out in. Really enjoyed our stay.
Friendly staff and clean rooms.
As a scuba diver this property is perfect. Has a dock for dive boats, you can do a shallow water dive right off the dock and dive shop on property. The entire staff of the hotel, restaurant and dive shop were fantastic. The property is a little run down but it did not bother me or my wife. Room were clean and comfortable.
Property is in a convenient location to amenities and activities. All rooms have an ocean view. Restaurant serves good food. Good entertainment in the evening. Staff were friendly and helpful. Street noise is loud throughout the day, improves overnight and starts again early in morning with loading of the scuba cylinders.
We really enjoyed the restaurant! Armando, Sergio, Carlos, Ellie and Valentina have top notch service!! The food was excellent as well. We were, however, quite disappointed by the front desk staff! The WiFi was down pretty much our entire 11 day stay, the roof in my parents room leaked in several spots to the point their bed was wet! No compensation was made or any attempt to fix the roof even though rain was expected again. Our maid was also so wonderful and helpful! We really do love the Blue Angel, but were left feeling let down by our most recent stay. I do believe the front desk staff could spend less time on their phones and more time working on their customer service.
A few earlier reviews were pretty scary and our dive group of 12 were a bit anxious headed down to Cozumel. It turned out that all 12 felt the resort was fine, not close to luxury, but fine. Let's start with the accommodations which seemed to create the most negativity recently. Four important things met our needs: Large room, comfortable bed, hot water from 8:00 am to around 6 pm when it seemed to cool off, and the room was clean. Also, all lamps, chairs, couches, safe and wi-fi worked and were useful. It certainly could use updating and a revitalization, but we all thought it was just fine for a dive trip. The resort staff were friendly and accommodating whenever asked for something.
The most important to our group: the dive shop and dive schedule. Because we were 12, we had our own boat and asked for a 9 am departure for our morning 2 tank trip and a 3:30ish departure for our afternoon one tank trip. The dive shop staff are very friendly and helpful. They have a valet service by which they take your equipment (whatever you want them to take) from the shop to the boat and back again. They rinse your equipment and lock it over night in their locker room We all chose to give them our BCDs, regs and fins. We carried our wet suits, hoods, boots, socks, computers and mask, rinsed them ourselves, and hung them either outside on very spacious hanging bars or on our balconies and took our masks and computers up to our rooms. Worked great all week.
Dive guides, boat staff and captain were helpful and accommodating to our requests for dive sites. Aside from one trip north of town for eagle rays we focused on the far southern sites because those structures were just beautiful. We were lucky to have sun all week and very good to amazing visibility. We were asked to begin our accent for our safety stop at 58 minutes which made the total dive usually 63-65 minutes.
All in all, wonderful diving...... knowing this was not Southeast Asia.
Finally, the restaurant: Breakfast is included and the group was pleased with the choices and the quality. Spouse and I loved the eggs and the French Toast. We always had lunch at the restaurant and it was good. Again, good choices. Tortilla soup and the quesadillas were the group's favorites. Dinner is the same as lunch and we ate other places in town or just across the street a few nights. We really like the staff as well. Worked hard for us.
So, why so long a review? A few prior reviews really slammed BA. If I had their experience, I would too. But none of our group did and we knew we were going to a dive resort where the dive shop and the restaurant were the reasons to go and the rooms was just to sleep and shower in.
If you know the accommodations are what they are, you'll really have a great time.
Never written a review, but this was the worst hotel experience. The entire hotel is right on the road. The walls and doors are paper thin. All night you hear motorbikes, trash trucks, and scuba tanks being delivered, good luck sleeping. The smell of sewage permeates the one restaurant from the outhouse below. At night there was a horrible local singer blasting right at the rooms. He sang vulgar songs about getting high pretty sexual stuff. As a dad on vacation with a 14yr old daughter, it wasn’t appreciated. The hotel refused to refund money when we left day 3 after paying for 9. I will NEVER stay there again. Rooms had exposed wires running through the shower. Cant flush toilet paper. Water didn’t get hot, roaches in the room, door had a giant airgap at the bottom.
The Blue Angel was perfect for us… the view of the ocean and sunsets from the balconie was supremely beautiful…. Included Breakfast was great!!! Eggs Benny or Pancakes or half papaya filled with other fruit cottage cheese….. we also took advantage of daily 2 for 1 happy hour… we also snorkled right at thre hotel and that was very cool too… lots of fish, some coral and even lots of sea urchins…would definitely recommend this place… 👍🏝️
Oh, where do I even begin with the Blue Angel Dive Shop in Cozumel? It was simply magnificent! The staff and dive masters were like a ray of sunshine, making diving feel like a party in the water. Now, let’s talk about the Blue Angel Motel that’s attached—what a gem! Built in the glorious year of 1980, it boasts all the charm of a time capsule, complete with a delightful lack of elevators.
The rooms? Oh, they’re just the perfect shade of dimly lit, with furniture that screams “vintage” and a bed that has a fragrance reminiscent of something you’d find in a forgotten corner of a thrift store. And the TV? Ah yes, a true conversation piece that doesn’t work, because who needs entertainment when you have the symphony of low water pressure and five-minute waits for hot water?
The location is just to die for—right on a major highway, serenaded by the soothing sounds of island scooters, motorcycles, and the delightful clanking of tanks. If you’re a light sleeper, well, let’s just say you might want to bring earplugs—or better yet, a soundproof bunker!
When we dared to share our thoughts with the owner, Eva Rasmussen, she greeted us with the kind of rudeness that really makes you feel special. So, my friends, I wholeheartedly recommend the dive shop, but as for staying at the motel? Let’s just say it’s best to look elsewhere. Do check out the photos—they really do capture the essence of the experience!
