The elevator issues. Had to wait in line to get in elevator
My friend and I stayed at Hyatt Place Austin Downtown for the Fourth of July weekend for a girls’ trip, and unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences we have had.
We usually trust Hyatt properties because we have consistently had positive experiences with their cleanliness, reliability, and customer service. I’m not sure if this was specific to this location or an unusually poorly managed weekend, but this stay did not reflect the standards we have come to expect from Hyatt.
I completely understand that Fourth of July weekend in Austin is busy. Crowds and wait times are expected. However, many of the problems we experienced were not simply due to a busy holiday weekend. They were operational issues that significantly impacted guests.
When we arrived, the issues started immediately. The check-in process did not feel smooth, and the front desk staff member assisting us seemed unsure of the proper procedures and did not know how many floors were even in the hotel. When we arrived in our room, we realized we had no towels. Normally, this would be an easy fix, but there was no way to contact the front desk from our room or from our phones. Since only one elevator was working for the entire hotel, it took approximately 15 minutes just to get downstairs to request towels in person. We were told they would be brought up shortly, but it took about an hour.
Unfortunately, the elevator situation continued to create major issues throughout our entire stay. After returning from the fireworks, there was a huge line of guests waiting in the lobby for the only functioning elevator late at night. This was especially concerning because there were elderly guests and guests in wheelchairs, families with young children, and people with strollers who were also stuck waiting with no clear alternative or assistance being provided. We understand that elevators can break and holiday weekends are busy, but there should have been a plan in place to help manage the situation, especially for guests who may not have been able to comfortably stand in a crowded lobby for an extended period of time.
We asked if we could use the stairs instead, but staff refused to direct us to where they were located. The stairs were also not clearly marked, which raised additional safety concerns, especially in a full hotel during a major holiday weekend.
The room itself was clean, and I do want to recognize that the valet team was exceptional. They were friendly, helpful, efficient, and easily the best part of our experience. Shout out to them for being so accommodating and kind. Truly wonderful.
The next morning, the same elevator issues continued. We missed breakfast because we spent approximately 30 minutes waiting for an elevator. When we were finally trying to check out and leave the hotel, the only working elevator became extremely overcrowded due to the amount of guests trying to exit. The crowded conditions and inability to reasonably leave caused my friend to have a panic attack. At that point, this was no longer just an inconvenience. The hotel knew they only had one working elevator during one of the busiest weekends of the year, but there did not appear to be a clear plan to manage guest flow or provide accessible alternatives.
When we spoke with the manager about everything we experienced, we were disappointed that nothing was offered to address the situation or make it right. Given how many separate issues occurred throughout the stay, the lack of acknowledgment was frustrating.
Overall, this stay felt disorganized and poorly managed. A holiday weekend explains crowds, but it does not excuse missing room essentials, a lack of communication options, unclear stair access, a single functioning elevator with no effective contingency plan, or poor guest recovery when concerns were brought forward.
We have always trusted Hyatt, but this experience has made us seriously reconsider staying at this location again
I enjoyed my stay there, the rooms were clean, and the staff was quite helpful.
It offered great value for the service provided.
Nice area, hotel was nice
The valet parking is expensive and when you have to keep adding the tips, it adds up quickly
The staff and the way this place is run! AVOID AVOID AVOID
The staff was great. They were very attentive. The rooms were clean and well taken care of. Then breakfast was good with a lot of options.
Elevators
Location and cleanliness
Only 1 of 3 lifts were in operation, breakfast was pandemonium and not managed by any hotel staff
The location was within walking distance of great food options, movie theater and shopping.
Two of the three elevators were out of order from Saturday to Sunday. Being on the 16th floor we had no interest in walking up and down stairs so it took over an hour to get to our room. The room also had cheezits on the bathroom floor.
