It is an old property that needs further refurbishment. We waited five minutes at check in and finally called for service. Office was closed at 8:45am when when departed. We had to leave the key in our room. One bottle of water in the room otherwise no amenities, coffee or tea, refrigerator, bottle opener. I'd expect more for the rate. They did have two wine glasses. Our garden view looked at roofs. If you leaned over you could see umbrellas below. Second floor walk up. The rooms were just old and very small and not consistent with the more historic and lavish downstairs. Felt like we were in a more threadbare former servants hall. No control of airflow in the room. Outlets were hard to use as the plate stuck out preventing secure seating of the plug in the receptacle. Super noisy bathroom fan which was the only functional light in the bathroom. Insufficient for the standards of the community and the rate.
Our stay at Hotel St Helena was terrific! Beautifully decorated, calm setting. Bed super comfortable, quiet. Staff was so welcoming and very helpful. Location is convenient and access to dining, shopping. Parking provided!
Staff
Quiet, comfortable with wonderful starf
The rooms are very dated. There are few outlets to charge your devices. No live TV service, only the streaming services you log into. My room overlooked a busy street and it was very loud throughout the night. There is a window over the room door that allows light from the hallway. It’s way too bright to sleep.
I had a wonderful stay at the Hotel St. Helena. A beautifully restored 1881 historic boutique hotel captures so much of Napa Valley’s classic charm and history. The proprietors couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful.
My room was cozy and comfortable, The hotel has just reopened after a closure for restoration; preserving its original glory while bringing it into the 21st century .
This location is right on Main Street in St. Helena, walking distance to great restaurants, boutique shops, and wine tasting rooms.
Other thoughtful touches include a small garden seating area and a vintage style bar serving local wines.
As an historic Napa Valley hotel with personality, prime location, and friendly hosts, the Hotel St. Helena is a solid and charming choice.
The hotelier Mary is a pure delight. Renovations are nearly complete and the hotel is a hidden European inspired gem. I will be back here every time I’m in Napa to enjoy our new friends.
We booked a room via Expedia early November for almost $700 for one night just to get a call from a number without caller ID asking us to cancel the stay as they were not allowed by the city to reopen (something was not according to regulation). We had to book an even more expensive room instead without refund from Hotel St. Helena. Nancy promised a full refund which we have yet to receive with all their phone numbers being out of service now and no response to emails. When we checked out the hotel in person it was all boarded up. This is a scam, do not book.
Do not book this hotel!! Do not use Booking.com . I booked this hotel through Booking.com. After I read the bad reviews, I decided to cancel. Called the hotel, manager NAncy told me the reviews were wrong, I would love it when I see the place. This is farther from the truth . I tried to cancel but the manager told booking.com, no refund. I can understand why they don’t give refund, as you would leave when you see the rooms. The linens are dirty. I was put in a room which had a sitting room, very dirty floor, with old furniture. Their employee, Robin is sweet and helpful. I spoke to another employee who she told me her name is Sandy only to find out from the house keeper that her real name is Nancy, the manager what a liar!! Pretending to be Sandy when she is the Nancy that I spoke to in June. They should close this hotel for ripping off customers. By the way they they advertise the room to have garden view??? You can see the garden when you’re looking at the window form your restroom. What a Joke!! For 300 / night, I would be glad to stay in motel 6. As a retired Colonel in the US army, I feel that it is my duty to warn people of this hotel. The pictures on the internet are deceiving. I would give this hotel -0.
I booked this hotel through booking.com. After seeing the negative reviews. I decided to cancel,I called the hotel to cancel. I spoke to Nancy, she states the reviews are wrong, that I would be very happy with the hotel . I arrived in the afternoon the room is dirty, wallpaper peeling off.stains in the bedsheets . I was told I cannot get a refund. Called booking.com, I was told that they spoke with the manager, the hotel does not issue refunds. Since I paid almost 1800 dollars for the 6 night stay. I stayed, we made a lemonade out of a lemon. Another employee who called herself “Sandy” is actually “Nancy” according to the housekeeper. I guess she did not want to be confronted with her lies. The only employee that tries to go a good job there is Robin. It may have been a historic hotel at one time, gone to the dogs. They could not pay me to stay there. Go to wydown, South Gate or harvest inn. By the way , they advertise the room as garden view, you can see the small garden from your toilet. This place is a joke!!
Booked at this hotel for a weekend stay to visit my daughter at CSI, Live in Reno. Snow in the forecast so I called hotel on Wednesday AM to cancel, Left message, called again Wednesday afternoon left message called Wednesday night left message, Called Thursday left message. Cancelled on-line. No one ever answers phone or called me back and they charged me 650.00 for not showing. Still no one answers phone to help, Just messages. Called Hotel.com to help me they said no worries you are ahead of the cancellation policy, Hotels.com emailed me and said sorry we cant get a refund for you???? This is robbery this place is getting reported. I would be very careful staying here as they rip you off. NO ONE IS EVER AT FRONT DESK! Complete RIP OFF, Calling BBB..
This hotel is a historic, boutique hotel with only 19 rooms. It's got a traditional walk-up staircase and no elevator so it's not going to work for someone who can't climb the steps. The furnishings and lobby decor take you back in time to the late 1800's, early 1900's and the staff hospitality was really appreciated. We enjoyed a continental breakfast before checking out and enjoyed our stay here. We walked from this hotel to the movie theater and shops and had a good experience in St. Helena.
Based upon the room rate I was expecting a wonderful boutique hotel. I was severely disappointed.
I was hoping for a room where I could relax in an elegant, welcoming, and private environment. I found a room that was about 10 feet square. Had one table light. I could only fine one electrical outlet, behind the bed. No closet. Only a small hat rack for clothes. A grand total of three coat hangers. And there was no control of the room temperature.
I was hoping for a room where we could sit in comfortable chairs and chat about our travels. I found a room with one straight back chair.
I was hoping for a room with privacy. I found a room where the noise from the hall intruded, where the noise from the adjacent rooms intruded, where the noise from the adjacent bathrooms intruded, and where the noise from outside intruded,
I was hoping for an elegant bathroom. I found a bathroom with the simplest of white fixtures. I found a bathroom with no counter space around a small wash basin. I found a bathroom with one towel rack and only two sets of very common towels. And I did not find the ubiquitous second roll of toilet issue! When I looked around I understood why: there was no place to store it!
I was hoping for a responsive and accommodating staff. I found a the staff was only available between 8am and 9pm. The housekeeping staff stopped us in the hall and asked if we would like fresh towels, We said of course, and asked for our sheets to be changed; she laughed and walked away. I would never use the word accommodating to describe the staff of the Hotel St. Helena.
My husband and I came to St Helena for a romantic weekend of wine tasting and great food !We made reservations at this “boutique “hotel right in the middle of town. I thought by paying over 400.00 a night it would have something to offer. It did not! Our room ,including the bathroom, was the size of our bathroom at home. The pillows stunk like an old mans head and the bed was so small! There was no way to control the temperature so we had to sleep on top of the covers. The TV was not much bigger than a lap top. The staff was unfriendly and the overall feel of this place leaves little to be desired! Don’t even waste your time at this Old,rundown hotel!
Cheerful greeting from the front desk and easy check-in. The bed was comfy and the shower was Great! Sure, it could use some updating and fix-its and everyplace in the area was a little pricey, but this hotel had a certain charm that felt good to me. Mary, the front desk person was sweet, recommended a very delicious restaurant, Cook, and it was right across the street! She remembered that I was going to a workshop in the morning and greeted me with an offer to take some breakfast items for my lunch. Very considerate and thoughtful!
We should have known when we set foot in the room. It was small, not much bigger than the bed. The bathroom too was tiny. Only one of us could get in it at a time. And all this for a 5 star price. Then the problems began. The wifi did not reach into our room. We had to go out to the common areas to use it. The bathroom sink leaked all over the floor. And perhaps most disturbing the cold water tap would occasionally produce scalding hot water; quite disconcerting if you happened to be in the shower. We of course brought these things to the attention of the front desk and a plumber did come and repair the leak. But nothing else changed. And my attempts to raise the issue of the high price for the low service were rebuffed. I will not stay there again and you shouldn't either. As a previous review stated outdated and overpriced.
This hotel was probably the place to stay at one time. But it has lost its appeal over the years. It is overpriced, not very clean and needs. Major refresh. The only positive is it’s convenient location . The reception staff are very pleasant. But the owners should either sell or invest but not continue to rip if customers
I have never written a review on a hotel, but I feel like it’s my duty to inform people of this place.
I will say that the location is amazing, super centralized, surrounded by amazing restaurants! That’s why we chose this hotel to begin with. We aren’t normally picky at all where we stay as long as it’s close to all the happenings.
But never again here.
First of all, they charged us twice for our stay, and it took us weeks to get it back.
Also, we ended up paying $200 more to upgrade our room, as we realized that our initial room had a communal bathroom, as in you had to share it with other rooms. We didn’t know that existed so never really looked into it. Be aware of that in case you do decide to go with this hotel.
There was never any staff to help us with things. We ran out of toilet paper and we had other questions – AND NOT A SOUL ON SITE. We didn’t even know where to leave the keys once we had to check out. We called their answering service and a guy advised to just leave the keys on the mat outside of the hotel. That just doesn’t seem safe.
Lastly, and most importantly, the place was sooo dirty. We were so grossed out and honestly we just tried to not think about it the whole entire time we were there. There was someone else’s old contact in the sink and some other particles, hair in the shower and on the tissue box, carpet was not vacuumed, and we are not quite sure if the sheets were clean, but can’t confirm for sure. One time, by some miracle, our bed ended up being made, which we were both very surprised about. Towels weren’t changed. It just felt very dirty and gross.
For the price this hotel costs, we definitely expected at least a clean place.
Once we got home I wanted to throw away everything that stayed in the hotel.
My adult daughter and I decided to plan a couple of nights in wine country during our San Francisco vacation. We rented a room at the st Helena based on a good recommendation we read in a lonely planet book. After reading some negative ratings by people on trip advisor I was scared! But this place turned out to be cleaned, well furnished, nice hot showers, friendly staff. I didn’t see any of he problems others mentioned in their trip advisor reviews. It almost makes you wonder if they were setting this place up for some reason. Anyway, I would definitely stay here again. It’s literally right in the middle of everything. Would recommend this hotel in spite of some other bad recommendations.
I booked this hotel for two night? On the day of our flight we we in an auto accident and had to cancel our reservations. This is the only hotel of the five we booked that charged us for cancellation. Not only do I have a totaled car, and my wife in hospital, I am being billed more that $700.00 for the two nights. So much for empathy. May the bad karma come back ten fold.
