We made the reservation on the saturday morning, well I thought that I had made the reservation for that same night but for some reason it was for 2 weeks away.
We travelled to the unique Dutch authentic island of Marken.
We were very well received by the owners despite that we didn't had any reservation for that day, upsy :)
The hotel is very cosy and clean.
Breakfast was high quality food and service.
A place to return that's for sure.
The hotel is a bit of a walk (well sign posted) from the out of village parking area but once you step in - warmth and a super welcome from the owners. It is a pity we could only stay one night! Do check out the walks on the dikes: birds, water and views. A great alternative to an impersonal big city hotel.
We went on a weekend trip without kids for once. I selected a quiet place (Marken) and a small local hotel. From the moment we arrived until we left, we were spoiled by the couple running the hotel. Very nice breakfast, clean rooms, spontaneous advice on where to go and what to do, where to go out to eat, etc.
We were made very welcome on our arrival by the owner Sarah, Although the room we had was a little tired around the edges it was all very clean .Downstairs there was a nice lounge / bar area where a lovely breakfast was served too you in the morning and by night it became a nice place to relax in and enjoy a few drinks .It was very clear to us that sarah takes pride in all that she does, She couldn’t do enough for us making it a pleasant stay .
The hotel was one of the best places we've ever been too. If you expect spacious rooms, wide corridors, convinient stairs, you won't get it. What you get, however, is
the unique Dutch atmosphere of the place with its cosy sofas, warm decor and charming climate. I should also add- delicious breakfasts:)The most important thing of all are the people who run the place, absolutely lovely and helpful. I really recommend the place to anyone who is looking for something more than just a place to sleep.
It was really nice, and will be even better with all the ideas the owner is going to implement. Super service and Sarah is a great host!
Spent time in numerous spots in the Netherlands and then made our way to Marken. We only had the opportunity to book a single night at Hof van Marken and that's the only regret we have. The room was nice, the hosts were great, and the town is a nice quite place to visit. (Note that we went off-season in October.) We are planning to go back, this time for a longer stay. You won't be disappointed. Go for the breakfast served at the hotel. Very nice indeed and a great start to the day.
Increíble lugar. Sarah excelente manager. No se pierdan el desayuno.
Gracias!
We booked in on a impulse because we thought Marken looked like a lovely small village with a huge history. The hospitality was awesome "Sarah & hubby "new owners of one month were very enthusiastic and we wish them well for the future because they are off to a great start.
Hof van Marken is a true haven away from the busyness of Amsterdam. It has old world charm combined with modern amenities and is only a very short walk to the picturesque harbour and four restaurants.
Our wonderful host Sarah made our three day stay extra special by organising amazing
outings and transportation to nearby attractions where we got to enjoy the natural beauty of the Netherlands. She created a worry-free experience so that our days in Marken became a highlight of our European vacation and we enjoyed the delicious breakfasts too.
The whole of Marken is amazing - especially in the evening and and early morning when it is all silent and magical. The best way to experience this is to stay at the Hof van Marken. A small and tremendously charming hotel. Relaxed and homey atmosphere. The host was very welcoming and the breakfast was superb.
We stayed at Hof Van Marken for a quiet three day break and were pleased with our choice. It's the only B&B in Marken, just up a side street from the harbour, about 35 minutes by the efficient half hourly 315 bus from Amsterdam Centraal. The hamlet is very pretty and peaceful, surrounded by farmland, and it takes just over 2 hours to walk the whole island by well-kept pathway. Our room (6) was small but adequate, with a window view over the roofs and lagoon; and the stairs to the rooms are steepish and not suitable for anyone with mobility problems although we managed OK (These factors were probably the same for most houses in Marken). The breakfasts at 10e were excellent value, although the hotel no longer offers evening meals presumably as most guests would want to eat on the harbourside (see my review of the excellent De Taanketel). The ferries to Volendam on the mainland are efficient, but Volendam itself couldn't be more of a contrast as it's tacky and unpleasantly touristy (avoid). Instead we passed through quickly, taking a bus to the lovely town of Edam which is worth a visit. Overall we had a very happy stay, and would thoroughly recommend this hotel and village for a short get away break that can easily be combined with daily trips to Amsterdam if need be. The hotel also has bikes for guests although we chose more leisurely walking.
Fabulous, but rather pricey. This hotel is in an old (large) converted Dutch property, set slightly back from the harbour. It is charming. Clean, comfortable with good space and nice views of roofscapes (or whatever). Note the bedroom walls are rather thin. Sadly, kettles are not provided in standard rooms. Breakfast is extra but is fabulous, fresh and generous. The owner very helpful
Sehr freundliche Gastgeber in einem touristischen, fast kitschigem und etwas überteuertem Dorf.
Cozy, comfortable and clean hotel. A little far from airport but it is still worth for a stay.
This is our second time staying at this little hotel and it’s wonderful as it was two years ago. Highly recommended and we’ll definitely come back
A charming hotel, lovely room with character and super nice host. Not to mention the fabulous breakfast ! Well situated for dog-walking too. Will definitely return!
Marken island was the half-way point of a 2 week cycle around The Netherlands. It was also a high-point: a fascinating place. The Hof van Marken turned out to be a splendid choice to spend the night. Friendly: an intriguing blend of timber and brick. We were comfortable, right in the roof-room. We needed the patron to move our gear up there. The staircase was steep even by dutch standards.
He gave us good advice later: what to see; where to eat (my review of the De Taanketel).
But most memorable was the breakfast. Fresh squeezed orange juice, just picked fruit (raspberries, strawberries, blue-berries, melon and so on); freshly made bread and croissants, strong ducth coffee - all delivered with enthusiasm. Certainly the best breakfast we ate on the holiday.
The bikes sped down the island causeway that morning, and on to the Waterlands and Amsterdam. We only needed a shared piece of apple-cake all day until dinner at 8 p.m. many kilometres south.
the hotel is an ancient dutch house.
The room we got was very small but cosy. Two beds.
Don't expect luxury but traditional housing a bit like going back in time.
The stairs to get to the room is very steep and with heavy luggage, it can be a bit hard.
The hotel is very very central (although Marken is very small) by the harbour
We had breakfast. Very good breakfast but very expensive.
