Rough road to get there. Dinner was not great, very poor value for price. Lovely ambiance. Beautiful courtyard. Loved dinner by the fireplace. Kind server. Do not recommend the eggplant!
Bathroom had loose ceiling tiles that seemed open to outside. Very humid smelling room. Nice big room but disappointing fire 180/night.
Wonder historic hotel with excellent staff.
If you want to live in a place that is frozen in 1920, this is your place. Reflects a plantation lifestyle. You could walk around the property and discover gems for days. We loved having dinner facing a fireplace each night. loved the room with its fireplace. Very much worth the stay for the experience alone.
Totally cool hotel dripping with history. Originally a 1700’s hacienda, you feel like ur staying in a museum. Good classic restaurant. Has its own chapel and alpacas. We stayed in the honeymoon suite - I felt like time traveler. A four seasons this is not. Great value if ur willing to put up with a few charming kinks!
A historic hotel with a ton of character but just needs to be renovated to bring back its grandeur. Great for photography
Amazing property, amazing staff.... be aware that the address on hotels.com is INCORRECT! we spent an hour looking for this hotel and realized the address was wrong. Be sure to email hotel and get an updated address. Other than that, incredible place to stay
Super hard working staff. Absolutely beautiful historical hacienda
Warm welcome, help with our motorbike luggage upstairs, beautiful quiet setting out of town in woods. Some staff spoke English which was very helpful. Enjoyed the garden courtyard and wandering the grounds to find llamas, pet rabbits, etc. Our spacious room was in the main building which was very traditional to the hacienda. Food was average but enjoyable. Overall a positive stay.
The place is incredible. It is a classic place which they don't make any more of. Rates in Ecuador are reasonable. Any where else this hotel would be really expensive. Nice for those of us who would like to enjoy a little luxury once in a while. Because of the season ,the day of the week (Monday ) and the fact that Cotapaxi has been closed to visitors the hotel was not busy so they have us a wonderful upgrade to a fabulous suite. They had our meals set up for us before we got to the dining room, and the food was good. However the thing that really made this a five star experience was that when we got to Quito and realized that we had forgotten our computer and left it in the lobby the manager brought it to us at out hotel in Quito. What a relief that was to get our computer back. I took so many pictures of the hotel and the grounds because it is so beautiful , but the personal attention is what really makes the hacienda so special.
While it is certainly and interesting looking place, I would not stay there again or recommend it. It would have been much cheaper and easier to do a Cotopaxi day trip from Quito. The hotel is super overpriced and antiquated. They don't have enough information about tours and the receptionist speaks no English. The food is good but pretty pricey. It is pretty cold and advertising free wifi when it only works in a 10ft area in a corridor is a joke.
-the hotel needs to upgrade their shower/bath facilities - currently hot water is hit or miss.
We booked this hotel after readings several positive reviews. The first problem we had was finding it. We took a bus from Quito and told the driver where we wanted to get off. He dropped us next to a dirt path, gesturing that it was right there.turns out La Cienega is actually a ten minute drive away, or for us, twenty minutes dragging our suitcases along a gravel and mud path in the pouring rain.
There is some confusion about the location amongst even the locals, so learn from us and just go the main bus area and take a taxi.
Now on to the hotel...we had a beautiful big room with a fireplace and exposed stone walls. Everything is quite dated, so while not unenjoyable, we noticed things like very creaky floors and squeaky beds. Otherwise the room was great.
We ate most meals at the hotel as the isolated location means there was nothing else around. The food was good, not great. Certainly for the prices as compared to the usual Ecuadoran meals, were quite high. US$8 for a salad is a bit steep....
My final comment is back to the location. It is misleading to state as La Cienega does, that it's at the foot of the Cotopaxi volcano. This maybe geographically true, but we read that the hotel is right inside the Cotopaxi national park. Not true. We travelled about 20 mins by car just to reach the park entrance.
Beautiful house in beautiful surroundings, well worth a stay if you are visiting the Cotopaxi Volcano.
