I booked 2 rooms and stayed with my family for 3 nights. Overall the stay was value for money especially the breakfast buffet. The inhouse Wink bar was neat with good array of drinks and bar food. The mutton chukka was exceptional. I would recommend hosting friends here and avoid the tacky and rediculously expensive Macaw pub nearby.
Probably my oversight I did not realise Vivanta is no longer under the Taj brand. I have stayed previously at Taj Clubhouse in chennai and probably spoilt by the higher standard. We arrived at the reception around 3pm but the checkin process was not completed until 5pm as they could not find one of the 2 rooms booked through booking.com. For 2 hours 2 families were cramped into one room and when eventually we got the keys to the second room the A/C was disfunctional. We were given an alternative room but not after a night of drama with no A/C.
The pool although of decent size is only 4 feet in depth and had small debris covering the whole floor. It was also crowded on sunday morning as I believe locals hire room for saturday night that includes the breakfast buffet and use of the pool which is a good deal but that means it was chaotic for regular guests as the buffet service was overwhelmed and so was the pool. Instead of enjoying a lazy sunday with laid back breakfast and swim we did musical chairs to get a table and did not get to enjoy the pool.
The hotel is far away from the city centre and it was the main reason to book Vivanta to stay away from traffic and crowd but OMR traffic is worse than city centre.
I had also booked a third room fully paid for a friend and cleared their dinner bills the following day with strict instructions not to take any sort of payment from them. Despite this they took payment from my friend and it was whole lot of hassle to get the money back when they checked out. Had they not told me the hotel would have heped themselves to double payment for the dinner. They assured the money will be credited back but I did not get a credit note or email or any sort of communication to follow up. Totally dishonest, unprofessional and sloppy.
Overall I would recommend Pullmans or Taj Clubhouse which is more or less within the same price range.
