The onsen was good and hot (but there was a tv playing in the outdoor Onsen, quite weird), the location was good. The breakfast was good compared to nicer hotels we stayed in. Good options for both Japanese and western style breakfast. The staff was helpful when we needed them, overall the place worked for a very busy time of year (snow festival) but was really just a mediocre hotel.

Cons:

The lobby smelled horribly of cleaner (or perfume?) and cigarettes making coming and going very unpleasant. Beds were uncomfortable and soft. The window in our room was up against a wall, within a few feet, giving the already small room a very claustrophobic feel. There were no obvious stars to use, and when I asked I was told by one staff member there were no stairs to use. The most off putting thing was the smell in the lobby, but they did have corn soup in the lobby one day for guests which was very nice to walk into from the cold and snow.
