Comfortable rooms
I am basing this review on the price paid and in that respect the photo on Hotels.com is flattering to say the least. The room was fine but the rest of the place was really tatty.
It is very tired and certainly substantially over priced. Of all the hotels we have stayed in this was by far the most disappointing.

A gem in Thurso. The staff was great and the hotel itself was a great experience. Spacious rooms and a beautiful setting
The ladies who served breakfast were absolutely fantastic, super friendly and efficient. Unfortunately we were horrified by the appalling service on arrival, after an extremely long drive we were met by a grumpy member of staff who closed the bar 45 minutes earlier than advertised . This was a a trip we were most looking forward to, after visiting several times before, we found the hotel run down, poorly maintained and lacking in cleanliness in several areas.
The location was absolutely beautiful and we loved the hiking trails around the property. Unfortunately, the food was not good and there were very little options for a vegetarian. The sautéed mushrooms were limp and greasy. The carpets in the main house were dirty and had holes in them. The floor in the granary cottage made your feet dirty after a shower and we found a snack wrapper from a previous guest under the coffee table in the living room area of our cottage leading us to question the housekeeping standards. We had to kill thirteen spiders when we arrived and seven the next day. I k ow it’s the country, but proper dusting and some mint oil would go a long way in terms of pest abatement and management.
Amazing property. Would love to go again!
The granary suite was beautiful and had a wonderful view of the waterfall from every window
Beautiful hotel, comfortable rooms, great staff! Definitely the best we stayed at om the NC500, and a highlight of the trip.
Food is ambitious, but has room to improve.
We stayed in the Miller’s Cottage 2 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Wonderful dining for dinner and breakfast in the Forss House dining room. A lovely stop for us on our NC500 road trip!
Loved the mill house we stayed in. The main house is a beautiful old place. The service was lacking waited at the bar for a half hour before someone arrived, his bartending skills and personality needs some improvement.
Our bedrooms were excellent.. recently modernised… the main hotel was ok service hit and miss but perhaps a skeleton crew as just after NewYear… had to request for the fires to be lit and the lighting was not good resulting in no ambiance…however the food was excellent..
Fabulous
Lovely warm comfy room.
This is my forth time here and as always it was outstanding. The room service and food all excellent, coupled with the surrounding just make this the perfect Scottish experience. Staff are lovely and very helpful, the food is of a Michelin standard and worth every pound.
We stayed one night then returned several nights later as was very happy with our first stay. Lovely property, good service & food. More suitable for adults in our opinion.
Nearest thing to staying in a castle for us! Delightful evening with dinner and lovely conversation with other guests. Extensive whiskey list & wines to match a 3 course meal. Stayed in the fishing lodge as there are rooms in the house as well as detached lodges. Very comfortable and charming.
You feel relaxed as soon as you arrive
The best part of our trip so far. Nick was great - helping correct a lack of reservation information from expedia. Beautiful place. Would certainly stay there again. Nice restaurant.
This property is very unique. The food and services are excellent. The walking around the property is very picturesque.
Highly recommend.
