Mixed reports: several guests praised overall cleanliness, but specific room issues were noted (hair in blankets, unclean area behind the toilet) so cleanliness is below the property's other strengths.
Service

Generally strong service in bar and restaurant (bartender singled out), helpful housekeeping and some friendly desk clerks; however, inconsistent front-desk interactions and a serious check-in/reservation failure were reported — overall service is good but uneven.
Location
9.5
Consistently praised: historic, central location in walkable Douglas with attractive lobby, rooftop and patio areas — location is a clear high point.

9.3
Very positive: bartender and bar staff praised, dining room popular with locals and guests; F&B offerings and service are standout features.

There was no stay, had to get a different hotel, after we drove over 300 miles to get there.
Pros:

We arrived on April 23 2026 around 1;00 and was told they didn't have us booked. We showed them our paper work and verification JYUK3Q and they said they didn't have a room for us.

Cons:

We didn't like they didn't have our reservation.

Pros:

The history of the property is really special, and I loved the unique details throughout the hotel. The lobby area was beautiful, and the rooftop was especially nice—it was a great spot to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Cons:

We had a mixed experience during our stay. Unfortunately, cleanliness was an issue, there was an area behind the toilet that had not been cleaned, and we found hair in the blankets stored in the closet. I understand that some wear and staining can happen across properties, but basic cleanliness is very important.

The service also varied. The two young ladies at the front desk were quite short with us and didn’t come across as welcoming, which impacted our overall experience. However, the older woman who assisted us during checkout was very kind and pleasant, and we appreciated her hospitality.

This hotel has such a rich history and charm, and with improved attention to cleanliness and more consistent customer service, it could truly provide a much better guest experience.

We loved it and will be back!
Pros:

The attention and retention to the details of an Historic Hotel. Beautifully cared for.
The bar was wonderful as was the bartender.

Cons:

The only thing was the bed was just a bit too soft.

Clean, comfortable and friendly stay at a classic hotel
Pros:

I always enjoy staying here. It's a clean and reasonably well-maintained old hotel. Douglas is a friendly and very walkable town, and the hotel is in the heart of it. The desk clerks and cleaning people are attentive and friendly. The bar and restaurant staff go out of their way. I appreciated the complimentary k-cup coffee machine in the hall, for a decent cup of coffee whenever. The wifi is fast and reliable. There are so many places to spend time in the hotel other than the room: There's a great patio with plenty of shaded seating and tables overlooking Douglas' main street. There's a beautiful and welcoming lobby with plenty of seating. The bar has a tap room feel and it's just as popular with locals as guests. The dining room is also obviously popular with locals. The Gadsen is an all-around great value.

Cons:

This is minor, but tap water in the hotel tastes like what you would expect from an old building. It would have been great if the hotel provided options other than the small, wasteful bottles of water available at the desk. Maybe provide a gallon of water in the rooms, make gallon bottles of water available for purchase, or place a water cooler in the hall?

Clean, comfortable, friendly
Pros:

I always enjoy staying at the Gadsen. Clean, comfortable and friendly stay in a reasonably well maintained classic hotel in the heart of walkable Douglas. Desk, cleaning, bar and restaurant staff all go the extra mile.

Cons:

The tap water tastes as you'd expect from an old building. Bring a gallon of water if you don't want to buy small bottles at the desk.

Nice place-VERY EXPENSIVE, desperately needs a plumber!!
Pros:

Beautiful surroundings-Marble and hardwood everywhere! Much interesting history! Shower KNOB WAS STRIPPED, and had been that way for some time! Phone to the desk would not work so had to get dressed and go downstairs to speak to anyone! Water would NOT WARM UP (ice cold) for as long as 20 minutes of steady running!

Cons:

I liked the old building charm and the old elevator Couldn’t give any r enumeration because it was booked through Bookings!? I questioned that!??

Tolles Hotel in schlechtem Zustand
Pros:
