Snugged away
Pros:

This is my second time at this hotel. The location is in Zona Colonial but snugged away into a quite corner. This is an older building but modern conveniences. I am happy to return.

Perfect location in the colonial zone
Pros:

Hotel Portes 9 is a delightful boutique hotel. The evening desk clerk, Marvin, connected us with a tour guide, enabling us to have a delightful, informative tour of Santo Domingo. Walking the entire colonial zone from Portes 9 is easy. Its a safe neighborhood and Portes 9 is located on a beautiful, small plaza. The room was spacious. Breakfast was amazing consisting of eggs cooked to order (omelet or fried) with fresh fruit. Immerse yourself in the Santo Domingo culture and stay at Hotel Portes 9.

Terrible hotel don't stay here
Pros:

When my husband and I first arrived they tell us that we can't use the AC because they were fixing something with the light. So that was very aggravating since it was so hot. Then around 7pm the lights go completely off, we had to run outside to see what was wrong and they us the same story. Breakfast was terrible they served moffins and cereal and that's about it. Would not stay here even for free.

Best value in Santo Domingo
Pros:

This hotel is small but very clean and well appointed. The rooms and hotel are tastefully decorated. The water is hot and the AC is cold. It is in the safest and most interesting part of Santo Domingo. You can always count on a comfortable and safe stay here.

Nice and simple, perfect location
Pros:

very friendly staff, very good breakfast.
We stayed in room number 1 which was just up the stairs. You could hear everything from the front desk, or the rooms nearby...every time someone is opening or closing a door. The room was fine, quite old, but clean.
Bed wasn't very comfortable. There was one hanger in the closet. I asked for more, but never got any.
Front desk people were helpful, helped planning the day. Definitely worth the price.

Intimate, perfect location, friendly staff.
Pros:

The Hotel Portes is a small hotel in a quiet corner of the Colonial Zone. It fronts
a small park, and, because it is not directly on the street, has no through-traffic
which makes it quiet. It feels a little bit removed from the main tourist area, even
though it is just three blocks from the main Cathedral and the Parque Colon; the
location is really terrific.

I found the staff extremely friendly and helpful. It helps to speak some Spanish,
of course. Breakfast is cooked to order, which is nice; I asked for, and received,
extra towels; wifi was strong and consistent. In short, it is a really solid place
to stay.

If you do stay there, please keep your expectations reasonable; the Dominican
Republic is still a Third-World country, so if you want the Hilton, go there instead.

My room safe was not big enough to fit my laptop; the electricity failed twice during
my stay; my shower had only hot (!) water, no cold; my toilet did not always refill so
I flushed it with a bucket of water; the bathroom door did not fit the opening so
privacy would have been impossible.

If little annoyances like these are going to wreck your day, choose another hotel.
But if you like the idea of a quiet little gem, perfectly located and staffed with
friendly people, give this one a try.

I wouldn't stay again
Pros:

The included breakfast is good. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of restaurants, art galleries and the Zona Colonial. Our room needed repairs. The wood trim entering the bathroom was disconnected. The curtains and rods fell down when I tried to open the curtains. We never had enough towels and had to ask for more all three nights. The facility is clean.

Boutique Hotel in Zona Colonial
Pros:

Nice little boutique hotel in the heart of Zona Colonial. Close to everything (bars, restaurants, sites). They have around 8 rooms. All different in size but with private bathroom, A/C, safe and minibar. WI FI service in all property. The staff personnel is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is eggs (sunny side, scramble or omelet) with ham and chesses. Cereals, coffee, juice and a plate of local fruits. The room is well illuminated (at least #6) and very spacious. The bed is comfortable.

Great hotel, dicey area
Pros:

The hotel itself was a good value. I traveled as a single female to Santo Domingo, and I would not recommend staying in this are. I did not feel entirely safe outside of the hotel.

Very noisy and could not sleep.
Pros:

The hotel's location is within walking distance from the main zona colonial attraction. Our driver could not find it and it took us a while driving around to find the hotel. The room itself was nice and spacious but we did not get any sleep due to the noise from outside. It is so noisy with people drinking outside that it is impossible to get any sleep at all. The staff was friendly. It is a cute hotel if you do not intend on sleeping much.

Cold Water Ritz
Pros:

I choose this hotel based on reviews and on price. Even though I paid for four nights I left after spending one night. As I enter my senior years I want a shower with warm water. I know it is the tropics. So What. I also expect the shower to drain. How much is a can of draino?

The staff was friendly. The breakfast was good. The location was not bad for the historical district. Still, I would recommend spending a little more for a better hotel.

This hotel is best for young people and European tourists. The only body odor I unfortunately encountered was not from the locals.
