Professional property host/manager
My staying was Absolutely wonderful. The property is beautiful and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend if you're looking for a nice and quiet stay.
Beautiful garden and pool, excellent host . Simple, rustic rooms and nice breakfast.
I liked having nature around me and its fulfilling breathtaking beauty. The owners/staff are very friendly and understanding; beautiful people. It was a pleasure to meet them. Hearing a river flowing and the tranquil sounds of a waterfall on the property; amazing to both fall asleep to and awaken to. Hummingbirds to admire, a swimming pool, soccer field, volley ball, a kids playground for families with younger ones, a walking path, hammocks, and breakfast provided. I had my own car and speak Spanish, so I enjoyed everything I wanted to do and see on my stay. Some good things to see were mentioned by the owners/staff. Positive energy. I did not have any dislikes.
Beautiful place to stay, calm, relaxing. Love the place. See you next year.
Beautiful
Excelente!!
You want to see coffee plantations, subtropical climate, and ruins from the earlier times? Sumak Pakari has it all and even more. Behind the big gate awaits you a pool, restaurant and private rooms with many necessities.
Sumak Pakari offers first-class treatment with a neat ambient all around it. A football and a volleyball field are located just as you walk through a lush field of flowers you might not have seen before. The landscaping has a comforting atmosphere including palm trees, a small succulent garden, and other subtropical flowers.
The private suits include a jacuzzi, flatscreens, and internet. Right behind the hotel, a trailhead starts that will give you the first peaks of the subtropical nature. For a longer walk, you can walk through the coffee plantations to las Toalas from the main road. Additionally, Tulip is a site of the ruins of the Yumbo peoples. This tribe came to the Sacred Valley of Tulipe around 800 BCE leaving behind an interesting collection of archaeological remains. If that is not yet enough to disconnect from the busy streets in Quito, maybe you want to grab one of the bikes provided by Sumak Pakari and go for a bike ride.
As you come back from your hike, you can take a quick jump in a nice clean pool back at the hotel, after that just dry off and get ready for the local specialties offered in the restaurant.
Lastly, Tulipe offers everything you need, with a few restaurants, a shop and bus service it can even be reached by public transport. Already the drive by itself makes this visit unforgettable.
Very friendly staff, tasty food. It seems like a hung-out place for Ecuadorians from Quito. Beautiful landscape and jungle around. Quiet and lonely not like hippies Mindo but close enough to the sights. You need a rental car to get around. Nice experience. Rooms in lodge type. Not much comfort but nice and clean.
Beside the 1 hour tour to the museum, there is nothing else to do specially evening/nigth. No restaurant service, very cold water pool, not sauna, no turco, not jacuzzi, at 6 pm no restaurant service at the place, the 2 restaurants in town closed we end dinning cookies with juice. Poor wifi service, no pool, pingpong table, entertain room, nothing to do. Facilities are all rigth, conftable room, but with all cabins empty besides ours and other, they asigned us next to the other, not thinking about guest confort. Much to work on, very booring.
Everything was fine
Welcoming feeling, good room and beautiful premises with a paradise garden, also with orchids. Monday, Tuesday are resting days, although they did receive us and another family. But the kitchen was a bit limited. Worst of all, the La Tulipe archeological site was closed on these days. Even in high season. It seems that since the government took over the administration, it is hard to get things done.
Si bien las instalaciones son comodas y muy bonitas. El mayor atractivo son los alerededores donde hay un limpio rio, un museo y un pueblito muy pintoresco.
Room and surroundings were very nice. We had a massage which was mostly reflexology and great. The only thing we did not like was that breakfast is served from 8:30 A.M., which is a bit late for us, other than that, we highly recommend this place.
I booked this lodge in November and arrived in march. Expedia did not inform them of my arrival (pre-payed ) All the staff do not speak English .I had to call my previous hotel for a translator .I showed them my conformation . They were
booked out ,but made a room available to me for 3 lovely days. This is a very isolated area , a national park .Tulipe
is a small town of maybe 50 people on a cobble road . What a peaceful place. they have historical dig sites all over the hills. a small museum ,botanical garden too. The tiny village has a few cafes as well as the lodge . It's a hard place to find but worth it.The current phone number as of 11/2014 did not work , email via Expedia.com
The water is safe after 2 days we got a translator ,they use bottled .Food safe too , enjoy the tilapia, shimp with garlic and don't forget the Ecuadorian beer Pilsner.
On a whim, I left Quito via bus and arrived in Tulipe in the late afternoon. I had seen the Hosteria at the end of the road a year earlier and looked forward to staying there for a few nights while studying the Tulipe site and petroglyphs. I walked to the end of the road, crossed the bridge and came to a closed gate to the parking area/entrance. I rang the bell and no one answered. After about ten minutes, I asked a neighbor, and she said that they were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Luckily I found lodging at the other end of town, as there were no more buses leaving Tulipe until the next day!
I'm sure it's a lovely place, and it's my loss that it was closed.
This place is clean has a nice pool and grounds. The rooms are large cottages that sleep four with a queen and bunk bed arrangement. Easy to spend the day hanging out, and is more of a resort than a place for birders if that's why you're in the area. The hotel is also hard to find and is about 5 miles off the main road to Mindo down a road that is being worked on but has a lot of bad driving sections. Also, we got overbooked for the second night, so we decided to leave as it was raining anyway, but it was a real hassle dealing with the Spanish speaking manager and the Expedia to get a proper refund credit. If Mindo bird watching is your intent, this place is too far away for a dawn excursion, but it's a good place for relaxing if you have a car.
We chose to stay at this hotel over Christmas as a nice treat to ourselves over the holiday. We figured that we could get massages and enjoy the relaxation and see the town and museums.
Unfortunately, in a booking mix up our travel agency (booked it on points using Amex) booked the room on dates that the hotel was scheduled to be closed.
The hotel accepted our reservation anyway and didn't tell us that the place was going to be completely desolate. We figured that out on our first day there... I think one staff member was kept on site specifically for us,, so no massages and barely any food for us during our 3 day stay.. Even everything in town was closed. Bummer.
But, I don't want it to sound like it was a terrible experience. The grounds were very beautiful and it was a (forced) extra relaxing stay. The hotel staff person, when present, was very friendly.
Our final thoughts on this place:
1. Careful booking in Christmas. Call and confirm that the hotel will be open with staff and other guests.
2. Grounds are beautiful and very relaxing.
3. Town is safe and also quite beautiful. Go for a hike while you are there.
4. We felt it a bit pricey, but also maybe we are bitter that we used so many points for what was essentially a closed hotel. If everything would have been open, then the price would have been worth it - I think.
Hosteria Sumak Pakari is literally next door to the best YUMBO archaeological site in South America. There are also great hikes to see YUMBO petroglyphs beside beautiful river pools. You can easily spend a week trekking around the area based at Sumak Pakari with it's lovely swimming pool and peaceful & lovely gardens. If you don't speak Spanish I suggest you get Stefan (shoffmann@hosteriasumakpakari.com) to organise some trips in advance. The Cloud Forest is stunning and reputedly has more tree species than the Rain Forest at the lower altitudes in the Ecuadorian Orient, lots of birds & butterflys as well.
