We saw this hotel being built a number of years ago. We commented on the number of river front balconies. How nice it would be to have a 180-degree view.
We stayed 2 days at this Homewood Suites in July. This was our second time. Once again, my wife let me know she did not like how the bathroom is situated. The washbasin is actually separated from the shower/toilet area. I call it the “1940’s hotel design bathroom.” She likes her privacy.
All of the staff are pleasant and friendly. The breakfast crew especially go out of their way to greet you “good morning.”
Our balcony room was only a 90-degree view. On the Homewood Suites website there is no delineation between “direct” riverfront vs. partial riverfront. I thought my Platinum American Express card would get us an upgrade. It did not.
The room is indeed large. Maybe twice as large as an ordinary hotel room. We did find the room to be clean. There is a very large refrigerator in the kitchen and a couch in the attached living room.
We find the large modern TV to have streaming services. Our beds, for the most part, were comfortable. There are plenty of outlets for your digital devices.
We did use our balcony—which did look at other balconies. As we were just one floor down from the bar area, my wife did hear music during the night. From the balcony, we did see one beautiful sunrise and several cargo ships on the Savannah River.
There is a dedicated rooftop bar and swimming pool for guests only. We have always met people at this bar. The bartenders are indeed friendly. The pool is usually filled with children. The views over the Savannah River are mixed with industrial buildings and cargo ships that pass by at irregular times.
The bar does serve snacks. If you are wanting dinner, they recommend going to the Marriott hotel next store and try their “sister” restaurant known as Lavender.
There is a bit of a “walk” to Savannah’s famous commercial riverfront. We recommend walking along the riverfront boardwalk as the East Bay Street Road along Homewood Suites is a bit convoluted.
You may have trouble unloading your stuff as the driveway has room for one car. There were cars waiting in the middle of the road to unload.
Parking is expensive. $40 a night for self-parking, $50 for valet. Two weeks before we paid $16 for a public garage in downtown.
The garage is diagonally across the street. We decided to self-park. On the first day I completely missed the sign to register online with your phone. There are elaborate instructions on registering your vehicle and paying online. You can’t get out of the garage if you don’t do the online registration.
On our departure day, someone in front of us did not register their vehicle. We waited at least 15 minutes until someone came to help this person. Some hotels at other garages we know actually have a keycard to access and depart a garage.
The breakfast items are your typical “Hampton style” breakfast. The eggs are tasteless and the breads mostly white and unhealthy. There should be at least two different offerings of meats. Not everyone likes sausage, ham, bacon or kielbasa. The coffee is doable.
The breakfast area is jammed with tables. Tables were no more than 6 to 8 inches apart. There is no personal space here. You are more than likely be seating next to a crying baby, a belching person or a flatulating teenager.
The architect(s) that made this hotel should be relieved of their duties. There is a grand foyer, but a small space to unload and load your car. The breakfast area could have been created far larger than it is.
Paying a premium price for a direct rive front balcony room and not getting it; having a bathroom where the Mrs. complains; the small loading area; the jammed back breakfast area and the expensive garage; and there are hotels cheaper in downtown: I just don’t think we will ever be back at this Homewood Suites.
By and large, walking the numerous tree laden squares and visiting Forsyth Fountain never gets old. We loved our lunch at Six Pence Pub and enjoyed a cup of coffee at The Gallery Espresso.

We came to Savannah to celebrate our 50th Anniversary and Homewood Suites helped make it special. Special kudos to the breakfast staff of Spring (she’s awesome!), Tashall, Havol and Morgan. Also the Concierge, Mark, was friendly and super helpful. Great visit - thanks!
