It was a great stay for the entire family. The rooms were beautiful. The service was very good and Cape May itself is very special.
Was in a pinch to find a hotel last minute (a month before) for a late wedding invite. First of all, most of the "affordable" Cape May area hotels and Air BB are overpriced trash. Dated old rooms in poor condition that have not been updated since the 80's, beaten up by non-stop tourists/kids. Hard to find an affordable place in the summer season- talking to a few people it is a combination of summer tourists, weddings, Coast Guard graduations every week, and apparently, the only beach people from PA and NJ go to. Saw the room photos for La Mer and they looked to be better, more updated (wood floors, newer furniture, etc.) than the other hotels that still had vacancies. I was not looking for a beach front property, just needed to be close to our venue. Made a reservation over the phone and asked for the lowest price available room. This was around $700 a night. Bit the bullet and took the room based on the photos and reviews. Total garbage. Not the same room with the wood floor you see highlighted on their website. This is the most I have ever paid for a hotel room in over 30 years of hotel stays and I feel completely ripped off. One of the most high priced/low value rooms I have ever had. Micro tubes of soap and shampoo, cheap toilet paper (didn't even get a box of tissue until the second day). NOT EVEN A COMPLIMENTARY BOTTLE OF WATER in the room. $700 a night? I have been treated better at a $160 night hotel. Obviously you are paying to be across the street from the beach with an included beach pass but that's where it ends. The room was a king bed with a pull out couch. It felt like I walked into an Embassy Suites in 1998. Dated colors and mismatched decor. Carpet. LOUD air conditioning unit, glaring red balcony lights you can't turn off that flood the room unless you close the privacy curtain. Bright white LED or CFL bulbs in the fixtures giving off harsh light. LOUD mini-fridge. Dated fiberglass one piece shower/tub combo with a curtain. Horrible low water pressure. The thermostat was actually an old mercury dial manual style- not even a digital thermostat. Obviously La Mer is just ripping profit off the "Beach front" location and NOT putting it into these low end rooms. Total rip-off. Front desk staff was also rude/bothered by us during check-in, not cheerful or welcoming.
Now, let me complain about some things I know La Mer has no control over, but really made my stay here the cherry on top: small pool filled with LOUD kids and adults from 8am until 10pm (or whenever it closes) that you can hear up in the rooms. Paper thin walls so you hear every door on the floor slam, every person walking down the hall AND people from NJ who feel it necessary to talk at full NJ volume from 10PM to Midnight with no regard for people trying to sleep. Three different groups, both nights, all some variation of: "Will you cawl me in the mawning? Yeah? You gonna cawl me? Okaay, Yeeeah, just cawl or text me and we can get cawfee. Whaaaaat? Yeeeah, Okaaaaay. HA HA HA HA, Yeah. I knooooowww!". The best part was night #1 (I am NOT making this up) we were woken up at midnight to what sounded like a porn movie being filmed in the hallway. It was so loud I thought someone left their door open or they were actually having $#% in the hallway. I opened the door to discover it was the room across the hall. My wife described it as "performative moaning". Can't make this up. So yeah, $700 a night to feel like I was at a Motel 6. Never again. I have stayed at beachfront hotels in Hawaii, California and all over Florida for less than half the price with more room amenities, perks and better conditions. It is criminal what they charge in Cape May and what people are willing to pay to stay in this area. No idea why, but I guess people are okay with it.
La Mer was exactly what we were looking for! The rooms were airy, clean, spacious, and comfortable. I got such good sleep on their mattresses! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is perfectly situated right across the street from the beach. I would definitely stay here again.
It was our first time staying at La Mer. We were there for our anniversary. You won't find a more accommodating group of people then at La Mer. The entire staff from the people working at the pool to the guys taking care of the property to the staff on the beach to the bartenders to everyone at the front desk, especially Lisa , were all so friendly and professional. The room and the property were immaculate and the view from our room was spectacular. Its not hard to have a great view and great time in Cape May but its the crew that will keep you coming back to La Mer!
Beautifully maintained hotel with great beach access and a nice pool. The staff are very friendly and attentive especially the dining staff and the beach staff who will set up chairs and umbrellas on the beach for you. There is a very good restaurant which will serve you on the beach and poolside. Overall a great experience with the exception of the noise from early morning garbage collection and food deliveries as we were located over the service entrance to the restaurant.
Beautiful property
$1,000 a night should buy an experience — not a series of disappointments.
One thing upfront: the staff were gracious, attentive, and genuinely trying their best. None of what follows is on them. These are failures of property executives looking at profit vs experience.
The room: Advertised as "ocean view" at over $1,000/night. We received the last room on a side street wing, with a theoretical glimpse of water somewhere behind a dense wall of bushes. That's not an ocean view. That's false advertising. And sleep? Nearly impossible the air conditioning unit sounded like a diesel generator firing up every time it cycled on. Each kick-in jolted us awake through the night. A $1,000/night room should not have equipment that belongs in a construction site. I saw more folks complaining about AC in the lobby.
The restaurant: A wedding had taken over the better half of the property, the modern dining space, the outdoor terrace, the oceanfront areas. Paying hotel guests were confined to a dark, dated back room for every single meal. No warning, no compensation, no explanation beyond a shrug.
The pool: Disgracefully overcrowded, whether from wedding overflow or just poor capacity management, and completely unusable.
Bike rentals: A coastal hotel at this price point should have bikes on property. Instead, there's a third-party arrangement with an off-site vendor requiring a phone call and a 30-minute digital setup process just to maybe rent a bike. Inexcusable.
The layout: To get from the lobby to the pool, restaurant, or beach, guests must walk through the parking lot. A fundamental design flaw that undermines any sense of a cohesive, premium experience.
The location is beautiful and the staff genuinely care. But at $1,000+ a night, guests deserve what's advertised, uninterrupted sleep, access to what they're paying for, and a property that functions as a unified whole. This fell short on every count.
First time going to Cape May and we had a great time.
Hotel was very clean and modern. We had an ocean front king room and it was perfect.
It overlooked the pool and had the best view of the ocean and cabanas.
Room was a great size, with a small kitchenette, which came in handy.
Staff was very attentive, our coffee machine broke and new one was sent right away.
We loved the location because it gave a more private feel.
It’s not in the mix of all the hotels, but still walking distance to everything.
The onsite restaurant The Pier House has amazing food and staff.
If you love deviled eggs, theirs are the best.
It was my husband’s birthday, we had balloons delivered. We also ordered some extras for the room
The staff did a great job setting everything up.
Parking is great, so many spots and most are under the hotel. So car stays cool on hot days.
Awesome breakfast and location
We spent 3 full days at La Mer. Love the location, the restaurant and bar (incl: happy hour). Hotel is run well with a friendly staff. The pool is also a lovely private spot to relax. The rooms are clean and comfortable. My only major complaint is with the furniture: patios have two wicker type chairs which are quite uncomfortable. Inside the room there’s a table and two totally uncomfortable chairs (too narrow and will only fit your butt if you’re less than 150#). The room is a good size and has a totally empty corner that screams for a big comfortable lounge chair but unfortunately there isn’t one there..
When you’re hanging out in the room your only shot at being comfortable is to lay on the bed. If they fix the furniture and go for comfort they get 5 stars.
I liked the condo. It was quiet the 1st night. Clean. Good amount of space. Good location.
Jack hammers at 8am. No screen for balcony. Mosquitoes. Spotty wifi. Spin class with loud music ar 8am. Disposable coffee cups would have been nice too.
Hotel parties throughout the entire night, staff was not concerned at all, everything we asked for was a hard NO without even trying to make things work…
Clean and up to date
