This place was just perfect for me during my stay in Santo Domingo.
Certainly, not the level of quality you'd find at a more corporate hotel. The bathroom and the shower were not great. Nothing special about the room.
However, the staff were courteous and attentive to my needs. Hotel worker was in the lobby 24/7. Maid cleaned the room daily. No one bothered me and I could come and go as I pleased and I felt pretty comfortable and secure there (used a safe that was provided by hotel for my important personal items). Pretty laissez-fair if you catch my drift. They have food, but I didn't have any so I couldn't remark upon that. However, they did have some drinks and that was helpful.
From the beginning to the end of my stay, there were absolutely no problems whatsoever with the hotel. Only bummer was the riff-raff hanging near the hotel, but it's not really the hotels fault, they're just people trying to hustle the neighborhood. Definitely a bit annoying considering they don't get the hint when you tell them to get lost.
Restaurant up the street was really good and you are in close proximity to the Colonial Zone.
This hotel stay ranks at the top of my list of hotels from hell. I should have left after the first night, but I didn't. I feel foolish, but have learned a lesson: Never, never, ever base where you stay ( Dominican Republic) on a few reviews, that are skewed toward the favorable (this includes those PR photos of the place). It's next to some sort of bottled water dispensing business. So, of course it's noisy throughout the day. I had the misfortune of having a room (#9) next to the a/c fan of the bldg. It ran 24/7, sounded like a single engine prop airplane.
Here's something else: when I first arrived, the desk clerk had no record of the "intent to stay" declaration I had made 2 months prior. He then proceeded to take me to a ground level room at the far end of the building that looked like something you'd expect to see drug addicts shooting up in (though IDK whether the addicts would like it). I couldn't believe it. After telling him in broken Spanish I did NOT like the room, he took me to the other.
The next room was a little better, by a small margin. I wouldn't call it a bed, more like a rack, something you would expect in a spare room. Hey, you get the picture. Old hotel, old neighborhood, old furniture.
The "continental" breakfast one morning consisted of a ham and cheese sandwich... I didn't try it again (stayed 4 days).
Stayed here for one night in the 2 bedroom suite. The hotel is located near the ocean and casinos, which is ultra convenient. The downstairs bar is legit, cheap large beers for $2
The room was decent, but the air-conditioning was not working. They fixed it right away. The bed was horrible though, one of the worst I've ever slept in. Couch was pretty nasty looking but I did not sit on it.
