Comfortable, and brilliant staff
Pros:

Staff were fantastic, room was clean and tidy, facilities were great

Cons:

Only problem was that our room was very hot but staff had provided three fans to try to help which was great, nothing that could have been done to prevent it as our stay was during a heatwave

Come for the décor, stay for the sauna experience you didn’t ask for.
Pros:

The building is pretty.

Cons:

The hotel looks great but our second floor room doubled as a tropical climate simulation chamber. We booked knowing that there is no aircon but the weather was forecast at 25C maximum – how hot could a room get? The answer, it didn’t fall below 30C according to my watch. Being on the top floor and with only a tiny window, sleep was less "luxury hotel" and more "survival challenge." The fans provided just didn’t make a difference.
On night two, a hotel function with loud music until 11pm forced us to keep the window closed and kept the room even hotter. No chance to move to a different room, the staff gave us a tray of ice for under the fan, but otherwise sympathy from the night manager was next to zero with comments like “How do you think I sleep in the daytime heat” and that “the partygoers paid a lot of money". Those comments didn’t cool things down!
A beautiful hotel hugely let down by a room that is unfit for sleeping in warm weather. The hotel should know better than to sell rooms that get so hot – we can’t be the first to experience this. Half a star for the décor, and half because the room was hot enough that I didn't need to pay extra for a spa treatment. P.S. £16 for a continental breakfast of that quality? Not twice…

Potential to be an amazing hotel
Pros:

The character of the building.
Comfortable bed.

Cons:

The rooms are very tired and in need of some TLC. Our room needed a deep clean and some attention to detail with the cleaning.
Staff were not always available and customer service was not a priority. They didn’t show any passion or interest.

Abysmal Avoid
Pros:

The bed was comfy and the staff were friendly.

Cons:

Where do I start.
The grounds are unkept full of weeds, the flowers and grass are dead and the fountains are green and smell terrible. It wasn't pleasant to sit outside despite the weather. The entire place has fallen into disrepair.
The decor is tired and shabby, paintwork cracked and what has been updated is cheap modern tat in what probably once was a gorgeous historical building.
We stopped in the best room the lord Byron suit. The windows don't open so it's stifling hot, the quilt doesn't fit the bed and the linen is stained with yellow patches, the valance doesn't fit and is stained with what looks like bodily fluid. The window shutters don't shut properly to block light. The TV is tiny so you can't see it properly from the bed or sofa and the amenities are abysmal. The bath is stained the place is dirty.Toilet roll is cheapest of the cheap, toiletries I wouldn't dare put on my skin. All improvements that have been attempted are cheaply done and it shows and fetches the place down.
The photos used on booking.com and trip advisor are clearly out of date or photoshopped and I havnt a clue who has written glowing reviews.are they in the same place?
The food is over priced and terrible, steak was tough and the desserts were still frozen and store bought. £40 for 2 courses so £80 for 2 people is robbery and a risk to health. We were in bed by 8am and are leaving first thing we will not be returning.
AVOID!!
