Received a call in my room from reception at 8.40pm on Monday 24th advising I had been given the wrong room.
When I originally booked online I asked if I could have a firm bed due to my back issues. When I asked Ayla person at the front desk about my request, Ayla said all the beds were the same, then she said she would get me towels to lay on the bed under the sheets that this would help. Not sure where she got that from but I tried it anyway and it didn't work. Thankfully the phone call resolved my worst fears of how I was going to sleep that night. Paris from the front desk apologised for the inconvenience she came up with the trolley and helped me move to the room with the firm bed. Paris was extremely helpful and apologetic. You need more staff like her at the front desk of the Distinction Hotel Dunedin Paris has a welcoming smile and shows empathy. When I saw Paris at the front desk the following day it was lovely to see her and her lovely smile. Told my family of 70 who were also booked in the hotel of how fortunate I had been to have someone like Paris to acknowledge the mistake and resolve it. They were also very appreciative of Paris's support.
When my family and I arrived there were 70 of us coming off the bus and car rental. Totally understand that so many people at one time would have been a little overwhelming for some of the staff . I'm assuming this is why front desk person Ayla smile did not reach her eyes. Since she didn't look at the notes for the booking first and said all beds were the same,

Absolutely excellent breakfast. Nothing missing from what was offered in the buffet. So many extras.
Easy walk to the Octagon and activities nearby.
The location is great with short walks to the town centre and the waterfront. The room was large and the shower and bed were excellent. Staff were very friendly and efficient- typical Kiwi friendliness at reception.
