The buffet breakfast was amazing. The location and seeing the red squirrels.
I have stayed in a couple of hotels before but this was the first time I booked it myself.
There were several nice welcoming emails sent to me during the week before my arrival, which I appreciated.
Good breakfast and dinner options. Food presentation was great.
Room was clean and tidy. Basic amenities all there including kettle, tea, coffee, milk pods, sugar and sweetener. This was important to me as I am a heavy tea/coffee drinker but not a fan of espresso machines.
Staff were welcoming and polite. Made me comfortable and looked after in general.
I stayed during August and coming off the M6, the surrounding areas to the hotel had carpets of purple heather. It was a lovely sight and I stopped to take photographs.
The immediate surroundings to the hotel was nice too. There is a little stream and a pocket of woods just outside, which makes for a nice walk in the morning. Apparently, there are rare red squirrels too but I did not see at the time.
Floors sound creaky in many places but I didn't mind this. I was at the 2nd floor and access was not stair free, since lift only reaches some areas.
Please paint on the car park the areas where parking isn't preferred like the coach turning areas / access ways. Feeling comfortable about parking is very important to me when travelling.
I had made a second booking to extend my stay for another night well before my arrival. At the time of booking, I was told that I wouldn't need to check out after the first night since it was the same room. This wasn't the case during my stay and I was asked to check out after the first night, as the receptionist wasn't sure which room I'd be in for the second night. It turned out to be exactly the same room. It would've been nice if they made a bit more effort to coordinate this internally to avoid the unnecessary checkout in the middle.
There was a constant sound if I opened the window, similar to those from a boiler room. I noticed it was turned down during late night.
Beautiful old hotel in a lovely wooded glen. Gorgeous food.
A little bit dirty in corridors, needed a dust and cleaning of glass doors and hoover. Tired dated decor
The hotel is a popular stopover for travellers heading to Scotland, and it is well equipped to handle a steady flow of guests. The staff mentioned that some days see as many as five tour buses arriving, so they are no strangers to managing larger groups and quick turnarounds efficiently. Despite its popularity, the hotel retains an authentic and characterful atmosphere, with traditional hunting portraits and antler displays adorning the walls. Set in a stunning location with beautiful views, it offers direct access to woodland trails where red squirrels can often be spotted, although unfortunately we were not lucky enough to see one during our visit. After a long day of travel, the hearty and satisfying evening meal was a welcome end to the day
There were a few things however, I feel should be pointed out as constructive feedback.
- The postcode provided in the Booking app takes you very close to the hotel. However, with only a few hundred metres remaining, we encountered a road closure caused by a gated access point. It appears this has been introduced by local residents to reduce traffic from cars and tour buses. While an alternative route to the hotel is available, it added approximately 20 minutes to our journey. It would have been helpful to receive advance notice of this restriction, along with clearer directions to the alternative access route
- The lock on the door of our room (Room 96) was not functioning during our stay. Given the hotel's remote location, we never felt particularly concerned about security, and we did not expect any issues overnight. However, it would have been reassuring to be able to lock the door, particularly as we were staying in the Old Bath House, which is situated away from the main hotel building. Ensuring the lock is repaired would help provide added peace of mind for future guests.
- The kitchen closes at 8PM. We arrived at 7:25PM and were lucky to have food. Again this is useful to know upfront, especially when travelling with young and hungry kids.
- The mattresses are in need of replamcement. I could feel and hear the springs move with every turn.
- We had 1 toilet roll in the bathroom that was almost gone. No extra ones to be found.
- The TV didn't work and the WIFI was so weak that my phone could not connect (4G works fine though)
- The staff was friendly but they felt disconnected, complacent. The reception and check-out felt transactional.
De sfeer van het hotel
Kamer naast een binnendeur. Veel lawaai telkens er iemand binnen of buiten gaat.
Location is superb and it was reasonably priced
The bins on one of our rooms hadn’t been emptied when we arrived. There were women’s sanitary products in the bin and broken reading glasses on the floor. In the dining room we witnessed a waiter picking up several uneaten bread rolls off a guests table after they left and put them back into the bread basket. Then proceeded to offer them to another table unbeknown to them. This will probably follow why they only have a 2 star food hygiene rating
A beautiful location and really enjoyed some of the older features of the hotel. Staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.
The mattress was too soft and springy for my liking - prefer a firmer one. There were also a few cobwebs in the room.
The hotel was very charming with an elegant vintage style, which I loved. It was out of the way but also close to the motorway, without the noise of the traffic, which was great!
The only thing I would say about the property is the parking. There were enough spaces, although there was no structure to how or where people parked, especially when there’s a coach party there. If the spaces were marked out and with signs of where not to park, I believe it would be more practical for everyone.
A fantastic stay . Will definitely be coming back
Awful driveway, pot holed
No toilet brush
Very good thankyou
Super easy check-in, and the hotel was full of character! Plenty of parking, and the beds were really comfortable. Great to be able to sleep 3 adults in a room, all in proper beds.
Aircon and/or a fan would have been great, as it was quite a warm night.
Staff very friendly and location
Excellent location for walking and exploring nearby trails and woodland
Bathroom improvements and better quality and variety for breakfast food
