The views out our window of the river were beautiful. We got a pizza and sat in the chairs by the river and enjoyed the sunset. The bed was very comfortable, the staff friendly and linens were good quality.
The door handle would not lock and is in need of repair. No dining facilities on site but several good options within 15 min drive.
Arrived late, unfortunately… Office was closed but staff communicated that the room was open and key inside. Pro: Friendly and accommodating staff, Beds were insanely comfortable, room was spotless… Con: A/C was loud, and Wifi nonexistent, as was anyone of cell service. No restaurant on premises as of Aug 2026. Overall a great stay, only wished it was for longer than a night.
Aircon loud, no wifi service, no cell network… no restaurant.
Beautiful stay along the water. Had fire pits going in the back. The room was nicely furnished and the kids loved the bunk beds. Would stay here again. In middle of renovation so it will be neat to see once done.
It didnt have a breakfast offering. Not a huge deal but our family tends to like the warm breakfast at hotel before heading out on road. If we were staying for a longer period we would have loved to hit up the shops and food places along the way.
Clean rooms that were under construction and the large hole in the side of the facility where they were also performing construction
The fact that booking referred, this is a higher place to stay, and we had no hot water, tried to get comped, but since we were third-party, they would not comp anything back
Location, the backyard by the river, close to downtown
The room has not been made which is not acceptable. The room itself is quite dark and furnished with dated furniture. The Wi-Fi is very unreliable, which is especially frustrating since the hotel is located in an area with little to no cellular coverage, making a stable internet connection essential.
Convenient location. Beautiful setting. Very comfortable rooms and beds.
No staff at checkout before 8A
Great location in town and on the river
Going through renovations while we were there.
Good location within walking distance to central Woodstock. Grocery market across the street and a couple restaurants very nearby.
Room was very nicely appointed, and we especially enjoyed the rocking chairs on the balcony outside our room. Rooms in the rear have a lovely view of the river and there is nice outdoor seating.
The location was wonderful. The lobby is being redone but the woman in the office room let us know about a number of restaurants we could walk to, and we had a great dinner locally. The view was great. The room was spacious. There was coffee in the morning for my daughter who was happy about that.
I would love to have a breakfast on the site. We ate at Mon Vert and it was good and cute and walking distance. For the money even a continental breakfast would be good. We hauled our luggage up the stairs due to no elevator but luckily my daughter helped me. Otherwise, it was very good.
This place looks a little like a motel, but it is much better and the comfort was excellent
No breakfast on site
The possibility to get a breakfast on site would be great
The hotel is close to the historic section of Woodstock and there is a grocery store across the street. Our room was clean and spacious with two Queen beds. We had a patio and a great view of the river below. There were several fire pits on the property and we had a beautiful evening to enjoy ours. The service was great. There was some minor construction going on but it didn’t interfere with our stay I would recommend this property
The rooms were nice. Location was great. You could walk to town easily.
They were in the middle of a renovation, so many amenities were not available, such as coffee. The office wasn't always staffed, so there was not someone there to answer questions.
The Shire was one of 6 small hotels/inns we stayed at during our Vermont vacation. We were hopeful that the Shire would be a hidden gem in spite of the reviews to the contrary. There is tons of potential! Unfortunately, during our stay there was just too much to overlook and most of the areas of concern were controllable. This review represents our honest assessment and we were hoping for more given the value and location within Woodstock. In summary, our stay was a mixed bag.
Pros:
-Location and walkable to Billings Farm, shops, restaurants, and market across the street; no need to drive
-Views of the river are stunning and peaceful
-Rocking chairs on the balcony (good quality and comfortable)
-Sitting area within room
-Fireplace in room (modern and works well)
-Value - cost compared to other properties in Woodstock
-Coffee supplies in common areas (k-cup)
-Fire pits down by the river
-Newspapers and games like UNO
- BeeKind products
Cons:
-Lack of cleanliness in room and on balcony (it smelled of cleaning supplies upon entry but using Lysol wipes picking up dirt indicated otherwise).
-Refrigerator in room was dirty, not wiped down.
-There was a used food container (with food stuck on it from who knows when) lid under a chair (indicating that furniture is not moved during cleaning/vacuum)
-Furniture on balcony was filthy
-Spider webs all over balcony with dead bugs (dozen or more)
-One hanger in the closer (?)
-Torn carpet
- Bathroom is outdated
-Need for paint to fix knicks and cracks
-Lack of attention to detail
-Ongoing construction will ensue throughout slow renovation disrupting current guests
- Bed was slouchy and uncomfortable
- As others have noted the small details like single ply toilet paper make guests feel like they are sacrificing quality to pay a good price.
Recommendation: conduct a quality check for housekeeping with an attention to details; some touch up paint and temporary fix is needed prior to full renovation OR a warning that rooms are not ready for showtime)
