I’ve been coming to The Funny Lion every year for the past four years as part of my work as a survival instructor, bringing clients to a nearby remote island. After each trip, we stay here—and every single time, it’s been exceptional.

The staff are incredibly warm, attentive, and consistently go above and beyond to make sure everyone feels welcome and well taken care of. Their level of service truly stands out.

The rooms are comfortable and beautifully maintained, and the facilities are excellent. The food is always fantastic as well—exactly what you want after a demanding trip.

What makes it even more special is that they remember me each year, which adds such a personal touch to every stay.

It’s the perfect way to end every course I run here in the Philippines, and without a doubt, it’s one of my favourite hotels in the world.

The Funny Lion was the perfect place to come home to after multiple days out in the sun! The staff was so friendly and accommodating. The space was so peaceful and clean.

We stumbled upon The Funny Lion almost by accident — every hotel in Coron proper was booked when we were planning our stay before embarking on a Tao expedition from Coron to El Nido. What started as a backup plan turned into one of the most memorable lodging experiences of our lives. Spoiler: I will never stay anywhere else in Coron again.

The Property
From the moment you arrive, The Funny Lion feels less like a hotel and more like a private resort tucked into a lush, secluded world of its own. Two spectacular pools, a rooftop Jacuzzi with sweeping views, and an on-site spa — the grounds are genuinely stunning. For a boutique property with only 32 rooms, it punches so far above its weight class it’s almost unfair to the competition.

The Food (Yes, Really)
Let me be upfront: we fully intended to venture into Coron for dinner both nights. We never made it. Not because we couldn’t — but because the food here is that good. On our first night, jet-lagged and tired, we wandered into the Mexican restaurant expecting something decent. What we got were legitimately some of the best tacos we’ve ever had — anywhere. My wife was thrilled with the thoughtful vegetarian options, and I demolished every seafood and meat taco I could get my hands on. The rooftop bar adds a fun bonus after 5pm: brick oven pizza, local beers, and cocktails under the open sky. The morning buffet breakfast was equally impressive — a beautifully diverse spread covering all the Western favorites alongside Philippine and Chinese breakfast options I was genuinely excited to explore. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and lovingly prepared.
The Staff — The Real Stars of the Show
In a word: extraordinary. From the moment we introduced ourselves, every single team member addressed us by name — Mr. Andrew, Mrs. [name] — for the entirety of our stay. At a 32-room property, that level of personalized attention is remarkable. The team was warm, kind, and attentive in the best possible way — always present when you needed them, never hovering when you didn’t. They arranged transportation for our Tao orientation meeting without any fuss, handled laundry with a ~24-hour turnaround — clean, folded, and pressed — at a price that would make your jaw drop compared to a US laundromat. The front desk was consistently helpful whether we stopped by in person or called from the room. This is the kind of service that leaves an impression long after you’ve checked out.

The Spa — The Surprise That Stole the Show

We had no idea there were massage services on-site when we booked. Learning about them during our welcome tour was one of those happy travel surprises you don’t forget. The Funny Lion offers five styles of massage — from traditional Swedish/oil to reflexology — at prices that are roughly 20% of what you’d pay in the US (and notably more affordable than what we experienced at our Manila hotel). We booked a couples massage for that same evening, and both masseuses checked in immediately about pressure preferences. I like deep tissue intensity; my wife prefers something gentle. Both were perfectly responsive and attuned throughout. We walked out completely refreshed — and walked straight to the front desk to book again for the next day. Tipping is not requested or implied in any way, but at these prices and with this quality, we were genuinely delighted to tip, and our masseuses were so gracious and appreciative.

The Location — A Happy Accident Worth Seeking Out

About 8–10 minutes from the heart of Coron, The Funny Lion sits in a pocket of calm that feels worlds away from the noise and bustle of downtown. Honestly? It’s better out here. The resort provides free bikes, and upscale e-trikes and traditional trikes are available moments away whenever you want to explore. Knowing what I know now, I would actively avoid booking in Coron city proper and come straight back here. The seclusion, the quiet, the safari-chic atmosphere — it all adds up to something genuinely special.

The Verdict
The Funny Lion is a 10/10 in every category that matters: property, food, staff, spa, value, and soul. Whether you’re passing through Coron between islands or making it a destination unto itself, book this place without hesitation. We went in with zero expectations and left completely in love. We’ll be back.

I had a really great stay at Funny Lion in Coron. The staff were incredibly friendly and hospitable, and I appreciated how they remembered my name - it made the experience feel more personal.

I also liked the thoughtful touches, like the small drawstring goodie bag and the sweet treat left in the room.

The breakfast was also enjoyable. While the selection wasn’t huge, it had all the essentials, and everything was well-prepared and tasty. The staff in the dining area were very attentive and made sure everything was taken care of.

What stood out the most was how helpful everyone was. They assisted with arranging airport transport and even checked my flight details to make sure I had enough time—small things like that really made the stay stress-free.

The room itself was excellent—very spacious, clean, and the bed was super comfortable. The rooftop view was also amazing, perfect for relaxing and taking in the scenery.

Overall, it was a wonderful stay, and I’d definitely recommend Funny Lion to anyone visiting Coron.

Had an amazing time at The Funny Lion, we had a Tana suite which had its own plunge pool. The room was very spacious and the bathroom was beautiful, it had the best shower and great water pressure. Cute turn-down service each night ❤️
Staff were so friendly and always ready to help.
Pool area was nice and set in the mangroves and only a little smell.
The Mexican restaurant was my husbands favourite and the best margaritas he's had.

I previously stayed at The Funny Lion - El Nido, and couldn’t wait to try out their sister hotel in Coron, as the El Nido branch was fab.

The Funny Lion - Coron didn’t disappoint, in fact, it exceeded my expectations!

Everything in the hotel is perfect: The friendly and kind staff (who greet you by first name!), food (the breakfast buffet is probably the best hotel breakfast I’ve had) and facilities (I loved the pool, Mexican restaurant and rooftop deck w/ jacuzzi).

I also loved all the small touches and surprises throughout our stay - from the popsicles handed out at the pool area, to the daily turndown service and surprise bracelet/anklet/necklace making on Easter Sunday.

To summarise, I thoroughly enjoyed our stay, would highly recommend The Funny Lion - Coron to other travellers, and I cannot wait to come back again one day.

We stayed at the funny lion in Coron for 5 nights for our honeymoon. From the first moment we welcomed with big smiles. The resort has everything you need - amazing restaurants, comfortable bed, relaxing massages, refreshing pools and a cool rooftop bar where we spent every evening before dinner. A highlight was the Easter dinner by the pool where they transformed the pool area into a beautiful dinning experience. We can’t wait to come back!

5 starts all around, facilities, staff, all 3 different restaurants had amazing food, amazing swimming pools and the best sunset rooftop bar.

We have stayed 1 night at the Funny Lion after arriving in Coron and will be returning again for 3 nights in 5 days time. The hotel has a comfortable room and a beautiful pool and sunset sky terrace. They also arrange for transfer from and to the airport.

Great little resort! I didn’t get pictures but the seafood buffet on Weds and Sats was outside by the pool with beautiful atmosphere and relaxing live music. Rooms were clean and cozy. Staff super friendly and helpful. Rooftop bar had a pretty view, delicious cocktails, and surprisingly amazing pizza! I would stay hear again for sure.
