Fabulous food
Road noise
A beautiful boutique hotel with incredibly kind and attentive staff. The food was excellent, and the rooms are lovely with stunning views. One of the most special experiences during our stay was releasing the newborn baby turtles into the sea. It was truly magical and heartwarming to see how much care the hotel puts into protecting these animals and helping the turtles safely reach the ocean. We had a wonderful stay and would absolutely recommend this place.
Everything was just great.
Located on one of the nicest spots on the south coast, with quiet, clean sandy beach and turquoise waters. Spacious clean and modern rooms. Very well trained, professional and friendly staff. Fabulous pool for swimming lengths. Great menu and delicious food in the open kitchen restaurant. We were fortunate to see a turtle laying eggs on the beach and also releasing some newly turtle babies in the evenings. Highly recommended.
We thought hard and could not pick a single fault.
The amenities were excellent as was the food. Our room was very spacious and clean. Huge bedroom and bathroom Good location away from the hustle and bustle
It’s been a month since our stay at Lantern Boutique Hotel and while my rating on departure would have been 4.5, I can no longer rate it as highly. It was a last minute booking, as we were originally booked into a hotel in the heart of Marissa. We could not have been more glad that we moved down the coast, after we took a tuktuk into town. The density of hotels, the hawkers on the beach and the surfer/backpacker vibe wasn’t what we wanted, so we congratulated ourselves on our decision as we returned to the Lantern.
The hotel is located on a beautiful, secluded stretch of beach, without a lot of people and none of the frenetic energy found in Mirissa. It has 6 rooms, each overlooking the pool, with the beach and the ocean beckoning beyond. Its day beds provide some shade, tranquility and the view, but why are there only 3 and not one per room? Making the guests jockey for prime spots is something that is not necessary, especially when there is space for additional day beds. Behind the day beds, there is a bar, but it’s not staffed, nor does the staff go around periodically to see if you’d like anything to eat or drink. This absence of service, despite having lots of staff standing around in the kitchen/dining room, is a significant shortcoming.
The dining room is open air and overlooks the pool. Breakfast is included, and the fresh fruit juice and plates of fruit were nice, but once again, the level of service was wanting. We stayed at the hotel for 5 days, and were served by the same staff each day. And yet our preferences (coffee for me, tea for my wife, butter for the pastries, etc.) felt like things we shouldn’t have to repeat every day. There was no “personal touch”, and no coming over to ask about a coffee refill, more water, or anything.
We ate dinner at the restaurant all but one night, and our opinion definitely went downhill each night. We had hoped to have the opportunity to enjoy local specialties, and indeed, Sri Lanka has some amazing cuisine, but after a crab curry special on the first night (which was just OK), other Daily Specials included Chicken Quesadilla, Four Cheese Pizza, etc. The service was basic, the menu and specials uninspired, and the cost for what you’re getting, very high.
We had no basis for comparison in Sri Lanka, but after staying at Buckingham Place (near Tangalle) for the second half of our stay in the country, The Lantern paled in comparison, despite being significantly more expensive. The difference lay not in the location, both are located on beautiful, secluded stretches of beach, but in the level of staff training and service.
The Lantern Boutique has the potential to be great. The location, property, and rooms are all great. They would be well served by bringing in a real hotelier to observe and train the staff to make it a really special place to stay. For us, in comparison and hindsight, it was only just meh.
Beach location - very friendly staff.
N/A - the stay was perfect!

Another scam that uses booking.com scam? It happens more often in this area
The beach location is beautiful and peaceful. The suite was very clean and comfortable. Very luxurious feel. Great bed.
The common area around the pool is a little tired. The restaurant was a bit average although the service was good. We ended up walking up the beach to Zephyr restaurant which is fantastic.
We loved it hear so much! Best hotel during our stay in Sri Lanka. Great location to chill after traveling the country. Good kitchen. We absolutely loved the staff - especially Ajith. He showed some really good skills and made the difference during our stay! Private beach was nice, we enjoyed the pool. Also a good stay with a small child.
It’s a little noisy because of the road and the early breakfast. But we weren’t too bothered with it.
Very beautiful hotel and very kind staff the best hotel in Sri Lanka
The staff were lovely and very accomodating
Location is a bit of a distance from Marissa
