Residence Inn by Marriott Rapid City

If this had been my first stay at a Marriott it would have been my last. I travel a lot an Marriott has been my go-to brand for a while. I know I can expect nice, clean rooms, friendly service, and a comfortable stay. I am generally not very picky or one to complain but this stay was something else.

We picked this hotel because of the location for a multi-day visit to explore the sites around the Black Hills. We were greeted by friendly staff upon check in and the first night was fine. The room is definitely showing wear but given it is a family hotel near a water park we weren’t surprised and given the nature of our stay we’re fine with the room.

When we showered the next morning the poor bathroom design resulted in a lot of water pooling on the bathroom floor. The bath mat was sopping wet and we needed to use some washcloths as well to mop up the water. Then, I was searching for a safe and discovered that the previous guest had left behind a bunch of clothes. Since housekeeping staff hadn’t discovered them we wondered how well the room had been cleaned…. Yuck! They don’t generally provide housekeeping service for short stays unless you specifically request it the night before but we out the items in a laundry bag and brought them to the front desk and requested a more thorough cleaning (which they did do). On our third day the guests next door changed. We arrived back to the room after a long day of exploring and intended to rest for a bit before dinner. The new guests in the room next door have dogs, who barked nonstop for 1-1/2 hours. As we were headed to dinner we expressed our concern for the dogs (and the noise) to the front desk and were told there was nothing that could be done (so much for Marriott‘s pet policy), and were not sympathetic to the impact of the situation on multiple guests since you could hear the barking a long way down the hall. Thankfully when we got back from dinner the barking had stopped. The crowning jewel was that I was reaching for the makeup removal towelette the provide and inadvertently brushed my hand against the corner of the mirror. Should not have been a big deal except there was a large chip out of the mirror which resulted in a pretty long cut on my hand.

Overall, the property is well located and the free breakfast is nice. The rooms are standard Residence Inn layout and comfortable. Most of the staff were really nice. Beyond that, this hotel is in need of maintenance and better quality control on housekeeping. I would personally not stay here again.

That it was close to the water park for the grandchildren.

Drove 12 hours and arrived to find dirty pillow case on the bed, I got a new pillowcase and convinced myself it was just the pillowcase because I was exhausted. Couldn’t sleep, the linens just didn’t feel clean. The mattress was very soft. The room smelled like someone had been smoking in there. Got all new linens the next morning and the difference was obvious. The shower has no door so the floor got soaking wet in the bathroom. Also in the bathroom the overflow drain for the sink was filthy, especially obvious in the mirror reflection. It needs to be cleaned and a little bleach before it begins to really smell bad. Dropped something on the floor and got a view under the bed, it needed to be cleaned under there, someone’s deodorant stick was under there. Breakfast was just average. The apple juice didn’t taste right, maybe the machine needs to be cleaned. At breakfast they had the condiments for the oatmeal on a shelf and I wish they would put the nuts on the bottom so they don’t fall into the other options - this becomes a problem for us with nut allergies. The location was good, just off I-90. It’s next to a water park so great for families. The guest laundry area was big and clean. The front desk staff were nice and polite.

Residence Inns always have a fridge/freezer which we enjoy. It's clean and rooms are spacious. Right off the interstate with restaurants and shopping nearby. Hot breakfast included.

Comfortable beds

We had such a blast staying in this hotel again for the second time! We love the set up of the suites with our families and that they have a full kitchen! Easy access to the pool and pool passes included. Everything was very clean and they had great customer service!

The location. Also the Corridor to Watiki. Comfortable beds. Blackout curtains.
