We choose this otel for its location close to city center and beach.
Our stay was a significant disappointment that fell far short of the five-star standards we expected.
Room 123 was particularly problematic; its proximity to the kitchen exhaust resulted in poor air quality and a persistent odor of fish-and-chips. The interior was equally subpar, featuring an uncomfortably hard bed and an outdated bathroom that lacked any sense of luxury or modernization.
The breakfast experience was similarly frustrating. The hotel’s policy of charging a £3 supplement for basic items like eggs felt like "nickel-and-diming," which is unacceptable for a 5 star hotel. Furthermore, despite numerous vacant tables with sea views, we were 'offered' a table in the back and in front of the kitchen entrance.
To conclude, the service was entirely impersonal. Checkout was handled with utter indifference, as the staff failed to offer even a basic inquiry into our experience. Ultimately, this hotel lacks the refinement and hospitality culture necessary to justify its 5-star rating. We expected a level of comfort and professionalism that simply wasn’t delivered.
A 3 night break for a big birthday, perfect size hotel for us, not too large. Staff helpful and friendly, food delicious. Our room overlooked the sea, road not too busy with traffic noise, lots of joggers and walkers. Pool area was lovely, a decent size, and warm water.
Most things. We were upgraded to a sea view. Excellent pool and gym. Nice bar, good location. Felt secure with good car park.
Very little to dislike. Brend Hotels have such good standards. Only thing really to mention was the lady on reception wasn't the friendliest and tended to ignore and not make eye contact. She didn't say hi or good morning for example. That's not "normal" for a Brend hotel.
I had a really lovely couple of nights at the Royal Duchy Hotel. The location is perfect, right by the sea, and it was so nice to be able to step out for fresh air and coastal walks.
I especially enjoyed the spa, which was peaceful and relaxing (I even had it to myself at one point!).
The hotel itself has a calm, comfortable feel and was a great place to unwind.
What really stood out though was the staff. Everyone was so friendly and helpful – from the porter who made sure I stayed warm and comfortable, to the cheerful waitress who really brightened my stay, and the night manager who kindly helped me out when my charger failed!
There was a small hiccup with breakfast service, but it didn’t take away from what was otherwise a really enjoyable stay.
Overall, a lovely experience and I would happily return.
Already thinking about my next visit!
Locals visiting for special birthday dinner. Sadly very disappointing potato starter and steak for supper. Definitely not fine dining.
But friendly staff, lovely dining room and stunning views .
Lovely hotel, well maintained , great position by the sea & a short walk into the town. Friendly staff - recommended.
My wife and I are a group organisers and took our group to the Royal Dutchy by coach. This is a very nice clean and well appointed hotel with one or two problems for groups. First the restaurant service was slow ans sometimes painfully slow. Prior to our holiday we had difficulty in getting feedback on available table sizes which makes it difficult for a group organiser to allocate tables so that friends sit together in groups of 4 or 6.Then some of our members wanted to stay in the hotel in the daytime and use the lounge but found all of the sea view tables reserved for locals coming in for coffee. Rooms were comfortable and well furnished but some lacked space with some of our members having difficulty in putting suitcases out of the way. The room i had was nice with a sea view but the bed was lumpy and uncomfortable depending on how you lay in bed. Others of our party complained a nowhere to put stuff in the bathroom. I heard various comments about the food some good some not so good but i had no problems with food other than the lack of vegetables which were listed as an extra for an additional £5, though i believe that the charge was not actually ever made for those who ordered extra..
Overall it is a really nice hotel and is clean and comfortable but for groups it still has a lot to learn, nothing that a little training will not put right.
We have just got home from our weekend away at The Royal Duchy, we have left feeling very relaxed and very well fed! All the staff were so lovely and accommodating. We are a couple in our early 20s and would definitely recommend/go back!
All in all a very good hotel, but the provision of Dinner in the restaurant was hit and miss.
Service was very slow, it seeming to take an age to take our orders and to be served with the food. The staff seemed to be out of their depth in what was a relatively quiet period.
Whilst the quality of the food was very good, the menu choices lacked variety. During our 4 night stay, Fish & Chips and Sirloin Steak were on the menu every night. Of the 3 or 4 other choices, there was quite a bit of repetition in the offerings: you do not expect to see the same choices twice in 4 nights. Starters and Desserts were also recycled during our short stay.
Wow !! We arrived for a 2 night stay to celebrate my retirement. On arrival we were upgraded to the Armada Suite … absolutely amazing and really appreciated. We’ve stayed a number of times (lovely standard double rooms before ..including their ‘Twixmas’ package) … always brilliant.
A hotel with lovely lounges, pool area, restaurant with great food… but any hotel is only as good as its staff … who at The Royal Duchy are fabulous… thank you to all of you, on behalf of my wife and myself, for making my retirement celebration such a wonderful experience … we live in Truro and regularly visit for a morning cappuccino.. which we will continue to do … but already looking forward to staying at this wonderful hotel again …. 11/10 … !!!
The food needs a little refinement, The menu hss notchanged since iue last stay. The Duchy is a top class hotel and expectations from guests are high
My wife and I visited for a five day break. This is a Brend Hotel. The Brend Collection has recently been awarded AA Small Hotel of the Year 2025/2026. On the basis of this visit, it is easy to see why. The room was most comfortable and well appointed, the breakfast was hearty and the dinners were of a very high quality; the scallops, hake and steaks were particularly good. The service was absolutely excellent, provided by a first class team.
I have never stayed at the hotel, although it does look lovely. I came with some friends for afternoon tea and was very disappointed with sandwich selection. Only salmon sandwich and cucumber sandwiches on offer. I’m a vegetarian but will occasionally eat fish which was a god send really as I would have only had cucumber sandwiches to eat! Which were very dry. Other places I have been too would do a selection, egg, cheese, meat, prawn. So I was surprised with the sandwiches on offer, but the little cakes were lovely.
The Royal Duchy offers high levels of service and great food in the dining room and light-filled conservatory with great sea views. We stayed in a spacious inland room with large comfy bed and room to relax. Pool area very inviting - especially the hot ceramic beds! Would recommend.
We have stayed here several times over many years and eaten here on numerous family occasions. Whilst everything about this hotel has remained first class sadly we found that the standard of the food has gone right down.
The restaurant is classed as fine dining but the food we were recently served was anything but. Sunday lunch saw all the food just piled in a big heap onto the one plate and smothered in a thick gravy. This was never the case in the past with well presented attractive individual vegetables and gravy dishes.
We had a similar disappointment at a later evening dinner. A fish dish tasting of ammonia garnished with inedible glazed spring onions and a linguine dish covered in a gloop devoid of any garnishing. Neither dish looked appetising or in any way attractive and appealing. Whilst the Crème Brulee had a good crust the underneath was runny.
So very disappointing compared to the many meals we have eaten here in the past when the plates of food were beautifully presented very attractive to the eye and always delicious.
Breakfast was varied and delicious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a good view over the sea, even though the weather wasn’t perfect
Weather. Distance into town to walk
The staff were polite, friendly and very efficient from the warm welcome of the doorman to the cheerful breakfast team. Location is excellent for the view over the bay and beach but a fairly long hike if you wish walk to the harbour area. The decor and cleanliness of all the public areas is well above par and a credit to the maintenance/cleaning staff.
Only ate breakfast which was well prepared and presented by a very efficient team
Not keen on showers over a bath, noise transference between rooms an issue and floor boards are very squeaky in both the bedroom and the corridors
