A Mixed Opinion
Pros:

This was our third visit to The King's Head. It was the first time we left with mixed opinions whereas our previous stays were exceptional.

The big plus is the location of the hotel. In addition, it neatly balances the old and traditional with modern conveniences such as a Nespresso machine, in-room air conditioning and a fridge.

We had a major hiccup at the beginning of our stay as we were given the wrong room - we had pre-paid for a junior suite, the same that we had booked/stayed in previously. The room we entered into was a classic standard room, which did not have a view apart from into somebody else’s room. It was also much smaller and missing a fridge.

I went down to reception to discuss and within ten minutes the hero of our stay, a helpful chap called "Madalin" arrived at our room and upgraded us to a suite free of charge to rectify the situation.

The upgraded room was very nice, huge and designed more for families. It had historical character with high oak-beam ceilings, although the sloping walls were low so I had to ensure I ducked them throughout our stay and to be careful not to let my water slide off of the bedside tables, due to the sloping floors. The master bedroom had an efficient air conditioner/heater and big comfy bed.

The main living area was lovely, albeit that the air conditioner/heater was quite poor at warming the room. Due to the historical nature of the building, the room is not insulated nor equipped with double glazing and was cold. It took a day to warm it up sufficiently. In addition, despite being on the top floor, you can still hear significant noise from outside the hotel. Not the hotel's fault - once again, it is the nature of staying in an old property.
There were two bathrooms, which was very handy, although the hot water in the main bathroom did not heat up sufficiently to run a comfortable bath.
The big plus points were there were two smart-TVs, one in the master bedroom and one in the lounge area. In addition, we had a full-size fridge, Nespresso machine and microwave within a mini-kitchenette.

The room was clean throughout. Although, as the room had not been serviced, at 3pm, we spoke with reception about it. The lady who checked us in referenced timings of when housekeeping operates. Meanwhile, the aforementioned hero Madalin, looked towards us, observed what was happening and then typed something into his phone. When we returned an hour later, the room had been serviced and all was well.

The renovations of the bar area were a big improvement on previous visits, but the gym and spa were closed.

Our breakfast experience was average at best. The buffet has been replaced with a menu. The cooked "Full English" was difficult to customise (I tried). I asked for just bacon, sausage and mushrooms, but the rest of it still arrived. Not a big issue, but I think that offering a customised choice of which cooked items items along with a desired quantity would be a much better offering. Furthermore, on both days, there was no black pudding and the hot items arrived at temperatures between cool and lukewarm. The continental selection was pretty meagre, too.
If we had not prepaid to include breakfast, we would not take it, nor pay for it.

We enjoyed our stay, but have decided to have a break from visiting for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, in the meantime, standards will have picked up to what they were previously.

Great location, lovely rooms, could do with attention to service at busy times.
Pros:

Lovely feature room with lots of space and a big ensuite up a few stairs (but in same room) . Only let down by the fact that one of the lamps didn’t work and the carpet was grubby.

Cons:

Breakfast service was extremely slow - waited at least half an hour to get a coffee and 45 mins for food, without any real acknowledgement from staff that this was an issue.

Dreadful rxperience
Pros:

Staff were snotty and rude. Told us table was reserved. Then changed story to say they would not provide a morning coffee unless we were going to eat.

Superb food and service
Pros:

My husband and I visited the King's Head Hotel in Cirencester, early in March and had the most fabulous meal there.

We began with delicious starters that were full of flavour and beautifully presented—an excellent beginning to the meal.

For our mains, the filet steak was cooked to perfection: tender, juicy, and absolutely outstanding. The monkfish was equally superb, fresh and wonderfully seasoned.

To finish, we each enjoyed a great pudding that was the perfect ending to a truly memorable dining experience.

Service throughout was warm, attentive, and faultless and the staff catered so well for my husband who is coeliac. Highly recommended!

We will definitely return x

Lovely staff and renovations but poor continental breakfast
Pros:

We have stayed many times at the Kings Head and really liked all the updates that the new owners have done on the ground floor. We had a classic room which was great apart from no fridge which was annoying. Breakfast was very disappointing especially for me as I don't have a cooked breakfast - the unhealthy continental provision was very minimal set out on a small table - no fruit salad (only fruit was some melon slices), no yogurt, no granola/muesli, no seeds, no prunes, no bran of any sort (just 4 unhealthy cereals in packets). Breakfast at the Kings Head was part of the reason we booked this hotel as it was so good in the past. On the positive side the breakfast staff were very friendly (as was the young girl who checked us in at Reception) and the coffee was delicious. I am sure we will stay again and just cross fingers that the breakfast is improved.
