We made a return visit to Hotel Castanheiro in Funchal, Madeira in February 2026, having first visited in 2024. We were delighted to see that many of the staff who had made our first trip so memorable were still working there. The hotel is just a short drive from the airport and is well situated a short walk from restaurants, cafes, shops and museums. Our room was spacious (Junior Suite), clean and was well serviced throughout our stay. The food in the hotel is excellent although we felt the breakfast buffet food could sometimes not be very hot. There was however always a good choice of options, including food that could be freshly cooked and brought to the table.

Location was brilliant, easy walking to sea front and town centre. Staff attentive and courteous. Food very good. Rooms clean and comfortable. We had a super week

Stayed for 4 nights and could have stayed much longer! The rooms are stylish, clean & very comfortable....including choice of pillows & good aircon.
The staff (reception, bar, restaurant, cleaners) are all consistently friendly, efficient & professional.
Large choice at breakfast, including many of the fruits the island is famous for. Also choice of eating inside or out, when the weather permits.
Rooftop pool & hot tub are also nice, with views both up the mountain & out to sea.
Pool was a tad chilly but OK once you got moving.
Spa is also nice, though pool could have been warmer.
Bar does a happy hour 6pm to 7pm, 2 for 1 which is good value. We had mojitos and caprihinas, both of which were good.
In short, definitely recommend and will visit again if we return to Madeira.

Enjoyed every minute of our stay here. The beautiful room, the comfortable bed,the calm surroundings, the wonderful food,and the amazing staff all contributed to the best holiday we have had in a long time. The hotel's location is ideal ,the building itself beautiful, the pool and spa provide every thing needed to totally relax ,also recommend getting a massage, you will leave feeling 10 years younger! To be honest we could go on and on about this hotel, just book it and go,maderia is fabulous and this hotel is too!

Absolute gem in the heart of Funchal. We stayed for a week for my partners 30th birthday and had an incredible week at the hotel. The service from the team was top tier, with nothing being too much trouble. On my request a few weeks before arriving, the team organised a fresh (and still warm) gluten free chocolate birthday cake for my other half. This, along with the guidance from the reception team on hiking routes and transport links really was the best service I have had from a hotel in years. The spa was an oasis of calm, with some brilliant treatments. The staff were very talented and professional - the best Indian head massage I have ever had. The suite was exceptionally clean and refreshed daily by the team. We were B&B and enjoyed the breakfast offering with the staff being very accommodating for my gluten free needs. Gluten free bread was toasted in the kitchen, rather than the shared toaster to prevent cross contamination. There were also gluten free cakes and cereal options available. The lobby bar was a lovely setting for a drink in the evening, with great value/quality cocktails. The hotel is a very short walk into the centre of Funchal and is on a lovely quiet street. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit Funchal.

We had a wonderful 3 nights staying in a very quiet courtyard facing in room. The hotel and room were very clean and the bed comfortable. We had a lovely small balcony to sit out on with a table and 2 chairs. Our view over Funchal was beautiful especially at night. The room was very clean and so too the bathroom.

The breakfasts served were wonderful. So much choice of fresh produce. The fruit was in abundance! On one sunny morning we were even able to take a glass of bubbles to sit out on the lovely courtyard with.

During our stay it was very windy but we braved it to the rooftop for the views. Sadly it was too cold to swim in the pool and the rooftop bar was closed.

Just outside of the hotel we found ourselves in walking distance to all of the attractions. It was superbly located. Front of house staff were friendly.

If we had been visiting later in the year (we came in January) I’m sure there would have been more atmosphere of an evening and people around. Instead we chose to eat out at the many restaurants on offer.

This was a wonderful hotel and we can highly recommend it!

This is a lovely hotel tucked away in the centre of Funchal. It's in a great location to accrss bars, resturants in the old a new town - a short easy stroll gets you to both areas.

Easy access to local buses for sightseeing if you are heading out of town.

Hotel Amenities are prrfect for a city break - rooftoop lap pool, hot tub and bar with syn terrace. Indoor gym, sauna, steamrrom and small pool and amazing spa treatments. We sampled Honey Massage and Sports Massage.

Breakfast was a combination of selfserice buffet and cook to order ( all included in price). Delicious selection if food and drinks.

We ate dinner in the hotel once (reviewed ) which was tasty but we prefer to go out snd explore.

Bar was good for pre dinne4 drink.

Room soacious and comfortablr.

We decided to stay here more centrally in funchal. Both the location and the hotel were great. A lovely jumble of buildings. Spacious well kept and clean rooms. The location is great for sightseeing and going out for dinner. Lots of great places to eat nearby. Having chosen to stay here and walked through the Porto Santo hotel district, this place wins hands down. Nice rooftop terrace / pool and spa as well.

This was our second visit to Madeira and our second stay at this property. We knew immediately that it would always be our home away from home in Madeira. First, the staff is incredible. We specifically want to mention Claudia. She recognized from our previous stay and welcomed us back with her beautiful smile that could light up a room. Thank you also to her colleague (I'm sorry we didn't get his name) who gave us the same room we had last year, making the experience even more personal.

The location of the hotel is perfect for walking to everything within Funchal. The breakfast is excellent with a large and diverse buffet, and you are allowed to order an item off of the menu. The staff is hard working, caring and efficient. A+!

Our room was tip top with an excellent bed and shower.

This property will remain our go to in Madeira.

We have recently returned from our 5th visit to the Castanheiro.It is a very comfortable hotel,very well run and rewards loyalty.We love its location and its quiet elegance.
A few minor points-some of the flooring in the bar and downstairs loos need replacing,and although we commend bar staff and reception for their friendliness(particularly Luisa),a couple of the breakfast staff could do with lightening up.

The location is in the center of Funchal. you can walk to the farmers market or the waterfront promenade easily.
