Writing cheques it can't cash
Pros:

Nice location. That's it! No atmosphere, rooms were freezing. Noone made up the room in 3 days so no clean towels or tea/coffee top ups (even after reporting the fact). No biscuits in the complimentary tray. Rooms very dated, dusty and bathroom dirty. Had to change rooms due to no water pressure and poor facilities. Second room not much better! Breakfast was an effort! Only us there ... had a bacon roll and a Danish. No buffet. Had dinner on first night but too rowdy as restaurant was full of drunk golfers!

Indian head massage
Pros:

Today I visited the spa at shaw hill for an Indian head massage. Therapist Pauline carried out the treatment. I had had many Indian head massages over the years and this by far was the best in my experience. Warm, welcoming, beautiful oil scent and the massage was out of this world. 10/10. I’ll be back.

Recommended , lovely staff and character
Pros:

First impression was it looked old and tired, BUT I WOULD DEFINITELY STAY there again and recommend it to others .
However, although it was old , and apparently I was told by staff it was built in 1720, it was doing pretty well 😊
We stayed in room 24 on the first floor( no lifts) and it had 3 massive windows which looked over the golf course . The room was very big , and the bathroom had a shower and a bath. I loved the room
Staff on reception were lovely and very welcoming and Jamie could give a great history lesson about the family who owned it.
Breakfast was buffet style cereal, toast and pastries , but cooked breakfast was made to order and delicious.
Caroline was our breakfast waitress and she was so helpful and nothing was a bother.
They also hold functions and weddings and have rooms set up
Beautifully. There is also a swimming pool
And spa area.
Even though it is old, it is clean and warm and comfortable. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, and loved the fact it had character .
We were there nearing Xmas and they had all the Xmas trees and decorations up, which made it feel very cosy.

Amazing Venue & Staff gave us a Wedding we will never forget
Pros:

We cannot thank the staff at Shaw Hill enough for giving us the most magical autumn wedding day we could have wished for. From day one, their communication was outstanding, and they supported us every step of the way throughout our planning journey.

On the day itself, Alec, Amy and the entire team created an experience we will never forget. They were always on hand—coordinating with our vendors, guiding our guests, and helping both me and my wife stay calm and relaxed from start to finish.

The venue looked absolutely stunning, surrounded by beautiful autumn leaves arranged by Sofisticated Design, and the Gold Room was laid out perfectly.
It truly was everything we envisioned and more, cannot recommend Shaw Hill enough for your dream wedding venue.

A VERY HONEST REVIEW OF THE SPA LEISURE SUITE! - IT WOULD BE ALRIGHT WERE IT NOT FOR THE SWIMMING LESSONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pros:

Myself and my partner pursued memberships here for and leisure club area (steam room, sauna, jacuzzi) and pool in February, 2025. Initially we were charged £200 each for 3 months, which we were told covered the gym and the classes and the wetside stuff. We reiterated that we were not interested in the gym, but only the wetside stuff but we were told it wasn’t possible at this time to just purchase wetside only memberships. Upon joining, we talked to some members who did pay for only wetside only memberships at a reduced rate of £150 a month and we raised this with management who allowed us to purchase wetside only memberships next time. We paid £200 each and then £150 each and then £150 each again (so £500 each for 9 months). They encouraged us to pay £600 for a year membership, but when it was £150 for 3 months and there were so many continuous issues, we decided to pay every 3 months as we did not wish to commit to a year's membership at this time!

The jacuzzi, steam room and sauna and indeed the pool are all very good facilities and I have no complaints about the actual facilities.

The aqua aerobics/ water exercise classes are fantastic!
Lots of energy and it ends with Billie Jean (the song).

However there were some difficulties which were ongoing. Shaw Hill despite advertising the leisure suite as for members and hotel guests, rents out their pool to swimming lessons for small children from Glover's swimming school who are supposed to be present from 4-7pm Monday’s (but they set up nearly an hour early and fill the changing rooms for about an hour afterwards) so it takes 5 hours away from members, 8-11 saturday (so call it 12noon by the time they’ve vacated) and Friday mornings also.

Unfortunately as the pool is right next to the jacuzzi and steam room and the sauna, members really cannot enjoy a relaxing experience whilst the swimming lessons are present. The changing rooms have no cubicles available in the men’s and one only in the female changing room which makes it harder for those with children and makes it feel uneasy generally speaking for the adults in the changing rooms. Whilst the swimming lesson's are only supposed to rent 2/3rds of the pool and are supposed to leave a lane for members swimming, they frequently use this lane when they think no members want it, which makes it difficult to swim lengths if you do arrive during the time swimming lessons are on.

The place is in need of a good cleaning after swimming lessons as they generally make a right mess of the changing rooms area with litter and plasters being a common sight after swimming lessons have left.

Whilst having good facilities and friendly reception staff, we experienced questionable and sketchy management on several occasions.

We were sent an email in October advising that they were closing the spa and pool area for 5 days in order to refurb the reception and changing rooms area. We sent numerous emails asking if these 5 days could be added into our membership but did not receive a reply, other than an out of office immediate reply, stating that the manager was away for another 11 days and would reply upon her return (which she didn’t.)

During one of the swimming lessons in September; the ceiling became damaged by a toy that the instructor threw (no kidding!!)🤷‍♀️ and thus Shaw advised us that there would be a further few days disruption coming up while they close the pool and erect scaffolding in order to repair this.

Given that we had not received any communication regarding whether or not the 5 days they had closed to refurb the reception area would be added to our memberships in October, the idea of another closure in our membership period was worrying.

It was this that was the final straw that led to us not renewing our memberships.

It’s a shame as the facilities are 4 star really and some of the staff bend over backwards (The aqua aerobics instructor does quite literally), but not with the swimming lessons being there 3 days a week. If you become a member, you will soon learn the times to avoid, because they are simply so disruptive. The place isn't set up for adult members to enjoy the facilities while the swimming lessons are on as even if you could block out the noise (it's hard - instructors are constantly shouting and it echos and there are a lot of children there so it's very noisy) but the jacuzzi is literally next to the pool which means if you sit in it you are effectively facing the pool. The same applies to the sauna.

The steam room is tucked away a little more so if you go to the back of the steam room, you can just about not hear or see them if you try hard to block the noise out. Unfortunately physically you will not be able to stand staying in the steam room longer than a few minutes however.
When trying to gain access to the changing rooms, the parents of children glare at adult members as though they shouldn't be there, whilst an array of dreadful parenting strategies are frequently on display in the changing rooms and on poolside. On one occasion, I was trying to get changed and a lady was getting changed two children (one boy, one girl) in the women's changing room and she was focusing on the small boy, but his older sister was literally just standing there, face distorted, screaming repeatedly... whilst the mother may have developed an ability to ignore this, it was very headache inducing for the adults in the changing room.

QUITE FRANKLY, THE SPA AND LEISURE SUITE WOULD BE ALRIGHT WITHOUT THE SWIMMING LESSONS, BUT THEY PULL IT INTO A FAR LOWER STAR RATING THAN IT SHOULD BE. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A FOUR STAR HOTEL AND SPA BUT THE PRESENCE OF THE SWIMMING LESSONS TAKING OVER THE LEISURE SUITE THREE DAYS A WEEK IS CERTAINLY NOT AN ASSET TO THEM. IT IMPLIES GREED AND POOR MANAGEMENT AND DOUBLE BOOKING OF FACILITIES. THE MANAGEMENT HAVE NO CONTROL WHATSOVER OVER THE SWIMMING LESSONS. ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION, A SWIMMING LESSON'S PARENT HAS CHANGED INTO SWIM GEAR THEMSELVES AND SAT IN THE JACUZZI WITH THEIR CHILD (WHICH IS NOT ALLOWED, AND THE SWIMMING LESSONS HAVE PAID FOR 2/3 OF THE POOL, NOT TO USE THE JACUZZI) WHICH MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR MEMBERS TO USE THE JACUZZI. THE CHILD WAS ABOUT 6-7 AND WAS SITTING IN THE JACUZZI FOR ABOUT AN HOUR PLAYING WITH BATH TOYS.

DESPITE HAVING A CAMERA ON RECEPTION, AND STATING THAT POOLSIDE IS CHECKED REGULARLY (EVERY 2 HOURS) THE STAFF ON RECEPTION DO NOT NOTICE THESE THINGS UNLESS DIRECTLY NOTIFIED BY A MEMBER. THERE IS NO MEMBER OF STAFF ON POOLSIDE AND NO BUTTON TO ALERT THEM TO COME TO POOL SIDE- MEANING YOU HAVE TO WALK THROUGH THE CHANGING ROOMS AND APPEAR AT RECEPTION IN YOUR SWIM GEAR (VERY COLD AS ITS NEXT TO THE ENTRANCE DOOR) TO TRY AND TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT ISSUES, UNLESS YOU WAIT UNTIL YOU GET CHANGED AND ARE LEAVING, BUT THE STAFF DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THEN AND JUST SAY "WE'LL PASS IT ON" BUT NOTHING EVER CHANGES OR GETS DONE.

WE TRIED FOR 9 MONTHS TO ENJOY MEMBERSHIPS THERE AND AS STATED, THERE ARE SOME POSITIVES. THERE ARE SOME TRULY LOVELY MEMBERS. SOME FANTASTIC STAFF (ANGELA WAS VERY GOOD!) BUT SADLY DREADFUL MANAGEMENT, INSUFFICIENT ENFORCEMENT OF THE RULES AND CONSTANT TURNING OF BLIND EYES, CONBINED WITH THE PRESENCE OF THE INFANT'S SWIMMING LESSONS HAVE SIMPLY RUINED THIS PLACE.

IT WOULD BE ARLIGHT IF PROPERLY MANAGED AND WITHOUT THE SWIMMING LESSONS!

Former glory
Pros:

Set within beautiful ground this must attract many weddings. However on this occasion we were for a post funeral gathering. The building has seen better days and is looking rather tired. That said the staff were excellent.
The room was grand, old fashioned and the bathroom was ready for a refit.
No golf shop facility as it had just closed down.

Above and Beyond Service at Shaw Hill!
Pros:

As the Chief Bridesmaid for a wedding held at Shaw Hill Golf Club & Spa this past weekend, I spent months immersed in the planning process. I can honestly say that the entire experience, from the moment we first spoke to the team to the final moments of the reception, was nothing short of extraordinary. Shaw Hill is not just a beautiful venue; it is staffed by truly exceptional people who make magic happen.
For anyone tasked with coordination and detail management, the organisation and approachability of the Shaw Hill team were an absolute lifesaver. They took all the pressure off, allowing the bride (and me!) to relax and fully enjoy the celebration. Everything ran seamlessly, and their professionalism meant that every potential hiccup was managed before it even became an issue.
We owe huge thanks and specific praise to three members of the team who went above and beyond: Amy, Alec, and Alex. Their combined effort provided an amazing level of service. They were tirelessly organised, always accessible for questions, and genuinely approachable, making us feel like nothing was too much trouble. They clearly love what they do, and that energy translates directly into flawless execution.
If you are looking for a venue that offers stunning surroundings, fantastic amenities, and—most importantly—a world-class team committed to delivering perfection, look no further than Shaw Hill. Five stars across the board; they are highly recommended!

Charity Event
Pros:

We recently hosted a charity event at Shaw Hill and I cannot fault the production team. Alex, Alec and Abbie were amazing - nothing was too much trouble for them and they helped to make the event a success.

In the lead up to the event, Amy and the team were very accommodating and allowed us to visit and discuss with a member of the team.

Would recommend hosting an event with Shaw Hill.

Disappointing stay from start to finish,. The actual hotel is not reflective of the standards advertised.
Pros:

Firstly, the cleanliness of the family bedroom we were given was entirely unacceptable. The room was infested with flies (even though no windows were ever opened in the bedroom) – we killed approximately eight within the first two hours, yet they continued to appear throughout. The bin was filthy, and the bathroom window sill was also covered in dead flies. We attempted to control the flies ourselves, however at 10pm at night when they just kept reappearing we gave up and requested to move rooms, but the only option available was a queen room. As a result, my father had to remain in the fly-infested room.

As we were moving to a queen room with my mother, we asked a member of staff for an additional quilt, but was told that wasn’t possible. I then took the quilt off one of the beds in the family room (we were moving from) and discovered a large amount of someone else's hair within the quilt cover upon removing it – a deeply unpleasant discovery, as shown in the attached photo.

Furthermore, we were told by a staff member that no additional pillows or bedding could be provided, as housekeeping were not available and the storage room was locked. It seems quite unreasonable that guests cannot request basic items like a pillow or blanket outside housekeeping hours.

Additionally, we were surprised to learn that guests are expected to bring their room towels to the spa – and that forgetting to do so incurs a charge to hire one. This resulted in us having to use damp towels after showering in our room. While this policy may be understandable for spa or gym-only visitors, hotel guests should be informed clearly in advance. This was not made clear to us at any point prior to our visit.

Breakfast was also disappointing. Prior to arrival, we were informed that breakfast would be cooked to order. In reality, the menu was extremely limited, and the "natural yoghurt and fruit platter" turned out to be some slices of watermelon alongside individual pre-packaged strawberry yoghurts, which were certainly not natural. Furthermore, we had to repeatedly ask for a pot of tea before a member of staff reluctantly provided one.

Finally, the general state of the hotel was far from what we expected. Whilst we understand and appreciate that renovations are taking place to improve the hotel, the family room we were allocated was unclean, in dire need of repairs and had a strong and unpleasant odour of glue and paint, which made the environment quite uncomfortable. I do not think the bedroom should have been open to guests.

When we handed our keys back, we asked for updates on the room and they provided no feedback and seems uninterested with our worries that the room would be booked out again and another family would have similar issue.

Disappointing stay from start to finish! Would never book there again.

Pros:

Generally a nice hotel, staff were nice.
We wasn’t given full information on check in, such as if you wanted your room cleaned you had to book that the night before.
Also there was a private event on Friday night & when we went to the dine we was initially told we couldn’t eat in the hotel, after complaining we was told we could dine but not till after 8pm once the private event was catered for.
We agreed to this but our food order was not taken till 8.30pm & that was after prompting…! It was nearly 10pm before our food arrived.
It made you feel rather unimportant as a guest.
However food was really nice.

Great stay
Pros:

I stayed one night at this hotel and overall had a great experience. The customer service was excellent, especially the waiting staff in the breakfast area who were very attentive. The room was massive with a lovely view, which made the stay even more enjoyable. The bus service was also very convenient and well-organized.

The only downside was the lack of a lift. With a large piece of luggage, I had to carry it upstairs, which was a bit inconvenient. Other than that, everything was very nice and I truly enjoyed my stay.

Our Wedding
Pros:

Our wedding at Shaw Hill Golf and Spa Hotel was honestly incredible! The venue itself is so beautiful and its surroundings, I knew as soon as I walked in that this was the venue we wanted to get married in.
The Gold Room, where we had our ceremony is absolutely beautiful and the decor by Sophisticated Events was breathtaking.
All of the staff are brilliant. Everyone was so attentive and helpful, making sure everything ran smoothly.
A special mention goes to Alec, our master of ceremonies, he went above and beyond for us and made the whole experience even more special, nothing was too much and we’ve had comments from family and friends about how nice he was and how much effort he made with everyone there, he is a true credit to this place! We couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate our day!

The most amazing wedding day!
Pros:

We had our wedding at Shaw Hill, and it was genuinely the best day of our lives. From the very beginning, the team made us feel completely at ease. Weeks before the big day, Amy booked us in for a chat, and we had such a laugh it honestly helped ease all my worries and made me feel so excited rather than stressed!
On the day itself, despite the groom’s car breaking down (yes, really!), everything ran flawlessly and that’s all down to the incredible staff.

A massive shoutout to Alec, our wedding coordinator and the most amazing Master of Ceremonies. He went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect his energy, professionalism, and attention to detail were second to none. Every single member of staff on the day was just incredible nothing was too much trouble, and they truly made us feel like royalty.

The whole experience was magical, and if I could do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat. If you’re considering Shaw Hill for your wedding, stop thinking and just do it and definitely go for the Diamond Package! You will not regret it.
Highly, highly recommend

thank you again to everyone at Shaw Hill for making our day so unforgettable.

Pros:

The staff were welcoming, our room was clean but there was extensive water damage on the ceiling, the sash windows were in poor condition and one was even painted shut! We stayed for a family wedding and were very disappointed with the overall, tired, condition of the property. The bride and groom had to move to another room as the honeymoon suite flooded during the night! Much work needed to bring it up to standard I would think!
