Sublime views, traditional values and quality facilities are emblematic of this grand hotel.
Pros:

Beautiful location with superb views and a feel of slightly faded grandeur. Wood panelled interiors are lovely and it all speaks tradition and quality. The bedroom was wonderful with excellent mattress and plenty of space and room to hang up your clothing. Breathtaking views across Bute bay. Lovely modern bathroom. The staff were lovely and we had an excellent dinner.

Cons:

Do look past the exterior scaffolding on one side of the building, it’s a minor consideration and doesn’t affect your stay. The hotel could do with more parking spaces.

Could do better
Pros:

We have visited before and have good memories of previous visits. The staff were great, our room was comfortable and the food (breakfast & evening) was good

Cons:

Disappointed that the gardens were closed off for no apparent reason and members of staff couldn't (or wouldn't) give a satisfactory reason. Also many areas still in need of a bit of TLC

Potential but run down
Pros:

Good location just on the road out of Rothesay.
Comfortable beds and pillows.
Great food and the evening wait staff (all young ones) were lovely.
Good views. Good prices. Beautiful exterior with lots of history.

Cons:

Very very dated. You can tell that it was probably a beautiful hotel in its time. Pictures of rooms and especially bathrooms don't necessarily reflext reality. Peeling paint, ratty carpets. Would almost be worth closing down sections of the hotel and bringing parts of it at a time up to scratch. Cleanliness could be much better. Everything just smelling of bleach but without looking clean. Bizarrely the heating was on in the stairs and hallways even in July. Gardens were blocked off. Breakfast wait staff were a bit nippy when we asked to speak to a manger upon check out.
Its an unfortunate cycle - needs to bring in money to pay for refurbishment but can't charge good money to stay when it needs such work.
