A bit run down.
The room I was in looked recently decorated certainly not in need of a makeover like last year.
However what makes this such a great place to stay is definitely the staff. They are friendly and efficient, the restaurant staff especially appeared to enjoy their work and happily engaged in banter with the diners alongside doing their job well
Just a one night stop, but all was good, would certainly stay here again. Great location for our trip to Galashiels.
The room was large but looked quite basic on furnishings, but the bed was very comfortable. The corridor leading to our room smelt of damp which wasn't pleasant. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast & dinner. Breakfast was quite good in my opinion. At dinner the rules weren't explained to us (how to get a drink either from the bar or self service water dispenser). We felt the staff weren't particularly friendly & the company tshirts they were wearing weren't appropriate for the dining room. The 3 course meal wasn't of a very high standard & the pork roast reminded me of a ready meal & the food served wasn't a good quality & the staff didn't seem to care if we were happy or not. The communal areas were nice in presentation but I would not stay again nor recommend this hotel or chain to others. We found the stay to be a disappointment.
Need to be clearer about chiefs specials. You have to order in the morning but this is difficult in the first day.dint mind the set menu but it should have the chefs special on the printed nenus.also the fireign visitor's dud nit gave the menu in their language which caused problems. Quiet entertaining for us but not the visitors. The staff looked after us and it was in a great location. The bathroom needed overhall. It was all very clean
The staff were really helpful and responded positively to our request for a quiet place to meet in the evening and provided fresh milk in our rooms.
We only stayed a short time due to our tight schedule, but we loved every second we did spend here! The property is gorgeous and the hotel is located in such a quiet area with no traffic. It's great for when you want to be close to Edinburgh without being right in downtown. Perfect escape from the city!
A bit run down, needs updating but clean, good service, friendly staff
All The hotel staff are very helpful and obliging.
They were efficient at meal times in a very full restaurant
The room was tired but very clean.
We had an enjoyable stay.
Desperately needs a refurb and a good clean I stay regular throughout the country and although the service was good the hotel is in desperate need a journey into the 21st century.
Our double room was huge, but very dirty. The restaurant food was not worth eating.
Unfortunately we could not check in as we could not stay…When we arrived at the Waverley Castle hotel were told no dogs were allowed. It was pointed out to us that it was in the T&As. As we had stayed there before and enjoyed our stay with the dog we did not feel the need to read the T&As. We did not know that the hotel had changed ownership.. And as suggested to us about leaving dog in car was not an option for us as dog thefts are common and could not risk that. So we decided to look for other accommodation which we found couple of miles away who were very welcoming of us and our dog..
Run tap for 5 mins before hot water came through if at all. Noisy motor for frudge cooler running all day.
The evening meal and breakfast were both delicious. The hotel experience itself was shabby and shambolic. Got an mail when I was on the way telling me that they had been unable to charge my card and therefore to contact them as my booking was in jeopardy. Arrived and asked WHY they had been trying to charge my card? It was a pay-at-property booking with hotel.com. Their muddled up answer was nonsense.
They then took payment by asking for card details as they had no card machine and said they didn’t give receipts. I insisted and got one e mailed the next day.
They then showed us to a room with a badly stained carpet - and paper thin walls which resulted in a very poor night sleep. We were told breakfast was 730 to 930 and when we went to Reception at 9 am we were told it was finished. When I queried it they checked and apologised for their mistake….
We had breakfast and then checked with Reception that we had to vacate the room by 11 am as it said on our booking.
“No … you have to be out by 10” we were told.
We left and a couple of hours later I received a phone call from them. Phoned back, and they had no idea who or why I had been called….
My overall impression is of a complete shambles. Great hotel if you don’t mind them randomly charging your card, randomly phoning you up for no reason, and randomly change their published times for things.
Enjoyed our stay. The staff were particularly friendly and helpful. The room was spotless. The hotel overall however is much in need of an upgrade. The carpets, paintwork etc, very tired. Well situated for walking from the hotel along the river Tweed and further afield.
Lovely people and great location. The building is spectacular but a little worn and tired. Can't wait to go back once the renovations are done!
We couldn’t get WiFi in Room 1 so I asked if we could change rooms which was arranged. The rooms were clean and tidy and the bed was very comfortable. We were disturbed by loud music at about 8 pm one evening which we thought at first might be a Christmas party but when my husband went to investigate he couldn’t see anything, the barman told him that it was probably coming from the kitchen, it stopped after about an hour. Breakfast was good except for the poached eggs. The staff were friendly. I would definitely return a to this hotel
Friendly staff, excellent food. Room was a bit basic but did the job however got woken up by noisy at 5am!
Just returned from a 3 night stay. Hotel is a little dated but clean we had room 4 on the ground floor which was nice and spacious although no central heating instead we had 2 small electric oil filled radiators which only managed to heat room.
Dinning room for breakfast and evening meal had No heating and was freezing. Think every guest commented on it being so cold. Remember you get what you pay for and this hotel is definitely good value for money. I would return but only in the summer months
The property was a bit tired needed some work done on it internally. But it served the purpose local to the BGH.
