Almost perfect
Pros:

Almost everything.
Reception staff went out of their way to help us with booking train tickets.
Excellent buffet breakfast, though a bit expensive.

Cons:

For a large international hotel, very few staff spoke English. My Chinese is very limited. This led to one breakfast selection being incorrectly delivered to our room. The hotel did kindly withdraw the cost of that meal but I was still disappointed not to receive my breakfast of choice.

Comfy stay in Kunming
Pros:

My stay was truly wonderful. The comfortable and thoughtfully designed accommodation, with its convenient facilities, made the entire experience effortless and relaxing.

The bellhop greeted us with genuine warmth and professionalism, handling our luggage and belongings with ease. At breakfast, the attentive waitress, Nancy Wang, anticipated our needs before we even voiced them, ensuring that our morning began on a perfect note.

The breakfast spread offered a wide variety of delicious options. I truly appreciated the clear dietary and allergen-friendly selections, which made choosing meals both safe and enjoyable.

Overall, this stay exceeded our expectations in every way. We highly recommend it to anyone seeking comfort, great service, and thoughtful hospitality.

Love the Hotel. Not the Air - Conditioning.
Pros:

We love the hotel, NOT the air-conditioning system. Our stay was from 1st to 7th Dec 2025.

Things were nicely arranged at this 5-star hotel. However, comfort plays the most important role when it comes to creating a memorable stay.

Expectations are high for our stay as it was also to celebrate the wedding anniversary. The positives go to good and quality services provided by reception, and F & B staff. The Managers lead by example. It makes a big difference when we check in, and different restaurants whether for breakfast or dinner.

The main issue is the aged ventilation or air conditioning system which has totally spoilt our trip. I should have taken feedback from fellow travelers or folks who stayed here before seriously regarding this issue.

My good impression on Accor group properties has taken a toll from now on having stayed at different brands of properties across Asia Pacific over the years. It does not mean previous stays do not have any issues, but not as serious or bad as this.

Room assigned has been upgraded to Elite 38th floor. From the 1st night, it's clear that ventilation is having an issue. And the previous guest has opened the bathroom window despite the hotel’s gentle reminder not to do so. When checked temperature display at the thermostat, it showed 25.5 to 26.0 degrees Celsius. No matter how I adjusted it, it just stayed there and continued till the 2nd night. I had contacted the guest service which gotten “an experienced technician” which his suggestion is more on patronizing instead of solving the problem He does not think it’s an issue and not knowing people like me who have basic project management experience (at work). He asked us to consider changing rooms. It’s unbearable and affects our sleep.

My wife and I started feeling unwell on the 3rd day onwards due to poor sleep quality caused by the warm temperature in the room. I spoke to the management staff at reception who assisted me before the stay and assured me it would not be an issue. He could have been upfront earlier or hinted even if opening the window may not significantly help in resolving the situation. Hoteliers need to know that not every customer wants to change rooms if things have been done right from the beginning. When you are on a week’s trip, the idea of changing rooms, and not sure if it will work or not, is not funny at all.

During our discussion, I requested to have another Panasonic air purifier which helped the situation a bit. Air conditioning needs to always be on, and the housekeeping has been diligently open the window near the worktable. It continued until the day we checked out. Imagine the room is stuffy and warm, how can it not affect the sleep quality? We were in Japan, Korea or Taiwan almost yearly during winter period or like in Kunming.

Day 6. We noticed the hotel maintenance team could have done something to the air conditioning when we were out. I contacted the guest service again. This time, a polite technician has explained that when temperature reaches a certain degree Celsius, the warm air or heater function will be on, and can’t be adjusted. I adjusted the thermostat temperature to 23 degrees Celsius, the display shown “heat”. When I turned it down further to 21 degrees Celsius, “cool” was displayed. However, after a few adjustments, the error message is out. The problem is still there. We checked out the next day and will not return.

Fantastic experience
Pros:

We love Sofitel Kunming. The staff are warm and friendly. They have a lovely attitude towards their guests. The room, breakfast and Club Millesime Floor are amazing
The sunset views are gorgeous . The free standing bath was so luxurious with bath bombs and bath salts. They even held our luggage (large bags) to enable us to travel through China on the fast trains for three weeks. If we return to China in the future this will be our pick. It's simply the best experience we have had on our four month trip. We will be sad to leave.

So, so... Sofitel
Pros:

The brand is right, the hotel a little less so. It used to be a "luxury hotel" (for its time), but now it's an "old lady" that deserves a renovation.
The so-called "club floor suites" are small, uncomfortable, and with outdated furnishings: only a junior suites. No more.
On the "non-club" floors, the suites are renovated, spacious, and refurbished.
The Club Millesime is spacious and has a splendid view of the lake. The food is quite good but in limited quantities (not replenished). The wines are Chinese, and the cocktails are watered down by too much ice (even when the ice should be limited: e.g., dry Martinis).

Pros:

My fiends stayed at their room had no hot water.
They were put into a room that was not used. Moist with mildew type atmosphere.
That room had issues and repairs were done at 2 am.
Breakfast was far less than expected, no cheese and far too oily foods!
Never again!!!!!!
