Nothing
Receptionist and guards are polite and helpful
The breakfast is like local street food and local dishes for three stars local hotel , did not meet the standard of international four stars hotel breakfast standard . The waiters for breakfast do not seem to have proper training . I was leaded to a table and when I return with food , my table was taken by somebody else . Disgusting ! And I did not return to the restaurant for breakfast again during my entire staying
Thanks to receptionist ,Jessica who help us for replacement of.shopping cloth.
Sofitel brand as always the best and never make me disappointed. Most hotels breakfast wouldn’t be located on top of the building (49 floors). This is highlighted in Kunming.

I had a wonderful stay at Sofitel Kunming. The hotel offers stunning views of the city and the rooms are elegant, comfortable, clean and very quiet. The staff were professional and welcoming throughout my stay.
One of the highlights was definitely the food. The restaurants offer a great variety of high-quality dishes, and every meal I tried was delicious and beautifully presented. Breakfast had many options, both international and local.
Access to the Club lounge was also a fantastic experience. The atmosphere was relaxing, with great views, attentive service, and a nice selection of drinks and snacks during the day and evening. Great value!
Overall, Sofitel Kunming combines luxury, great dining, and excellent service. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kunming, even for its proximity to the main train station.
Good food , good service, best value
The room is huge and the view is fabulous.
The location is off from the city center and it was little pricy.
In February, my husband and I visited Kunming for the first time, and our stay at the Sofitel Kunming left us thoroughly impressed. From the moment we arrived, the hotel exceeded every expectation, blending modern luxury with genuine warmth in a way that felt truly special.
The property itself is stunning – the beautifully landscaped gardens, elegant lobby, spacious rooms, good breakfast buffet, and sophisticated dining areas all feel contemporary, airy, and impeccably designed. Everything is thoughtfully appointed, creating an atmosphere of refined comfort throughout.
What made our experience even more memorable were the little touches of care. An adorable delivery robot brought items to our room twice – a fun and efficient surprise that delighted us. On our first day, after arriving feeling a bit under the weather from the cold, the kitchen staff kindly sent a warming bowl of ginger tea to our room. It was such a thoughtful gesture that instantly made us feel looked after.
Above all, the staff were the heart of this hotel. Everyone – from the front desk and concierge to the doormen and kitchen team – was genuinely kind, attentive, and eager to help. Having lived in the U.S. for over 30 years, we weren’t very familiar with the local area and relied on their assistance for everything from shopping , sightseeing recommendations and directions to setting up rides on the DiDi app. They went above and beyond every time, with patience and warmth.
I especially want to recognize a few standout team members: the gracious and beautiful front desk agent Su Rui, her colleague Elina, and the tall, handsome doorman Mr. Ma. (I regret not catching the name of another wonderful young doorman who was equally helpful.) Their sincere friendliness made us feel like valued guests rather than just visitors.
For context, we had stayed at the Grand Hyatt Taipei a month earlier – another excellent 5-star property. Yet, when comparing the two, Sofitel Kunming clearly stood out as the superior experience, from the superior room quality and amenities to the outstanding service and breakfast selection.
This stay has firmly placed the Sofitel brand at the top of our list for future travels. We can’t recommend Sofitel Kunming highly enough – it’s a standout luxury hotel that delivers heartfelt hospitality alongside beautiful facilities. We’ll definitely return!
Almost everything.
Reception staff went out of their way to help us with booking train tickets.
Excellent buffet breakfast, though a bit expensive.
For a large international hotel, very few staff spoke English. My Chinese is very limited. This led to one breakfast selection being incorrectly delivered to our room. The hotel did kindly withdraw the cost of that meal but I was still disappointed not to receive my breakfast of choice.
Our short stay at the Sofitel Kunming was outstanding. The room was well appointed and the views of the city were breathtaking. I found that service was exceptional. James, the Chief Concierge, was the best! Prior to my stay, he kept in constant contact with me for the various activities I was interested in. He arranged a car to pick me up at the train station and provided the best English speaking tour guide named Pony. Pony guided us throughout the city and made sure we ate some of the local cuisine. I highly recommend this hotel when visiting Kunming.
I would like to thank James and his concierge team. They went above and beyond to help us. We had been travelling China for 6 weeks and had sent a bag to Novotel Kunming in anticipation for our last stop in China. Our plans changed slightly and we decided to stay at the Sofitel Kunming. James and his team took charge to contact the Novotel and locate the bag and send it to our room. This was a difficult challenge, as we later found out SFExpress only put the first two letters of my name on the luggage tag! As we had quite a few luggage’s, James and his team also helped to bring our bags down at checkout and load them into the car for us, it was a really great service from the concierge team!
The hotel itself, we stayed in a twin room. The room is very large with a great rain shower and bathtub. The Toilet is seperate with its own door, which I like when travelling with someone else. The temperature in the room was a little warm for my liking, but it seems to be common in Chinese hotels during winter. The windows on the lower floors could be opened which provided some relief, and the team provided a fan, but the room stayed a consistent 23 deg Celsius even with the aircon/heater turned off. Ironically, the hallway was actually colder so we would sometimes leave the door open to let in the cooler air. We only stayed 2 nights so it was acceptable but would be good if the hotel management can look into it. 23 degree Celsius for sleeping temperature for more foreigner is too high. And individually controlled system would be better so each guest can choose what is the comfortable temperature for them. Some people run hot (medical conditions, menopause etc) and just need a cooler room.
