Beautiful ryokan in a stunning location. The service from the staff was impeccable. The shuttle bus from the station was very handy.
The evening meal was many courses and provided a insight into Japanese traditional food. There were maikos during the meal for entertainment. The breakfast in the morning was my wife's favourite meal.
As stated by others, the accommodation is slightly aged, which we didn't mind. However, unfortunately under the table and on the skirting boards there was a large build-up of dust, which was very noticeable when sleeping on the floor. That was our only criticism of our otherwise amazing stay.
Very charming Ryokan, and a fantastic experience from a cultural point of view. The meals are served in very specific times, and there's a lot of food being served, so you need to be prepared to eat a quantity of food. Everything is very well prepared, and the staff is very friendly and respectful!
We had a wonderful stay and great meal. The staff was friendly and helpful. The facilities were clean and well kept.
Relaxing and romantic. Was 10/10 service. Also cater for dietary requirements. Would stay here again!
Great location. Female staff wonderful but male staff could use remedial training in attentiveness. Dinner setting fabulous and made perfect by arrival of fireflies on cue.
Serene location, multi-course traditional meals, and overall a unique & excellent experience.
Fantastic Ryokan experience, from start to finish. Only 30 min away from Tokyo and yet very secluded.
Note that Momijiya consist of two different accomodations: the main building up by the road (Honkan Sansou), and a more exclusive annex down by the river (Bekkan Kawa No Iori. This review concern the latter.
Shuttle bus service is offered from Hanazono station, among a few others.
The shuttle bus service to and from. On the way out the bus dropped us at one of three World Heritage temples (Ninnaji), helping us get our travels off on the right foot.
Endroit tranquille, personnel accueillant et très attentionné
This was a unique experience! It was my first time at a ryokan so I can only comment from my one encounter. But this location felt unique and beautiful, being secluded in wooded hills while remaining a short bus ride back to Kyoto. It also had both private open-air baths and a small public bath as well.
The staff at this inn went out of their way to accommodate us, from the waiting shuttle at the bust stop to helping with our bags, walking us through what to expect at check in (despite language barriers on our part), how to use the amenities in our room, and pouring us green tea. Staying in a traditional Japanese style room had the sense of what older times may have been like there, in both design and functionality. And in our room selection we slept on comfortable futons over a tatami mat floor with plush duvet coverings.
As for the food, there were many courses and it was beautifully prepared and served. Not all of it was familiar or what I was accustomed to, but part of the enjoyment was trying different things and I really appreciated that. If there was one thing I missed, it was that our stay in February ended up very cold, so I wish we could have explored the outdoor areas. A reason to visit again someday~ : )
Thank you for your hospitality!
Really beautiful and relaxing place!
This hotel is one of the best hotel in the suburbs of Kyoto especially during the red leaves season, the view is excellent!
This is a gorgeous property and really peaceful. The staff service was wonderful and attentive. We lost our bag on a public bus and the staff drove us to the police station to file a report, giving us a couple hours of their time, and were helpful throughout. The room was great, if a little cold in January, but they provided heating and thick blankets. The private bath was wonderful, especially after they taught us how to heat the tub.
A very nice old hotel in forest woth amazing personnal outside bath. A real pleasure. And a beautiful place outside city. And they have a shuttle bus from kyoto train station. So a place to be
Excellent stay. Everything was clean and the staff were very friendly. The area is gorgeous.
Une expérience inoubliable dans un cadre merveilleux. Un repas extraordinaire. Un festival de lucioles au dessus de la rivière.
there wasn’t a single thing about the property that wasn’t unique. Beautiful location, beautiful food, beautiful staff.
C'est l'endroit le plus zen que j'ai visité
We had a nice time at this more traditional stay. Most of the staff was very nice and helpful, and we really enjoyed the focus on traditional practices and meals. We also really loved the private onsen in our room. They provided us with a kimono and tea, and we had a private dinner in our room which was really fun.
- We thought the rooms could benefit from an upgrade. There was a bad odour coming from the bathroom at all times. I think picky eaters might have difficulties with the meals.
We stayed one night and for us it was enough. Overall I would still recommend this ryokan for the traditional and intimate experience!
After getting engaged at Tokyo Disney we wanted a countryside experience that allowed us some quiet, traditional time together. The attentive service, private onsen, and masterful meals did not disappoint! A great way to start our time in Kyoto
