Pool was closed for repairs
The decor in the inn was very cool and had a great breakfast!
For the most part the staff at the English Inn are usually quite helpful and kind. I travel with my mother for her medical treatment at UVA and the hotel is VERY conveniently located near the hospital and near many local stores and restaurants. We've stayed there quite frequently. This was a short trip so we didn't avail ourselves of breakfast or tea but usually those are quite nice in a quaint atmosphere.
However, this time I was extremely disappointed. I interacted with 3 staff members and only the front desk worker who I spoke to at 6am was kind and helpful. Both the clerk who checked me in at 11pm and the clerk who checked me out at 7:30am were less than interested in interacting with me. The check out clerk was also not interested in the problems I'd had with our stay.
The pool was closed for skylight renovations (this is not a huge issue for me, but worth mentioning if you're traveling with children).
The bigger issue for me was the treadmill (there is only one) and the air conditioner in the fitness center were not working. I am training for a distance race and not having a functional fitness center is especially vexing.
When I returned to my room the coffee pot was broken. I took it to the front desk, they didn't have a replacement. They DO have free coffee in the lobby though, so that was appreciated.
Then it was time for me to shower.
I've stayed there MANY times and I've never seen the shower design installed in the room I stayed in. No matter what I did the shower would NOT drain at a reasonable rate. I had to turn the shower on and off as I washed because the edge of the shower was only approximately half an inch deep and I ran the risk of flooding the bathroom floor. It was miserable and took forever.
I always count on the English Inn too provide a respite on these stressful trips. Instead, this stay vastly intensified the stress of my day.
Large rooms with a large television in each room. Friendly staff.
Room smelled and the reeked of sweat. Desperately needs cleaning.
Everything always neat and clean ❤️
The complimentary breakfast and location
It is right next to Bodo’s Bagels. They made an effort to improve the public area/halls with new flooring.
Old. Very Dark - public spaces and rooms!. Staff not engaged, sour. Bathtub didn’t drain properly. Phone didn’t work. Only 2 towels and no sofa bed bedding; since the phone didn’t work, had to walk down to request items and carry back myself. Same thoroughly disinterested, unsmiling, slow-moving reception staff. They made an effort to improve the public area/halls with new flooring, but can still see that doors are old and damaged, etc. The bathroom door in our room was all torn up along the bottom like it had been eaten away by termites or “critters.” Room noisy! You can hear door handles turning, doors opening and closing, guests AND housekeeping talking and moving about, even from down the hall.
Clean and nice place
The bed was hard
Our 1-bedroom suite was spacious and well-furnished with everything we needed.
Beautiful well maintained hotel with lovely lobby. Rooms spacious and quiet. Great breakfast provided free each day with something for everyone. Convenient location to the University of Virginia as well as shopping and restaurants. Great bagel restaurant next door that can be walked to in less than 5 minutes.
Nothing.
Very convenient for traveling, and right by food, grocery stores and also nature. I really liked that there was a short trail behind the property along a river. Was nice to be close for a short commute but still able to walk around and appreciate nature. The staff was very helpful and where I stayed, the Muse building I believe, had a beautiful courtyard and was very peaceful.
In the kitchenette area, it would be helpful to have a sponge and paper towels. That way you’re able to clean dishes without running the dishwasher or using a dish towel. Also switching the coffeemaker in the rooms would be helpful. It’s an old school one and not very good. The coffee the hotel offers, however, is great
Very over priced for grad weekend.
Ideal location for touring the area. We were sightseeing and visiting a few wineries in the area.
Nothing! We would return to the Inn again without second thought!
