New Year’s Eve Ball at Hotel William Gray was my first experience and definitely my last.
Because of the announced Old Port road closures, I contacted the hotel days in advance to ask how guests attending the event (without a room reservation) should plan their arrival, parking, and timing. I live only 20 minutes away, so a room was not essential, but proper planning was. I was initially told there would be no issue arriving at 7 PM. After I forwarded official city notices recommending arrival before 5 PM, the hotel replied that valet parking was an option on a first come, first served basis, or nearby street parking.
Based on this information, I arrived early at 4:45 PM, expecting to park at valet. At arrival, the valet attendant informed me that valet parking was only for hotel guests with rooms, despite this never being mentioned in any email. When I questioned this contradiction, Eleni Albanis was called. Her attitude was dismissive and disrespectful. Instead of addressing the misinformation, she simply said I could not park there and offered to refund my event ticket—15 minutes before the roads were about to close, while I was already dressed for a formal event. This is completely unprofessional for a hotel of this level.
Had this restriction been clearly communicated in advance, I would have planned my outfit, footwear, and transportation differently with my friend.
Thankfully, we had brought spare shoes and managed to find street parking nearby, though not in an ideal or clearly permitted spot, as most other options were far away.
The confusion continued inside the hotel. We asked reception where we could change shoes and leave out coats and was incorrectly sent to the 3rd floor, only to later discover we needed to be on the 2nd floor. At that point, my confidence in the hotel’s organization dropped to zero.
We were told the cocktail reception would be on the 2nd floor before moving to the 3rd floor for the main event. When we finally tried to enjoy a cocktail, we were told we needed bracelets—something no one had mentioned before—and were sent back to the 3rd floor to get it. By then, frustration had completely replaced any excitement for New Year’s Eve.
The service during dinner was acceptable, but the main course meat was extremely dry. Overall, the evening was overshadowed by poor communication, lack of coordination, and especially the unprofessional behavior of front-facing staff.
If Hotel William Gray cannot accommodate or clearly manage parking and logistics for non-hotel guests, then this event should not be publicly advertised. It would make far more sense to limit it to hotel guests only.
This was, without question, the worst hotel-related experience I have ever had.
The hotel is right in the beautiful old town near to the River and surrounded by beautiful buildings. Very comfortable rooms.
Very easy walking and not too far from the metro
Lovely hotel, the concierge team and restaurant staff were really helpful and what we really liked was they also had personalities and were great fun.
The spa was also excellent.
Great location and room. Helpful staff. Kenny was wonderful and funny.
It was busy but Breakfast was particularly slow and painful.
This hotel and service exceed my expectations. I planned a surprise birthday trip for my fiancee. The hotel not only provided us an early check in, but also upgraded our room and brought us cake and a heartfelt card. We felt so taken care of! Despite being in a wonderful location, we didn't want to leave the hotel. The view from our room was spectacular, and there was so much to explore with the hotel. We will definitely be back!
Having a great stroll on Montreal on the Christmas day, my family and I urgently needed some assistance for printing and scanning purposes. We ran into William Gray hotel, and despite the fact that we do not reside here, Francesca at reception kindly and supportively helped us. Thank you so much!!!
What a wonderful Christmas experience!
The staff were amazing.
The hotel is beautiful - a gorgeous mix of old and new. It sits in the center of old town and half a block from the best street in the city. So French!
Our room was lovely! Beautiful views of French architecture, spires, (with topiary pots and twinkle lights everywhere) all seen from floor to ceiling windows in our lovely room overlooking the river and key sights. Marble bathrooms, very clean! Beds so cozy and comfortable.
Everything was “William Gray” branded beautifully - a sign of pride of ownership.
Because of Christmas occassion, we found a stocking on our door, filled with goodies and even Le Labo bath products!
Merry Christmas!
The restaurant Maggie Oakes, is like a stunning Parisian supper club with banquet-style seating in lush, deep olive velvet, with beautiful table lighting, and a fabulous solid marble bar.
My husband and I decided to spend a quiet Christmas together, so we’re looking forward to our prix fixe Christmas dinner this evening. We know it won’t disappoint.
While enjoying this respite in winter white,
one can tell the summer here is not to be missed. And the Hotel William Gray is the spot. The open rooftop restaurant/lounge with incredible views would be a true highlight during warmer months.
We’ll be back. Viva la William Gray!
Our company hosts an annual, well‑attended event at Hotel William Gray, and it is always a pleasure to work with their team. The staff, from the early planning stages through to execution, are consistently professional, attentive, and accommodating. This includes the Audio/Visual team, who are equally reliable and easy to work with. I would highly recommend this hotel for any event.
We had the best experience with Wael and Tom from this hotel. It was our first time in Montreal, and we used the hotel for valet parking. They helped us with all of our luggage to the Airbnb around the corner. This went above and beyond parking our car! While there, I fell and broke my pelvis. Upon leaving, we were given a wheelchair to use, and the guys there again helped with our luggage from the Airbnb. There were police next to our car who allowed us to park on the pedestrian street, and offered so much compassion and help. I can't say enough about the people in Montreal, and the staff at Hotel William Gray!! We will most likely stay there on our next trip to Montreal!
Charming hotel with modern rooms. I got the bigger room for my daughter and I. One of the most comfortable beds and she was comfy on pull out sofa. LOVED the turndown service. Great location too. Friendly and excellent service.
Tom is literally the best… he was so kind and was definitely a highlight of our stay at the Hotel. He knew which car was ours before we even got there!
This is a beautiful hotel, right in the heart of old Montreal. The rooms are amazing, build into ancient walls, comfortable, pretty perfect.
However.
Their staff need to go back to service school. Yes, cleaning staff were snappy, I saw a doorman literally scream obscenities at a delivery guy who had trouble backing out of their underground (really bad words). But the coup de gras was being confronted by a "gatekeeper" who told me I couldn't sit in the second floor quiet area, after being asked to move there to make space for a private event. As I walked up the stairs, he confronted me at top with a firm "you can't be here", forced me to show him my ID.
I paid $500 per night x(3) to be there. I'd expect the hotel to show some class.
Amazing staff and location. Kenny particularly made our stay extra special from the booking of the room that was picked based on our personal preferences to all of the staff accommodating our requests with kindness and professionalism.
We returned to The William Gray Hotel for our company Christmas Party again this year & were so pleased that we did-Food was excellent-service was excellent -venue is charming but the notable thing about this hotel is that the service is wonderful from the front door on-people are polite and happy to accommodate-it has a very nice vibe-very welcoming & for good measure, this hotel smells really good ! :)
We had an excellent stay at the William Gray, but what truly stood out was the valet team, especially Paulo and Eric. Both went above and beyond every single day. They were fast, professional, and consistently thoughtful in a way you don’t often see anymore. They anticipated what we needed before we even asked, made every arrival and departure seamless, and treated us with genuine care.
Their service set the tone for the entire stay and is a major reason we’d return. The hotel is beautiful, but Paulo and Eric made it exceptional.
Highly recommend.
We had our wedding at The William Gray and our event, as well as our stay, was absolutely amazing. We loved that the hotel was a mix of old and new architecture and the common spaces are gorgeous.
Our out-of-town guests had a great experience from the moment they checked-in and throughout the event. The staff at The William Gray really takes care of you and helps you with anything you may need or questions you may have.
The food and service was absolutely amazing, especially during our wedding reception where we've received non-stop compliments from our guests.
The room that was provided to us was modern, very clean and had an amazing view of the Old Port. We had no trouble sleeping and were provided with many complimentary gifts throughout the day.
We would definitely stay there again!
We recently celebrated our wedding at Hotel William Gray, and it was truly magical from start to finish. The team went above and beyond to make sure every detail was perfect—from the planning stages to the big day itself.
The venue is stunning, with a mix of elegance and charm that created the ideal backdrop for our celebration. The staff were professional, attentive, and genuinely caring, making us feel supported throughout the entire process. Our guests were equally impressed and still talk about how beautiful and seamless everything was.
And we cannot forget to mention the food—it was absolutely amazing! Every dish was delicious, beautifully presented, and added so much to the overall experience.
We are so grateful to Aline Couadier and the entire Hotel William Gray team for helping us create memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate your love, we couldn’t recommend this venue more highly.
My stay at Hotel William Gray was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The service was truly 5-star, and the location in the heart of Old Port Montreal just steps from incredible restaurants was perfect. The staff made us feel genuinely special, and it was hard to even leave the hotel. Highly recommend!
The hotel stay was faultless. Customer service was friendly and professional.
Our room was modern, spotless and bright, all looks so new and is a pleasure to spend time here.
Stayed with my sister and brother in law to celebrate, so happy we stayed here, the food in the restaurant was really good and breakfast was freshly made and plentiful.
The views from the roof are spectacular, loved the experience.
This is a great hotel in downtown Montreal. This is the first time I stayed in this part of Montreal and I loved it. Lots of restaurants on your doorstep and relatively little car traffic with most people walking. Everything was efficient and of high quality. I loved cafe Olimpico which is attached to the hotel.
First off, Kenny was amazing. Thank you for making our trip special. Besides that, the hotel was great and the bar was nice. We paid for the room with a terrace. The room was nice, but the terrace was underwhelming. We thought there would be chairs. It seems just to be a smoking spot, or else I’m not sure what it’s for. There was no view. Overall, great hotel and would stay here again. The room was always clean. There was music we could hear from our room in the mornings but it was relatively quiet. The location in old town was great we enjoyed walking around and had a nice atmosphere.
