Having a Car is mandatory
Pros:

Was hoping to get a good hotel but we got a bit of trouble. Someone was waiting for us when we got there but the room was not what we expected.
There was a horrible smell coming from the bathroom, it seemed like it was a problem in all the rooms (something to do with the pipes). Not that much water coming from the shower, don't expect warm water...
Breakfast was included but as it was a Sunday the manager said they won't prepare it and gave us a sandwich.
Wouldn't recommend this hotel at all.

Burgled our first night BEWARE
Pros:

Friendly staff, large suite, good AC tasty breakfasts and plenty of hot water but the bed was hard and they have TERRIBLE security. Our room was broken into through a window with a skimpy lock as we slept. Money and belongings amounting to $1500 USD were taken. We were moved to a second floor room and discovered that the external door could be easily popped open, WHILE LOCKED, with one hand. Another room was broken into the same night. They have locked gates but easy access to the ground floor rooms due to a low wall and broken chain link fence. They do not have a security guard or surveillance or any other overnight staff. The water pump on the roof is also quite noisy. Lastly, we stayed 7 nights and had a maid visit to clean and provide fresh linen twice.

Pros:

This is a hotel for total relaxation and privacy. The rooms are excellent and pristinely clean. I felt comfortable enough to walk around barefoot. The staff is first class especially the young lady who runs it! Its located almost in the middle of the jungle though, so there was never an internet signal, nor any tv's in the room. The location is not good, so you better have a car and bring your supplies before you arrive, because its not the easiest place to find. Stay here if you want quietness, privacy and a slow pace. If you like a little bit of a faster place you better find another hotel, because as a whole there is not much to do in Akumal.
