I stayed at the Rutland Hotel while my partner was in hospital in June 2026, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better place to stay during such a difficult time.
The location is perfect – just a few minutes' walk from the hospital, which meant I felt safe walking back and forth on my own, even late at night.
However what really made my stay was the staff. Every member of the team was kind, caring and genuinely interested in how my partner was doing. They regularly checked in on me and made what was a very stressful time feel a little easier. When complications during my partner's surgery meant I needed to extend my stay, they sorted everything out quickly and took away one less thing for me to worry about.
A special thank you to Alison, who was absolutely wonderful. Her kindness and support made a real difference, and I'll always be grateful for how she looked after me.
I also ate in the hotel on several evenings, and the food was very good, with generous portion sizes and great value.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Rutland Hotel, especially to anyone needing accommodation while a loved one is at the nearby hospital. Thank you all for your kindness and compassion.
The location was great with lots of facilities within walking distance.
The hotel is in need of a little tlc.
A comfortable stay in a good location close to the botanical gardens
The staff were lovely and the rooms were clean, quiet and very comfortable. For me, that makes a great stay.
I would have liked a bathroom shaving outlet and an outlet by the bed. Additionally, having an outlet near the window would have allowed us to put the fan near the window instead of across the room where it was the least beneficial.
Nice bathroom
Terrible room - very small - tiny window that had opaque film on the glass so could not see out - felt like a prison cell. Someone had scratched off part of the film do there was a gap to see outside but it looked scruffy. Very old carpet and generally looking like it needed a refit. Bathroom sink a bit blocked. Room 55.
Convenient to hospital for appointment
Lots of stairs to get to room.
Sensitive to the wishes of dog owners and having a genuine care. Breakfast was very well put together and no grease to found, just a proper full English without the fat. The pastries were also very tasty if on a continental option.
I paid extra through booking.com for a bigger room but ended up in a small room. I raised it with the staff who were happy to move me to another larger space, but as I had already unpacked and in a huge hurry to get to a graduation ceremony, I let it pass. The problem was with booking.com rather than the hotel as their records did not show that I had paid extra.
The Location - it was close to the University which was our main objective.
1 - Check-in - Staff uninterested and preoccupied with their phones
2 - We requested an early breakfast package,, that we arranged when we checked in, to be picked up from reception, the next morning as my eldest daughter had to leave at 0730. This wasn't available as agreed. So my youngest Daughter had to search around the hotel for someone to help her make up the breakfast bag.
3 - Although our rooms were close together, in the same corridor - Room 57 was a disgrace. The bed took up 90% of the available floor space, our wardrobe was a couple of hooks with some hangers, the bathroom was so small I was unable to use it I'm 6ft and 15st - Not a massive man (luckily my Daughters had a room along the corridor), and the curtain wouldn't close properly so the street light shone in from the yard we overlooked, combined with the location next to the stair well and a service door, I'd say my wife and I managed 2 hours sleep.
4 - Breakfast was another disaster, although we arrived in plenty of time we were told that given we had to leave in 30mins to make our appointment, there would not be enough time to cook us a breakfast (there were only 6 guests including our 3 in the breakfast room) but we could have some bacon to make a sandwich, this took an age to produce and was burnt beyond recognition when it eventually arrived)
The hotel was clean and easily located with parking although this seemed to get busy quickly. The staff were helpful and accommodating. The room was modern and had what you’d expect.
We were unfortunate to stay there when the temperatures were high so the rooms were hot. Our room did not have a fan although I probably could have asked for one. Persons with restricted mobility may struggle as there are stairs and no lift. Although they arranged our breakfast in a function room near reception which was ideal as a member of our group could not go down the stairs to the breakfast room.
Convenient location to university and city. Character building and gardens.
Location
Everything else was very very poor. I would not recoomend anyone to stay there.
Excellent location for visiting university. Welcome.
A bit run down. Old fashioned room facilities. Old wooden windows needing maintenance (sashes broken). Layout and bit of a maze.
Stayed while my mum was having treatment at the hospital - hotel is perfect location for hospital stay which is a two minute walk down the road. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Hotel is dog friendly and has a lovely little enclosed garden. Food also very good. Special thanks to Alison who helped to look after my dog so I could be with my mum at the hospital, you are amazing :)
Staff very friendly and helpful
The staff were very helpful and friendly at reception. A good bathroom, big shower, decent bed.
The front of the building is a little tired, the interior less so. We were above the entrance, first floor. Windows open at night as it was so hot and there was quite a lot of gathering and chatting outside from the early hours.
Lovely helpful staff, comfortable rooms in an excellent location.
A little hot with no air conditioning, but the fan was useful. Small car park. We were lucky to get a space.
