We stayed at The Wrightington Hotel for three nights, this is our second visit.
We used the Spa and had breakfast and dinner.
I can recommend this hotel for the comfort, great food, attentive friendly sta. and value.
We visited RHS Bridgwater which is within a reasonable drive for a day out.
Great location off the M6, the rooms are of good size and well presented. Good lesuire facilities. Staff were friendly.
The guest who was above us kept walking around and sounded like Bigfoot! Not the hotel’s fault
Your receptionist where a credit to your business
Sauna not working during stay
Would have liked a fridge in the room
Whilst The Wrightington is the best hotel we have stayed at in Wigan - admittedly not against stiff competition - it has issues. I’d sum them up as the unmistakeable sound of corners being cut. It isn’t run as you would expect a good hotel to be run, although it advertises itself as a good hotel.
For example, the room was spacious and nicely-decorated by somebody who knows what he or she is doing. But…
The room smelled of stale cigarette smoke. The smoking ban came in in 2008, I think, so I can’t understand why this would be the case in 2026.
In the bathroom, which was very clean, the tank behind the loo dripped continuously, which was distracting.
Similarly, the plug in the sink didn’t work properly so it was impossible to fill the sink to wash my face: the water kept draining away.
The shower tray filled up with water quickly because somebody needs to put a dose of Mr Muscle down the drain to clear the pipes but clearly nobody could be bothered.
The toiletries were nice but whenever I see those pump dispensers chained to the wall I know with a sense of inevitability that one of the pumps won’t be working properly and that I’ll need to do arm contortions in the shower to extract enough shower gel for one leg. Yes, that happened.
The walls were thin so at 11.45 pm we had to listen to the drunk people in the room next door partying. They later moved to the room above us for some (we assume) clog dancing on the thin ceiling.
The check in/check out process was deeply odd. I booked online via the hotel’s own website. No request for payment. A couple of days later I received an e-mail telling me off for not having paid yet despite the fact that the stay at the hotel was still two days away. What sort of hotel does that? I called reception and spoke to someone who didn’t seem to understand what I was saying but who nevertheless told me that I could pay on arrival, as if this were a huge concession. If the hotel wants guests to pay in advance, why not make it part of the booking process on the website? I assume that it is because the owners are too cheap to pay for a proper payment interface on the website and don’t care what impression that leaves on guests.
When we checked out (at the unusually early check out time of 10.30 am (we made sure to leave by that time as by then we had formed the view that this was the sort of hotel that would enthusiastically enforce a fine for checking out two minutes late) we weren’t asked how our stay had been. I surmise that the hotel doesn’t care!
Overall it felt that The Wrightington was charging an ambitious (for Wigan) £124 room only without breakfast for rather a cheapskate offering.
We have just stayed overnight and had a throughly enjoyable experience.
From checking in things went well, Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated and had everything for a pleasant overnight stay, The Evening Meal in the restaurant and bar was excellent and cooked to perfection. Breakfast was also enjoyable with plenty of choice for everyone. All the staff were Friendly, Helpful and Professional. I'm sure we will be returning in the future.
Nearby and convenient to the motorway
Friendly staff
Pool out of commission
Jacuzzi very chemical smelling and not ususable
Restaurant very expensive and almost non existent vegetarian options
We’ve stayed here many times over the years & can always guarantee a warm welcome. The rooms are always immaculately presented with the latest addition of wonderful vegan toiletries being a really thoughtful touch. The food is always of superb quality, well cooked & delicious. A special thank you goes to Martin for his personal touch & for developing a really tasty vegan menu. Looking forward to our next visit already 😊

Good location
The ceiling must contain the thinnest, noisiest, squeakiest floorboards in history. I could hear every step of the people above squeaking away and then when they finally fell asleep I could hear them snoring all night.
It’s a shame as the hotel is nice, staff were great, breakfast tasty and room very spacious.
If I’d been in the room above the stay would have been much different!
Very nice ,staff were great food was amazing
I understand it’s was a national holiday but we couldn’t use the pool or gym as we planned due to later check in and early check out plus we was asked to leave the gym at 17:40 but said it was open till 20:00
Excellent meal as usual 16 of us went and everything was excellent, lovely staff & service will definitely be returning soon.
The shared spaces were nice and clean, the pool area was lovely too
Location is great from the motorway and where we needed to be.
The mattress felt like I was sleeping on the odd spring and the base of the bed. The latch was missing off the window so it couldn’t be shut properly to keep the noise out.
We wanted a hot drink mid morning from the bar and the staff didn’t seem too thrilled that we had even asked.
Sunday dinner advertised on the website from 1pm is incorrect, reception told us it was 3pm. Initial check in staff member was not the most cheery or welcoming person.
My friend and I booked for a day at the spa. The price was reasonable as a one hour massage was £80 and the total price of this spa including a £10 weekly supplement was £110. Upon arrival we were greeted at reception and we were able to sit in a waiting area to fill out our health forms and choose our lunch. She then showed us around the spa, where the things were such as the pool and the changing rooms as well as the relaxation room. we were able to move around the spa freely in our robe and slippers, she did recommend not wearing the slippers around the pool area as it was quite slippy with those slippers on and luckily we had both bought flip-flops. We spent the morning in the spa area using the pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room they were all well cleaned. The spa pool however was a bit of an odd colour and was very foamy but it was not too chlorinated which other places have been. The relaxation room was delightful it was nice and quiet. The lighting was perfect. Music was lovely however the room could’ve been a little bit warmer. There was water available in this room. The changing and shower room was particularly nice. There were plenty of towels provided the lockers were spacious and easy to use. We have to redress after the spa prior to going to lunch. My friend already knew this and the lady on reception did inform us of this. We went upstairs to the bar to use our dinner allowance considering we booked our lunch at 1 pm, they were quite slow to bring out our food however when the food did arrive, it was absolutely delicious. We returned back to the spa area for our treatments the ladies providing the treatments were very good. the music however was a little interesting to say the least they perhaps need to find a more relaxing playlist. We return to the bar later on for a cup of tea and some light refreshments before returning home.
