Rooms
Staff lacks hospitality skills, I was not helped with the luggage when I arrived. I had to call to ask for sleepers, when I asked about a reservation I was referred to “use open table”.
Pendry San Diego is part of the Chase Sapphire Reserve luxury hotel program, and although it certainly comes with a luxury price, the experience does not match it at all. The price for my two night stay was an eye watering $944. I decided to book anyway because of the generous credits chase offers, which made the price much more reasonable.
First the positives, the location is great, and the hotel staff were mostly pleasant. The pool area was lovely and some of the amenities in the room were a nice touch.
In addition to the credits on the stay cost, with the edit program I was also given a $100 credit for food and beverage, plus complimentary breakfast both mornings of my stay. Unfortunately, the food program at this property is far from luxurious.
Our first night we decided to try the in hotel sports bar, which had loud music blaring and a small collection of arcade games. The service we received was inattentive and the food, despite being around $25 for a main course, tasted like it came from a Bennigans. We quickly used up our $100 credit on two drinks, and a few main courses.
The final morning we tried to have breakfast in provisional kitchen, and were told it would be a ten minute wait for a table. After 30 minutes we gave up, and tried to get our included breakfast via room service. Using the room phone the room service staff never answered. Finally I was able to reach the front desk who relayed my order to the f/b staff. I shared my frustration with the staff, who transferred me to someone else.
I repeated my story to the second person, who told me the f/b manager would contact me to follow up. Having to repeat the same story twice was annoying, and after I hung up the phone I had serious doubts about my complaints being taken seriously. My doubts were well placed, I never heard from anyone, and the only compensation I received was that my breakfast order would be comped at check out. This wasn't really much service recovery though, since my breakfast was already covered by the chase credit.
Overall, what we received was far from a luxurious experience and I hope chase reconsiders their partnership with this hotel.
Location is fine and clean enough. However, I was traveling with 2 young children and tried to check in at 5pm for the 2 queen bed room that I booked but was told that room is not ready/available. Was instead given a king bed - Elle, the person at the front desk was very matter of fact about this - no apology no acknowledgment of the whole situation.
Great location - mostly exceptional aspects of our sta. But no way this is a five star place (yet). Most staff are amazing and again, exactly where you want to be if you are going to be downtown. But rooms are tiny. And sort of a nickel-dime show. No room in refrigerator because it’s stocked with stuff they try to sell you. No ice available on your floor - have to call room service - be prepared to wait 15 minutes. Honestly, Margaritaville is a better room and 1 block away
Location only
I travel a lot. This hotel really puzzled me why charges as 5 star. Room smelled unpleasantly. Hideous design of the rooms. We couldn't stop laughing why shower room has clear glass almost in the middle of the room in front of the bed. Don't believe me? Have a visit. It's hilarious. There are better hotels in 5 min walk from there. Ah also odd that you have to pay to go in sauna. Pool area is bellow average. There are a lot of weird and overpriced things in the hotel. Thanks God there is The Hotel Coronado I booked as an insurance so we left there.
When I find a place like the Pendry it becomes the gold standard for my stays. Whenever in San Diego for work it becomes my go to spot if I'm lucky enough to get in.
Outstanding stay at the Pendry! Front desk staff & concierge were great with recommendations. Excellent location in the Gaslamp district.
Cadillac ride & drive perk is really great! So convenient, no rental car needed.
My stay at the Pendry San Diego was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I arrived, the service was warm, attentive, and truly elevated every part of the experience. The hotel is beautifully designed with a perfect blend of modern luxury and coastal California style, making it feel both sophisticated and inviting.
The location in the Gaslamp Quarter is unbeatable, everything from restaurants to nightlife is just steps away, yet the rooms are peaceful and incredibly comfortable. The bed was one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in, and the attention to detail in the room, from the décor to the amenities, was outstanding.
What truly sets the Pendry apart is the overall experience, it feels like more than just a hotel, but a destination in itself. Whether you’re visiting for a getaway, business trip, or special occasion, this place delivers on every level. I can’t wait to return!
Gezellig hotel op een perfect locatie.
I have stayed at several five-star hotels, and I can confidently say this was my worst experience. Proper room cleaning is a fundamental requirement for any five-star property, yet it did not meet that basic standard. At times, it felt more like staying at a roadside motel than a luxury hotel.
Several issues occurred throughout my stay:
A cup in the room was visibly dirty at first glance. I brought it to reception out of concern that someone might unknowingly use it.
After requesting proper cleaning, the next day a mop was left hanging on the bathroom towel rack.
I brought the mop to reception myself. No apology or explanation was given—only that they would inform housekeeping.
The bedding contained small particles, which caused itching during the night.
The room was very noisy until around 2 a.m. (understandable given the downtown location, but still disruptive).
Most disappointing was the reception team. I interacted with multiple staff members, but none showed attentiveness or took ownership of the issues. It felt as though handling guest concerns was not their responsibility.
At a five-star hotel, both service and attention to detail should exceed basic expectations. Unfortunately, this stay fell far below that standard.
This is a luxurious hotel in a fantastic location! The staff was friendly and made everything easy. The library themed nooks on the second floor are gorgeous. The fitness center had everything. The pool looked amazing and we hated that we were so busy at a conference that we didn't get to spend more time there and at the spa. For a tiny bit more than some of the nearby hotels we got a truly luxurious stay.
Comfortable a clean rooms. Restaurants and lounge were very good, food and service.
Concierge and front desk service was lacking, asked about having a hair blowout somewhere, gave one suggestion, and said if we wanted any help from them it had to be within the n xt 20 minutes as they were leaving for day (4:30p) and it would have been extremely helpful for the front desk knowing we were checking out Sunday to have informed us of the city marathon that day, to be prepared for delays in transportation.
Every staff member was very kind, went above and beyond whether it was with a greeting, opening doors, or anticipating our needs. The hotel pool was lovely, the bar at night was always a good time with great drinks. The room was spectacular. Would definitely stay here again!
Overall a nice hotel, but three days after we left we were hit with honor bar charges that were not ours. It seems as if the hotel uses this tactic to raise a little additional money from their customers once they have left. Infuriating!
Location, comfortable and clean.
The compulsory extra added charge for " facility" whether you use them or not I e pool, sauna, gym and at $45 per day it's a con.
