Before booking a hotel in Takayama, I would first suggest thinking carefully about whether you actually want to visit the city itself. Takayama appears in countless European and American travel guides, but our impression was that there was surprisingly little to do there. Much of the central area felt artificial, almost as if it had been created primarily for tourists rather than being a living city in its own right.
As for the hotel, it is officially rated four stars, but the actual experience was nowhere near what I would expect from a hotel of this category.
The room did not even have a proper refrigerator. There was no freezer compartment, which can be useful if you want to cool sake or other drinks properly, and there was not even complimentary water inside. More importantly, the refrigerator itself barely worked. The furniture was visibly worn, and the hotel in general felt old and tired.
The hotel seems particularly proud of its hot spring source. On the ninth floor, there is even a geological section explaining the borehole and the underground structure. Unfortunately, this impressive presentation makes the actual condition of the onsen even more disappointing. The bathing area looked old and poorly maintained, with visible rust stains and other signs of wear. More seriously, it simply did not feel clean. There were numerous clearly visible particles floating in the water.
Another surprisingly frustrating detail concerned something as simple as a knife. We had bought excellent pears in Matsumoto and wanted to eat them at the hotel. We asked for a small ordinary knife and were told that the hotel could not provide one. For a four-star hotel, this was difficult to understand.
The attitude at reception also felt rather cold and inflexible. The following morning, we bought fruit at the market and wanted somewhere to sit and eat it. We fully understood that bringing outside food into the hotel's cafe might not be allowed, so we simply asked whether there was any other place in the hotel where we could eat it. We were told there was nowhere.
I understand and generally respect how seriously rules are followed in Japan, but here that rigidity repeatedly worked against basic hospitality.
The same thing happened at check-in. I arrived at around 2 p.m., knowing perfectly well that official check-in started at 3 p.m. My initial intention was simply to leave our luggage.
